Residents of Tehri village threaten to boycott panchayat polls over lack of road

Time of India16 hours ago

Dehradun: Residents of Kyarda Naemchami village in Bhilangana block of Tehri Garhwal district submitted a memorandum to chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday, threatening to boycott the upcoming panchayat polls if the Panwali-Askanda road, which links their village to Kedarnath road, is not constructed.
The warning came on the same day the state election commissioner announced that polls in 12 districts in the state (excluding Haridwar) will be held in two phases on July 24 and 28, with counting on July 31.
Vishan Kandari, who was among those who handed over the memorandum declaring "No road, no vote" to the Ghansali tehsildar, said, "We are some 30 families in this revenue village, which have been seeking a road for the past 25 years since the state was formed.
The fate of the road continues to hang in the balance despite repeated assurances by multiple political parties who came to power. None of the families here have migrated and we all rely on the income from growing vegetables.
It's just a 1.5km stretch, about 6ft-wide, yet the project remains stuck in govt files year after year."
They said that during the Covid-19 pandemic, villagers had begun constructing the road themselves.
Later, they were assured by the district administration and Ghansali MLA Shakti Lal Shah that the road would be built. However, they are still waiting for connectivity.
"If the elections are held without the road being constructed and our genuine demand is not heard, we will hold sit-ins on the Char Dham yatra road," added another villager Sher Singh.
SDM of Ghansali, Sandeep Kumar, said, "The matter was brought to our notice through this memorandum. We have formed a two-member team comprising a tehsildar and a PWD official to visit the village and address the villagers' concerns."

Desperate stunt: BJP, Congress slam Kejriwal over slum demolition protest

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress launched attacks on former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday, accusing him of hypocrisy and political theatrics over his protest at Jantar Mantar against slum to the Aam Aadmi Party's 'Ghar Rozgar Bachao Andolan', Delhi BJP president Virender Sachdeva called the campaign a 'desperate stunt' aimed at diverting attention from AAP's governance failures. 'Kejriwal owes the people an answer — how many houses has his government actually given to slum dwellers in the last 10 years?' he left the Narela flats in ruins because of his stubbornness. Today's event, held in the name of jhuggi residents, had no clear direction till 11 am It was purely political theatre,' Sachdeva added. Earlier, while addressing the protest at Jantar Mantar, Kejriwal accused Prime Minister Modi of breaking promises made to slum dwellers. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said 'Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Makan', but what he meant was 'Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Maidan'. His promises are false, and I urge you not to fall for them in future,' the AAP chief also took a sharp personal swipe at the Prime Minister, calling him a 'liar' and urged slum dwellers not to vote for the BJP or Congress. AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj echoed the attack, saying, 'If the BJP is hurt by the word 'jhootha', we'll call it 'asatya' instead — but the truth doesn't change.'advertisementHe alleged that the Rekha Gupta-led Delhi government had 'ruined' the city in just five months. 'We had left a perfectly fine Delhi. But these people have ruined it. There are long power cuts, school fees have been hiked, and their ministers and MLAs are busy looting Delhi,' he to Kejriwal' statements, Sachdeva accused him of trying to 'rewrite history' and claimed that it was BJP workers who stepped up during the Covid crisis. 'While BJP workers were arranging food and shelter for slum dwellers, the AAP government was trying to evict them. Now Kejriwal wants to act like their savior, the people of Delhi are not fool,' he BJP chief also condemned the language used by Kejriwal and senior AAP leader Gopal Rai against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 'The kind of words they are using for the Prime Minister reflects their Naxalite mindset. No civil society can accept this kind of behavior. Delhi has already rejected this 'kattar beimaan' (hardcore dishonest) and chaos-spreading Kejriwal.'Sachdeva rejected the AAP's accusations of slum demolitions under the BJP and said it was, in fact, Kejriwal's government that failed to rehabilitate slum dwellers. 'If courts had not stepped in, the condition of these people would have been even worse today,' he said, asserting BJP's commitment to providing permanent housing under the 'Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Makan' the Congress also dismissed Kejriwal's protest as a show of 'crocodile tears' and questioned his credibility on the issue of slum dwellers. Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav posed ten pointed questions to Kejriwal via social media, highlighting AAP's own actions against slums during its the key questions, Yadav asked: 'Is it not true that in 2021, Kejriwal approved the 'Jhuggi Hatao' scheme as Chief Minister? Why is he now pretending to stand with slum dwellers?'He further alleged that former minister Satyendar Jain had announced the closure of the 'Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Makan' scheme in September 202. 'Now Kejriwal is shedding crocodile tears. Why?' Yadav Kejriwal's use of public funds, the Congress asked, 'Did Kejriwal not use the votes of slum dwellers to build his grand 'Sheesh Mahal'? Now that slum residents are becoming homeless, why is he protesting?'Yadav also slammed the AAP for failing to fight for slum dwellers in the Supreme Court and not passing any resolution in the Delhi Assembly to protect them. 'When Congress fought in the Supreme Court, where was the AAP? Under whose pressure was this silence?' he Congress accused Kejriwal of 'hypocrisy' and claimed that his tenure as Chief Minister contradicts his current stance as a supporter of the urban poor.- EndsMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Delhi#AAM AADMI PARTY#Bharatiya Janta Party#Indian National Congress

China's Envoy Urges Australia to Resist US Pressure on Military Spending

China's envoy to Canberra urged Australia not to be 'incited' by NATO's support for US demands to sharply raise defense spending and instead cooperate with Beijing to resolve regional disputes. Ambassador Xiao Qian, in an opinion article published in The Australian newspaper Monday, wrote that both Australia and China rely on the same trade routes and have a major stake in safeguarding maritime security. He emphasized their roles as key trade partners with 'highly complementary' economies. 'Dramatically increasing military spending places a heavy fiscal burden on the countries involved, undermining their efforts to boost economies and improve livelihoods, and further straining a global economy already struggling with weak recovery,' Xiao said. He added some countries at events such as the Group of Seven summit and the recent North Atlantic Treaty Organization meeting have 'hyped up the so-called China threat narrative,' to increase defense spending 'and even incited Australia to follow suit.' Australia spends a little over 2% of its gross domestic product on defense and is under pressure from the US to raise that to 3.5%. The center-left government has pushed back, pointing out it has already increased outlays. At a higher level, Canberra is trying to balance the increasingly confrontational relationship between the US and China, which are respectively Australia's historic security ally and its biggest trading partner. Australia likely wants to avoid raising defense spending excessively and antagonizing Beijing. 'As I often hear from Australian friends, 'we have hundreds of reasons to be friends, and none to be enemies',' Xiao said. NATO leaders last week agreed to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP and renewed their 'ironclad commitment' to mutual security as they aim to push back against an increasingly belligerent Russia. The US wants allies to take up more of the fiscal burden for their own defense so it can focus more heavily on China. Australia's Labor government has managed to rebuild ties with Beijing after they plunged into a deep freeze, which included punitive trade actions against some Australian goods in 2020. The fallout was triggered by the then center-right government calling for a probe into the origins of Covid-19. 'China and Australia are friends, not foes. This should never have been in question,' Xiao said. 'China has been always developing bilateral friendship and co-operation with the utmost sincerity and patience, and we hope Australia will work with us in the same direction.' Post-CAA stir and pandemic lull, uptick in student clashes at Jamia

New Delhi: After a relatively quiet period following the 2019 anti-CAA protests and the lull caused by the pandemic, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has seen a sharp rise in student clashes, with 42 incidents reported in two years – 2023 and 2024 -- reveals an RTI query. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In comparison, the university saw no clashes in 2020 and 2021. Between Jan 2019 and Dec 2024, a total of 55 student clashes were reported. In 2019, the year that saw the university become a focal point of the nationwide agitation against CAA, six incidents were reported. JMI students held sustained protests, with police entering the campus library on Dec 15, sparking outrage across the country. In the following two years, during Covid and the lockdown, no incidents were recorded. While 2022 saw seven incidents, there were 22 reported clashes in 2023 and 20 in 2024. According to the RTI data, the nature of recent incidents is broadly described as "altercations", mostly taking place on the main campus. In 2023, 10 such clashes occurred between Jan and May. The trend continued in 2024, with 11 incidents reported between Jan and July. While the RTI response does not elaborate on the causes of each incident, the records confirm they were officially registered by university authorities. The rise in clashes has been accompanied by a marked increase in disciplinary measures. The number of students who faced action jumped from 17 in 2019 to 47 in 2022, 105 in 2023, and 74 in 2024 — a total of 243 students over four years. The actions ranged from warnings and show-cause notices to suspensions and campus bans. In 2023, Jamia issued 71 show-cause notices, asked 21 students to sign good conduct bonds and banned three from campus. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In 2024, 56 students were issued show-cause, eight put on good conduct bonds, four suspended, and one was banned from the campus. No disciplinary action was taken in 2020 and 2021, the years in which no clashes were reported. Police were involved twice — in 2019 and 2024 — to "restore order and ensure safety", according to the university. Over the six-year period, five FIRs were registered in connection with the altercations — one in 2019 and four in 2024. The FIRs were filed under sections relating to 'causing hurt', though the university declined to disclose specific provisions, citing Section 8(1)(h) of RTI Act, which exempts details that could impede an investigation. Jamia also stated that details on whether any students were detained or arrested were "not available". Between 2019 and 2024, Jamia collected a total of Rs 27,000 in fines. This includes Rs 7,000 in 2019; Rs 4,000 in 2022; Rs 12,500 in 2023; and Rs 3,500 in 2024. No fines were collected in 2020 or 2021. The university's RTI reply does not specify if the clashes were linked to political groups or factions active on campus. Jamia has not held students' union elections since 2006, though student collectives and informal groupings continue to exist. While the RTI data confirms a clear uptick in student unrest on Jamia's campus post-2022 compared to the pandemic years, the university has largely relied on internal disciplinary mechanisms to address the clashes. With fines remaining symbolic and police action minimal, the data reflects a cautious administrative approach.
