Newtownabbey: Cherry blossoms celebrated by NI Japanese community
Once a year a housing estate in County Antrim becomes a special place for the Japanese community in Northern Ireland as rows of cherry blossom trees burst into life. The candy floss coloured trees are enjoyed by Merville Garden Village residents and visitors every spring with the streets almost painted in beautiful pinks. But the blossoms are especially celebrated by members of the Japan Society of Northern Ireland as part of a traditional Japanese 'Hanami' (flower viewing) festival. Instead of the usual festival run by Merville House and the residents society, this year members from Japan Society NI's dance group celebrated in their own special way.
Yukari Norris and Yoriko Marshall were wearing special pink, yellow and white patterned kimonos - the traditional Japanese summer dress for women - during their visit to see the trees. And it's all to honour the coming of their special 'sakura' - or cherry blossom - a central theme of life in their home country. In Japan, these beautiful trees represent the transience of life - here today and gone tomorrow. Cherry blossoms are also considered the national flower of Japan.Yukari and Yoriko celebrate their memories of Japan by visiting the cherry blossom trees at Merville Garden Village every year, to reflect, eat and even dance.
"The cherry blossom is very important to Japanese people because it is a symbol of beauty or life being short - so you have to enjoy it," Yukari told BBC News NI."Every time there is a special occasion at home or we mark an entrance at school, we go to the cherry blossom for a photo under the tree. It takes you back to memories you have. "It reminds me of a lesson - life doesn't last forever so you have to enjoy the moment, like the trees." Since moving to Northern Ireland 24 years ago from Kyoto, Yukari meets friends from the Japan Society NI under the cherry blossom trees to have a party, picnic and to perform a traditional Japanese folk dance. "I started a dance group 15 years ago," she said. "I have been dancing since I was five and I wanted a way we could perform and celebrate together."
Yukari's dance group is called the 'Hannari' club which means 'elegance' in her home place. Yoriko moved to Northern Ireland 17 years ago from Fukushima after meeting her husband who is from Northern Ireland."The cherry blossoms remind us of home," said Yoriko. "It makes me homesick."She even named her daughter Sakura to symbolise how much she loves the cherry trees and her home country. "We make our own cherry blossom viewing party because that's what we miss at home," she said."We dance anywhere, we just need music that's it."
'Instagrammable place'
Merville resident Linda Dennis say they get plenty of "Asian visitors coming to see the trees"."Japanese people pose and hug the trees and we find it funny seeing it but we love it… if we see visitors coming to take a selfie we'll stop and help them and take a photo for them," she said.Rory and his dog George have lived in Merville for four years, and he described it as a "very instagrammable place".Louisa Morrison seems to know everyone who walks past (and their dogs). She says living in Merville Gardens brings a "feel good factor"."On a day like today, the blue sky and the brightness of the pink," she adds. "It just warms your heart up. It just makes you feel good."We are just so lucky to live here."
Merville Garden Village is a conservation area with strict rules and regulations. Flags, emblems and painting of curbs is forbidden and the houses are all painted the same shade of white.Jane and Billy Stranney started off their married life living in Merville 47 years ago. After 20 years away, they moved back to retire here ten years ago.She says Merville is a "special place"."These transient and beautiful trees are something to look forward to at this time of year," she added.Jane reckons the cherry blossoms are at least 60 to 70 years old, possibly planted before Merville Gardens Village was built in 1949."There has been a cherry blossom festival here the last few years but not this year because of lack of volunteers and funding. It just got too big."
When is the best time to see the trees?
Northern Ireland's sakura or 'pink confetti' usually bloom between March and early June. The flowers only bloom for a relatively short time.
Who planted the trees?
Claire Crawford from Merville House, the Georgian 18th Century manor house that sits within the grounds of Merville Garden Village, said the Ulster Garden Villages are to thank for planting the trees. She said that rumour has it, the trees were supposed to be planted between Merville Gardens and the Abbey Georgian house in Whiteabbey but Merville House managed to get the lot.

Bianca Censori's sister joins Kanye's crew after denying she's dating his pal
Bianca Censori's younger sister, Angelina, has been spending time with her sibling and Kanye West in Japan after holidaying with the couple in Spain where Bianca caused quite a stir Bianca Censori's sister, Angelina, is officially part of Kanye West's crew after joining the rapper as he jet-sets around the world. Bianca, 30, has sent shockwaves through the showbiz industry since hooking up with Kanye, 48, sporting her barely-there outfits - and now Angelina has been thrust into the spotlight too. After hanging out with Kanye and his gang in Spain last month, where Bianca dropped jaws flashing her nipples in another eye-popping outfit, 20-year-old Angelina is travelling with the rapper's entourage in Japan. The Aussie model took to Instagram on Wednesday to share a series of photos of their latest trip, including images from popular chain restaurant WAGYUMAFIA and snaps of the Japanese skyline. Kanye West bizarrely 'changes name again' four years after complete rebrand Meanwhile, a photo of Kanye posing in designer vintage store Amore in Japan also emerged online. The Jesus Walks star sported a plain black hooded jumper with the hood pulled over his head for the shopping trip as he posed without cracking a smile. A second image also emerged showing graffiti scrawled on a wall that read: 'Ye is GOD,' while a third showed the name of Kanye and ex-wife Kim Kardashian's eldest child North West. During her trip with the controversial rapper, Angelina rubbished rumours she was dating Kanye business partner, Sneako. The whispers came after she shared a series of photos from their Mallorca trip, which included Sneako posing for the camera at a luxury waterfront property Kanye was believed to be staying in while Angelina stunned in a silver string bikini. Fans flocked to social media, suggesting Angelina and Sneako were more than just friends. However, the model shut down any romance rumours by writing on X: "We are not dating." It comes after Bianca 'horrified' locals in Spain when she paraded through the quiet streets of Mallorca in her bra and knickers. Witnesses say locals were left horrified by Bianca's outfit choice for their market tour, with one even heard asking if that was her "real nipple" as she bared all in her the sheer bra. "People were horrified. They could be heard asking 'is that her real nipple?' as they walked by. Kanye was standing back a little, letting her browse the market," a witness told Bianca might have been hit by backlash, but women have been allowed to go topless in some areas of Spain since 2020. Under Catalan equality law, women can sunbathe topless in public places without fear of arrest and authorities can be fined a huge £430,000 if they prevent women from being able to go topless. However, while she didn't break any laws, people were left fuming by the Aussie's outfit choice. "Why hasn't this woman been arrested for indecency yet!!!?' one person wrote on X, with another adding: "We have literally seen it all, even when we didn't want to,' another said, while a third wrote: 'So disrespectful to the country and their modest views." Another fumed: "How do they get away with this nudity? If any other non-celeb tried it, they would be arrested."

The two fabulous hotels in Asia that made it to La Liste's World's Best Hotels 2025 list
Your hotel can make or break your vacation. And for some travellers, the hotel is the whole vacation. Whether you're looking for a sanctuary to come back to after a whole day exploring the city or a destination accommodation with all the luxuries you could ask for, there's an answer in Asia. For the extra guarantee of a good time, you can turn to La Liste's latest list of the finest hotels in the world. La Liste, best known for its rankings of gastronomic experiences worldwide, has now ventured into the hospitality sector. Using a proprietary algorithm, it has aggregated and analysed data from over 400 international sources, comprising thousands of reviews, professional evaluations, and guest feedback to produce a list of the World's Best Hotels. A total of 10 hotels across the globe were honoured this year – and just two exceptional properties from Asia have been recognised. One of the Asian laureates is Mandarin Oriental Bangkok. This grand dame opened its doors almost 150 years ago, boasting 331 luxurious rooms and 11 restaurants and bars (including the Michelin-starred French table d'hôte at Le Normandie, reopening in the latter half of 2025). It's situated on picturesque grounds by the Chao Phraya river – we love taking afternoon tea on the terrace to soak in the riverside atmosphere. The Peninsula Shanghai is the only other Asian hotel on the 'World's Best Hotels' list. La Liste highlights it as an "architectural tour de force" – and we can't help but agree. The Peninsula Shanghai does heritage glamour right, nailing even the small details: old-fashioned dials above the lifts, plush patterned carpets, and quality antique reproduction furniture. Facilities abound: think upscale designer boutiques in the hotel arcade, five dining options, a spa and fitness centre, and a spacious sun terrace. We recommend booking the deluxe room for river or garden views. Despite not making it into the final list of top hotels, a couple of standout properties in Asia were recognised with La Liste special awards. Ulaman Eco Luxury Resort in Bali bagged the Style & Design Hotel Award; The Datai Langkawi in Malaysia and Shinta Mani Wild in Cambodia earned the Ethical & Sustainable Hotel Award, while 21 Carpenter in Singapore was awarded the Discovery Gem Hotel Award. Check out all the amazing hotels recognised in La Liste's Best Hotels in 2025 list here.
