Bengaluru stampede: How lack of clarity on social media left RCB fans confused

Bengaluru
Of the many things that went wrong on June 4, when the stampede occurred during the victory celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), tragically killing 11 persons, the most important one was glaring gaps in social media communication. Throughout the day, various updates that were put out by the social media page of RCB conflicted with the communication provided by the Bengaluru City Police (BCP) and Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP), leading to confusion among fans.
'When I woke up, I saw that RCB had announced a victory parade and decided that I would participate in it. In a few hours, I saw again on social media that the police had denied permission for the parade. A few minutes later, there were clips that showed the bus that was supposed to be used for the parade being decorated and even interviews with the crew of the bus. The RCB account also announced shortly after that the parade was back on, and hence, I came near the stadium,' said Nisarga Shivakumar, who was near the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium June 4.
Long-held fantasy
For many years now, every time an image of a huge crowd of a big football club's fans or a concert popped up on social media, RCB fans would share those images with the captions 'Majestic when RCB wins' or 'Bengaluru streets when RCB wins'. So, the idea of a crowd gathering for a victory celebration had long been on fans' mind in the event of RCB winning the final. This fantasy, coupled with RCB's announcements, led fans to believe that a victory parade was definitely going to take place.
The police department's attempt to inform the public that there will not be a parade did not prove effective despite the Home Minister himself speaking on television channels and saying that there will be no parade.
The BCP's official X account did not post any details about the events that will be held, or will not be held, on June 4, whereas the BTP posted that there will be a special felicitation ceremony in the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and only those with tickets or passes would be let inside, by 2.44 p.m.
Significantly, around 3 p.m., RCB yet again said that the victory parade was back on.
Why the messaging about the parade by RCB reached more people is not hard to tell: The official X account of BTP has 6.885 lakh followers, while the official X account of RCB has 75 lakh followers.
Lack of clarity
'It is not just that the RCB account had bigger reach, it is that they were still not clear with their communication. This was not the first time they were doing a big event. They have previously conducted Unboxing events in which all the star players are present. Their communication had always been clear during that event, that only those who bought tickets in advance could go and the rest could pay a small amount and watch it on YouTube. But on June 4, the media team first did not say where the tickets for the event were available. They later said that it would be available on the website, but by then, there were already many rumours on social media,' explained Praveen Shetty, a long-time RCB fan.
He explained that there were rumours that the RCB Fan Army had been given a certain number of tickets, and these could be collected by those who reach the stadium early. 'This might also be why many gathered near the stadium from noon itself,' Mr. Shetty added.
Numbers and responsibility
Priyank Kharge, Minister of Information Technology and Biotechnology (IT & BT) admitted that the State Government, RCB, KSCA, the police and the fans could all have done something better that day. 'The biggest challenge for security right now is social media as people tend to believe whatever they see on their social media feeds. This is why institutions with large followings should have clarity in their messaging. The police, on that day, could have clearly said that it would be difficult to handle the crowd; the RCB account could have informed the fans clearly about stadium capacity and avoided overcrowding,' he said.

KSCA officials quit hours after HC shield from arrest

Karnataka State Cricket Association's (KSCA) secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam have resigned from their posts, owing moral responsibility for the tragic stampede at Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium here on Wednesday, hours after the Karnataka High Court granted them protection from police arrests. In a letter to KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, they said they wished to own moral responsibility though their role was very limited. The stampede and congestion near the stadium led to the death of 11 cricket fans and injuries to scores of others. The resignations followed the state government launching a crackdown on the agencies involved in organising the felicitation events at the Chinnaswamy stadium after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title for the first time. On Thursday, chief minister Siddaramaiah ordered the arrest of senior executives of RCB, KSCA and event manager DNA Entertainment Network. Shankar and Jairam, along with Bhat, moved the High Court on Friday after the police charged the three organisations with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. In their petition, the KSCA office bearers said the association was only a governing body of cricket in Karnataka with affiliation to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It has nothing to do with IPL events and Wednesday's celebrations were organized by RCB franchise and managed by its vendor DNA Entertainment Network, they argued. KSCA's role was limited to making the stadium and its infrastructure available to RCB and DNA. The police, the petitioners alleged, registered the FIR against them under intense pressure and compelling circumstances without any preliminary enquiry.

Espionage case: Punjab YouTuber remanded to police custody

Haryana Police had summoned Punjab-based YouTuber Jasbir Singh on June 6 in the Jyoti Malhotra espionage case but before he could join the investigation, he was arrested by Punjab Police, Singh's counsel claimed on Saturday (June 7, 2025). He also denied the charge that Singh was an agent of Pakistan's spy agency ISI. A Mohali court on Saturday (June 7, 2025) extended for two days the police remand of Singh, who was arrested on espionage charges on June 4. Singh was produced before the court after his three-day police remand ended on Saturday (June 7, 2025). Police sought a seven-day remand of Singh but the court granted them two days, said his counsel. Jasbir Singh alias Jaan Mahal (41), a resident of village Mahlan in Rupnagar district, was running a YouTube channel 'JaanMahal Video' with over 11 lakh subscribers, ostensibly posting travel and cooking vlogs. Also read: Jyoti Rani's police didn't have access to secret information, says Police Singh was allegedly in close touch with Haryana-based influencer Jyoti Malhotra, who is in custody on charges of spying for Pakistan. After Singh's arrest, Punjab police had claimed that it unearthed a 'terror-backed espionage network' linking him to Pakistani intelligence and army officials. Police had said that the YouTuber was allegedly spying for Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Speaking to reporters on Saturday (June 7, 2025), Singh's counsel, Mohit Dhupar, said he met him in the court on Saturday (June 7, 2025). 'We spoke to him. There is no such thing that is being said in the media that he was an ISI agent,' said Dhupar, claiming he was just a vlogger. Dhupar said Singh was summoned by Punjab Police from May 17 till May 30. He had already given his mobile phone and laptop to the police, said the counsel. Dhupar said on June 2, Hisar police summoned Singh to join the investigation in the Jyoti Malhotra case on June 6. When Punjab Police came to know about him being summoned by the Haryana police, Singh was asked to appear on June 3 and he was arrested on June 4, said the counsel. 'Punjab Police might have felt that if Haryana Police arrested Singh, it would be their insult', claimed Dhupar. The counsel said there was no mention of Singh being summoned from May 17 to May 30 in the FIR. Hisar native Malhotra (33) who was running a YouTube channel 'Travel with JO' was arrested last month. To a question on Punjab Police claiming that 150 Pakistani contacts were retrieved from his phone, Dhupar said there was no such thing. 'Many people visited Pakistan multiple times. Did they become guilty (of doing wrong) by visiting the neighbouring nation,' he said while replying to a question. On Pakistani YouTuber Nasir Dhillon's alleged link to a spy network, Dhupar said the police did not take Dhillon's name in the court while seeking Singh's remand. Nasir Dhillon, a former Pakistani police official, runs a YouTube channel 'Punjabi Lehar'. He has claimed to unite families divided during partition in 1947. His role is reportedly under investigation for possible links to the espionage network unearthed by Indian authorities. Asked whether Singh gave his laptop to Pakistani official Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, Dhupar denied it and said when Singh visited Pakistan, his laptop was examined for a routine security check. On May 13, India expelled Danish, who was posted at the Pakistan High Commission, for allegedly indulging in espionage. Jasbir Singh was allegedly found to be associated with a Pakistani Intelligence Operative (PIO). He was in contact with a Pakistan High Commission official who was recently expelled from New Delhi on charges of spying and had met Pakistan Army officials during one of his three visits to the neighbouring country, police had earlier said. He was allegedly in close contact with Jyoti Malhotra, who was earlier arrested by Haryana Police on espionage charges. Singh was found to be associated with Pakistani Intelligence Operative (PIO) Shakir, alias Jutt Randhawa. The accused had also travelled to Pakistan on three occasions including in 2020, 2021 and 2024, and came into direct contact with ISI officers, who subsequently cultivated and recruited him to carry out espionage activities within India, police had said. Investigations revealed that Singh attended the Pakistan National Day event in Delhi on Danish's invitation, where he met Pakistani Army officials and vloggers. After Jyoti Malhotra's arrest, accused Singh had attempted to erase all traces of his communications with these PIOs to avoid detection, police had said. The police had alleged that Singh was in touch with many Pakistan-based entities, including ISI agents and had been providing sensitive information about the movement of the Indian Army and other inside activities of the country to Pakistan.
