Armed gang steals 300 litres of diesel from Bergville road project, raising safety concerns
Construction workers in Bergville, in KwaZulu-Natal were held at gunpoint by an armed gang in Bergville while working on a road rehabilitation project.

A violent gang of six armed men, believed to be linked to the construction mafia, stormed a construction site in the the rural area of Bergville in KwaZulu-Natal and stole 300 litres of diesel.
The robbery has prompted strong condemnation from KwaZulu-Natal's Transport and Human Settlements MEC, Siboniso Duma.
According to Duma, the criminals held construction workers at gunpoint before making off with the diesel. The incident happened on a site where a major road rehabilitation project is underway. The P304 road is being rebuilt at a cost of R177 million.
'This road serves as a major link connecting Bergville to Maloti Drakensberg Park/Royal Natal Park through R74,' said Duma in a statement issued on Tuesday.

'The road plays a vital role in terms of stimulating rural economies for communities living under the burden of poverty.'
The P304 route was damaged during the devastating floods that hit parts of KwaZulu-Natal, leaving communities isolated and cut off from hospitals, schools, and socio-economic centres.
Duma said the department's investment aimed to ensure the road remains safe and usable, helping to revitalise key sectors of the economy, including agriculture and tourism.
Describing the robbery as the first incident on this project, Duma confirmed that a case has been opened at the Bergville Police Station
'We are confident that KZN Police Commissioner Lt General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and his team will apprehend the criminals,' he said.
Duma also commended local traditional leaders and the broader community for standing up against the criminals.
'We salute Inkosi Njabulo Miya of the Emazizini Traditional Council, the izinduna, and the entire community for their public display of anger and opposition against these criminals who are trying to derail the project.'
He called on anyone with information about the incident to contact the nearest police station, saying: 'There should be no place for construction mafia gangs in villages, townships, suburbs, or anywhere in KZN.'

The sheds were loaded onto trucks that were driven to the perimeter of the air bases. The roof panels of the sheds were lifted off by a remotely-activated mechanism, allowing the drones to fly out and begin their attack, the official said. The security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said strikes were conducted on Sunday on four air bases, and that 41 Russian warplanes were hit. An SBU statement posted on the Telegram messaging app estimated the damage caused by the assaults at $7 billion. 'Thirty-four percent of strategic cruise missile carriers at the main airfields of the Russian Federation were hit,' the SBU said on Telegram. Unverified video and pictures posted on Russian social media showed Russian strategic bombers on fire at the Belaya air base in the Irkutsk region of Siberia. Igor Kobzev, the regional governor, said there had been a drone attack on a military unit near the village of Sredny, which is near the Belaya base, though he did not specify what the target was. He said the drones had been launched from a truck. The Irkutsk region attack was the first time a drone assault had been mounted by Ukraine so far from the front lines, which are more than 4,300 km (2,670 miles) away. That is beyond the range of the long-range strike drones or ballistic missiles Ukraine has in its arsenal, so required a special scheme to get the drones close enough to their target. Photographs shared with Reuters by the Ukrainian security official showed dozens of short-range quadrocopter drones piled up in an industrial facility. Seven killed after bridge collapse, train derailment in Russia's Bryansk region bordering Ukraine
At least seven people were killed and 69 injured when a highway bridge collapsed onto railway tracks, derailing an approaching train in Russia's Bryansk region that borders Ukraine, Russian authorities said early on Sunday. Russia's Railways had initially said on the Telegram messaging app that the bridge collapse was the result of an 'illegal interference in the operation of transport', but it has since removed the post. Alexander Bogomaz, the governor of the Bryansk region, said on Telegram that 44 people were hospitalised. Three children were among those injured with one in serious condition, he added. Russia's ministry of emergency situations said on Telegram that efforts to find and rescue victims continued throughout the night, and that some 180 personnel were involved in the operation. Among those killed was the locomotive driver, Russia's state news agencies reported, citing medics. Social media pictures and videos showed passengers trying to help others climb out of the train's damaged carriages in the dark and firefighters looking for ways to reach passengers. Russia's Baza Telegram channel, which often publishes information from sources in the security services and law enforcement, reported, without providing evidence, that according to preliminary information, the bridge was blown up. Reuters could not independently verify the Baza report. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine. Truck driver found twenty times over the legal alcohol limit in KZN
He will make his first court appearance in August. The Road Traffic Inspectorate, working with the South African Police Service (Saps), have arrested a truck driver for drinking and driving in Van Reenen along the N3 Freeway. The driver is currently detained in Ladysmith. According to the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, the driver allegedly blew 0.32 mg/1000ml, which is three times more than the legal limit of 0.10 mg/1000 for professional drivers. KZN truck accidents KZN has been battling the scourge of truck accidents in recent months, due to several factors. On 16 May, two trucks collided along the N3 Southbound just after the Peter Brown off-ramp, after one of the trucks allegedly experienced brake failure. 'During my meeting with senior management last Monday, I instructed our RTI team to intensify their 'no-nonsense, zero-tolerance' and Alufakwa campaign on our roads. 'We have been informed that road accidents cost the South African economy over R164 billion annually, an equivalent of 3.4% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).'
