South Korean firm 3C Tae Yang explores setting up electronics unit in Kalaburagi

The Hindu25-04-2025

In a major boost to industrial prospects in the Kalyana Karnataka region, South Korean electronics and semiconductor firm 3C Tae Yang is eyeing Kalaburagi as a site for setting up its first manufacturing unit in India.
The development came to light during a high-level business interaction hosted by the Kalyana Karnataka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KKCCI) late on Thursday.
The session featured founder and CEO of 3C Tae Yang Chang Soon Hwang, who was accompanied by founder of Zemicon Electronics Pvt. Ltd. Amit Mane, originally from Kalaburagi and instrumental in facilitating the visit.
Mr. Hwang expressed a strong interest in setting up an assembly line factory in Kalaburagi in collaboration with Zemicon to cater to multiple sectors such as automobile, medical devices, electronics, IP cameras, AR/VR/MR technologies, defense, aerospace, electric vehicles (EVs) and Research and Development.
Highlighting the high cost of operations in metropolitan cities, Mr. Hwang stated that tier-2 cities like Kalaburagi offer a more viable alternative due to lower costs in land, labour and logistics.
'The factory is anticipated to generate employment for 100-150 individuals, with a focus on recruiting women. If successful, the Kalaburagi unit will mark 3C Tae Yang's first Indian manufacturing venture with plans for further expansion and investment in the region,' Mr. Hwang said in the meeting.
Appealing to the government and KKCCI for support in areas such as land acquisition, tax benefits and special industrial incentives, Mr. Hwang stressed that timely assistance can position Kalaburagi as a vital hub in India's emerging semiconductor ecosystem.
KKCCI president Sharnabasappa M. Pappa, honorary secretary Shivraj Inginshetty, former president Umakant Nigudgi along with office-bearers and members assured full cooperation.
The chamber announced its intention to draft a formal proposal and present it to district in-charge Minister Priyank Kharge, other Ministers concerned and Deputy Commissioner and other relevant authorities to fast-track the process.
The chamber also commended Zemicon Electronics Pvt. Ltd. for its pivotal role in bringing this opportunity to Kalaburagi.
Present at the meeting were KKCCI office-bearers C.A. Uttam Bajaj, Manjunath Jewargi and members, including Doddappa Nisty, Prabhu, Vijay Nimbalkar, Anveer, Shivkumar Kanapur, Kanchana, Mahesh Shinde, Abhijeet Padshetty, Dinesh Patil, Rajshekar Dukandar, Rahul Tengli, Anudeep Dandoti, Namrata Phatate, Aluri Venkat, Ravishankar Jhamdarkhani, Amrut Sangavi and Jagadish Patil.
Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Pappa said that this initiative signalled a promising shift for Kalaburagi toward becoming a regional hub for electronics and semiconductor manufacturing, with significant potential for local employment and economic growth.

The hub of the matter: Airport competitiveness to shape air treaties

The subtext here is that the Indian airline industry is looking to expand international connectivity substantially Listen to This Article The recent disagreement between Emirates President Tim Clark and IndiGo Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Pieter Elbers over bilateral air-service agreements reflects the emerging competitive paradigms between West Asia's state-owned airlines and India's private sector-driven industry. At the annual general meeting of the International Air Transport Association, Mr Clark, who heads West Asia's largest airline, had criticised the Indian government for its 'restrictive' policies towards bilateral seat agreements with foreign airlines. He had sought increasing seat capacity between India and Dubai from the current 65,000 per week to 140,000. The Indian government has contended that it needs to counter the unfair

5 things to know about Anji Khad Bridge: A key link on Delhi-Srinagar rail route

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi flags off the much-awaited Delhi-Srinagar rail service, it will mark a weighty chapter in India's transport history. The Anji Khad Bridge, named after the Anji river itself, will be the centre of attraction along with the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge. The bridges are part of the USBRL rail link between Delhi and Srinagar via the Katra. Among the key highlights of this launch by Narendra Modi will be the inauguration of the Anji Khad Bridge, a one-of-its-kind structure that stands tall in the Reasi district of Jammu and Anji Khad Bridge is the first cable-stayed railway bridge in the country, and a crucial part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which aims to connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India by rail. Alongside the iconic Chenab Bridge, this engineering marvel is expected to redefine connectivity in the region.1. A LANDMARK IN RAILWAY ENGINEERINGStretching over 725 metres and rising 331 metres above the riverbed, the bridge connects Katra and Reasi. Its most striking feature is the 193-metre-high single main pylon that supports 96 cables of varying lengths. This design ensures structural stability in a region known for complex geology and seismic activity.2. MADE FOR THE MOUNTAINS Built to handle tough weather and terrain, the bridge can withstand wind speeds of over 200 km/h. It includes a single railway track, a 3.75-metre-wide service road, and pedestrian paths on both sides. It's a project shaped by the demands of the Himalayan landscape.3. TECHNOLOGY MEETS TERRAINadvertisementThe construction integrated advanced systems such as the DOKA jump-form shuttering and a 40-tonne tower crane imported from Spain. These innovations helped improve safety and reduce construction time by nearly a third.4. INTERNATIONAL GRADE SAFETYWith design standards blending Indian and European codes, the bridge has undergone extensive proof-checking by global consultants, including teams from the UK and Italy. Sensors embedded in the structure will continuously monitor its health throughout its service life.5. NEW LIFELINE FOR KASHMIRThis bridge isn't just infrastructure -- it's a step toward economic inclusion. Once operational, the Delhi-Srinagar train will open up new avenues for tourism, trade, and mobility across Jammu and Anji Khad Bridge stands not only as a technical achievement but also as a symbol of India's growing capability in transforming aspirations into concrete Watch

Rupee falls 26 paise to close at 85.87 against US dollar

At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 85.69 and moved between the high of 85.69 and a low of 86.05 against the greenback during the day. Forex traders said the local unit remained under pressure on geopolitical tensions between Russia-Ukraine and elevated crude oil prices. Mumbai, Jun 4 (PTI) The rupee depreciated for the second consecutive session and settled for the day lower by 26 paise at 85.87 against the US dollar on Wednesday, largely driven by strong dollar demand from importers. The unit closed the session at 85.87 against the dollar, registering a loss of 26 paise from its previous close. On Tuesday, the rupee depreciated 22 paise to settle at 85.61 against the US dollar. The local unit registered the second consecutive session of fall and has lost 48 paise over the greenback. 'The Indian rupee extended its depreciation for a second consecutive day, emerging as the weakest performer among Asian currencies. This decline was driven by strong dollar demand from importers, a lack of intervention, and weaker-than-expected PMI figures,' said Dilip Parmar, Senior Research Analyst, HDFC Securities. On the domestic macroeconomic front, the Indian services growth broadly steadied in May and was underpinned by healthy demand conditions, new client wins and greater staffing capacity. The seasonally adjusted HSBC India Services PMI Business Activity Index was at 58.8 in May, marginally up from April's 58.7. Market participants are now keenly awaiting the outcome of the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy meeting for direction trade. The Reserve Bank's rate-setting panel started its three-day brainstorming on monetary policy on Wednesday and the outcome is scheduled to be announced on June 6. Experts are of the view that the RBI may reduce the repo rate by 25 bps on Friday and another similar cut in the next policy. SBI research expects the central bank to go in for a 'jumbo' rate cut of 50 bps in June itself. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading lower by 0.15 per cent at 99.07. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.24 per cent to USD 65.79 per barrel in futures trade. 'Technically, the spot USDINR has broken out upwards, forming a bullish chart pattern. The bias for the pair has turned positive, suggesting a further appreciation towards 86.50 in the coming days, with support now established at 85.30,' Parmar added. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex surged 260.74 points, or 0.32 per cent, to close at 80,998.25, while the Nifty rallied 77.70 points, or 0.32 per cent, to 24,620.20. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) purchased equities worth Rs 1,076.18 crore on a net basis on Wednesday, according to exchange data.
