Entrepreneur finds alternative to make areca plates safer after US ban
Mangaluru: Entrepreneur and researcher Nivedan Nempe has developed an innovative, eco-friendly alternative following the recent US ban on arecanut leaf sheath dinnerware. His intervention comes at a crucial time, as areca growers and industry experts from Karnataka's areca belt have appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek the lifting of the restriction.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an import alert banning dinnerware made from areca catechu sheaths, citing the presence of naturally occurring toxins that may migrate into food at unsafe levels. The FDA's concerns significantly impacted India's $400-500 million areca plate industry, with nearly 80–85% of exports directed to the US. Most manufacturers are concentrated in Dakshina Kannada and Shivamogga, and the ban threatens the livelihoods of many families.
Nivedan, founder of Areca Tea and operating in Udupi and Shivamogga, acknowledged the FDA's concerns and told TOI: "As a preventive step, the FDA banned imports. But this severely affects Indian manufacturers. The Indian industry made efforts, including writing to the FDA, but the industry is at risk."
In response, Nempe engineered a food-grade, anti-microbial paper lining that acts as a barrier between the food and the areca plate, preventing toxin migration and fungal growth.
"The material is certified, heat-resistant up to 300°C, durable, printable, and gives a premium finish. It meets international safety standards without altering the existing production process," he said.
While the innovation may increase production costs by 10–15%, Nivedan believes that it is the best way forward. "Our lab results were positive on all parameters. It even looks better than bagasse plates. My goal is to safeguard the industry and support the farmers by supplying this new food-grade paper."

Walmart's Flipkart secures approval for direct lending in India
Walmart's Flipkart has secured a lending licence from the Indian central bank and banking regulator, enabling it to offer loans directly to customers and sellers on its platform, according to documents reviewed by Reuters and a source. This is the first time the Reserve Bank of India has granted a large e-commerce player in India a non-bank finance company (NBFC) licence, allowing it to lend but not take deposits. Most e-commerce platforms currently offer loans in tie-ups with banks and NBFCs, but a lending licence will enable Flipkart - India's largest e-commerce firm - to lend directly, a more lucrative model for the group. The central bank issued its certificate of registration - a document that officially recognizes a company as an NBFC - to Flipkart Finance Private Limited on March 13. Reuters has reviewed a copy of both the certificate of registration and the approval letter also dated March 13. The approval has not been previously reported. Flipkart, in which U.S. retail behemoth Walmart holds a more than 80% stake, applied for the licence in 2022, according to the central bank's approval letter. Neither Flipkart nor the Reserve Bank of India immediately responded to Reuters' request for comments. The e-commerce giant may commence its lending operation "in a few months", according to a source aware of the matter who declined to be identified as the talks are private. A final decision on the launch will be subject to the completion of various internal processes such as the appointment of key management personnel and board members and the finalisation of business plans, the source said. Flipkart plans to lend directly to its customers on its popular e-commerce platform and through its fintech app the source said. It may also offer financing to sellers on the platform, they added. At present, the e-commerce giant offers personal loans to customers through tie-ups with lenders such as Axis Bank, IDFC Bank and Credit Saison. Flipkart, last valued at $37 billion in 2024 when it raised $1 billion in a funding round led by Walmart, is shifting its holding company from Singapore to India. Walmart also aims to take the 17-year-old company public. Walmart bought a controlling stake in Flipkart in 2018, which also gave it ownership of PhonePe, a fintech firm also preparing for an IPO. Earlier this year Flipkart's rival Amazon acquired a Bengaluru-based non-bank lender Axio, but the deal is yet to be cleared by the central bank.

India, US push to finalise interim tariff deal as Trump's deadline nears
Indian and U.S. are holding high-level talks this week, aiming to finalise tariff cuts in sectors such as farm and automobiles as part of an interim deal, two government sources said, with an announcement likely later this month. A U.S. delegation led by senior officials from the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) began closed-door, two-day discussions in New Delhi on Thursday with Indian trade officials headed by chief negotiator Rajesh Agrawal, the sources said. "During the current round of talks, negotiators are discussing tariff cuts on specific sectors including agriculture and autos, and proposed benefits for Indian companies," one Indian government source, said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar The deal may be formally announced by month end, before the self-imposed deadline of July 9 by President Trump, but a statement is expected once meetings wrap up, possibly by Sunday, a second official said. Trade Minister Piyush Goyal, currently in Italy, may return to meet the delegation, the official added. Live Events The officials said spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the discussions. Indian trade ministry didn't immediately respond to requests for comments. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in Washington on Monday that trade negotiations were progressing and a deal could be finalised soon. India and the U.S. agreed in February to work on a phased deal, aiming to lift bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. Officials said, India, buoyed by recent trade pact with the UK, and EU talks, is resisting U.S. demands to open its farm and dairy markets, citing potential rural backlash. "We are ready to offer a better deal than the UK pact, with average tariffs down to 10%, matching the U.S. base rate , and near-zero duties with quotas in exchange for market access and supply chain linkages," a third official said. Washington has flagged India's average farm tariff of 39%, with some duties reaching 45-50%. It is also pushing India to allow corn imports for ethanol production. Bilateral trade with the U.S., India's largest trading partner, rose to $129 billion in 2024, with India posting a $45.7 billion surplus.

Hero MotoCorp, Coromandel to Emami: Experts bullish on these stocks on early monsoon arrival
For a country where 60% of the population depends on agricultural income, and where agriculture contributes 18% to India's GDP, the timely arrival and widespread distribution of the monsoon can have a far-reaching impact on the economy. It will also influence the fortunes of sectors that are heavily dependent on rural income. The monsoon, which provides 70% of India's annual rainfall, also has the power to influence central bank decisions and shape the direction of the Indian stock market. In this context, India's 2025 monsoon season has commenced notably early, with the southwest monsoon arriving eight days ahead of the typical onset date of June 1—marking the earliest onset in 16 years, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Following this early arrival, the IMD has forecast above-normal rainfall of at least 108% of the long-period average (LPA) in June 2025. This points to a potentially strong agricultural season—crucial for rural demand—and could benefit sectors such as agrochemicals, fertilizers, tractors, two-wheelers, and FMCG, all of which are closely tied to agricultural performance and rural incomes. Ample monsoon rainfall is also expected to boost hydropower generation and replenish large reservoirs. Moreover, nearly half of India's farmland, which lacks irrigation coverage, relies heavily on the June–September monsoon rains. The above-normal monsoon is also likely to ease inflation further. Inflation has already been on a downward trend over the past three months, hitting a six-year low in April. This could give the Reserve Bank of India more room to adopt a softer stance on interest rates—potentially lifting consumption demand, especially in urban India. Amid expectations of an above-normal monsoon in 2025, brokerage firm Way2Wealth has identified eight stocks that are well-positioned to benefit from a robust rural and agricultural recovery. These monsoon picks span sectors that are directly or indirectly influenced by rainfall trends and rural demand. The brokerage has picked Bayer CropScience from the agrochemicals sector with a target price of ₹ 6,450 apiece, and Coromandel International from the fertilizers and crop protection segment, setting a target price of ₹ 2,700. It has also given a 'buy' rating to Godrej Agrovet, with a target of ₹ 840. In the tractor segment, Swaraj Engines has been chosen by the brokerage, while in the two-wheeler space, it has picked Hero MotoCorp, expecting both to benefit from rural demand tailwinds. The target prices for Swaraj Engines and Hero MotoCorp are set at ₹ 4,600 and ₹ 5,000, respectively. In the FMCG space, the brokerage has preferred Emami, assigning a target price of ₹ 660, as it believes the company could gain from increased rural FMCG spending. Supreme Industries, which may benefit from higher demand for irrigation and rural infrastructure, has been given a target price of ₹ 4,750. Way2Wealth has also included Canara Bank in its list, setting a target of ₹ 125 apiece, citing the potential for increased rural credit demand.
