NEW YORK (AP) — Cuba had a record 26 players on Major League Baseball's opening day rosters and Japan had 12 for its most since 2012.
The percentage born outside the 50 states remained at 27.8%, matching its lowest level since 2016.
There were 265 players from 18 nations and territories outside of the 50 states among 954 players on opening day active rosters and injured, restricted and inactive lists, the commissioner's office said Friday.
Cuba's total topped its previous high of 23 in 2016, 2017 and 2022. Japan's total was its most since 13 in 2012.
The overall percentage matched last year and was down 28.5% in 2023, which was the lowest since 27.5% in 2016. It has remained in the 26-29.8% range since 2002, peaking in 2017.
The total international players was the fourth-highest behind 291 in 2020 (when there were expanded 30-man active rosters), 275 in 2022 (when there were expanded 28-man active rosters) and 270 in 2023.
The Dominican Republic led countries outside the U.S. with 100, down from 108 last year and 110 in 2020. Canada's 13 matched last year for its most since 17 in 2013.
Venezuela was second at 63, followed by Cuba (26), Puerto Rico (16), Canada (13), Japan (12), Mexico (11), Curacao and Panama (four), South Korea (three), Aruba, Australia and Colombia (two) and Bahamas, Brazil, Germany, Honduras, Nicaragua and South Africa (one apiece).
Atlanta catcher Chadwick Tromp joined San Diego infielder Xander Bogaerts to give Aruba two players for the first time.
San Francisco's Jung Hoo Lee and Philadelphia's Jesús Luzardo were listed as miscellaneous, Lee as born in Japan of South Korean descent and Luzardo as born in Peru of Venezuelan descent.
Houston and San Diego topped teams with 16 international players each, with the Astros having a share of the lead for the fifth straight season. They were followed by Atlanta (14), the New York Mets (13) and Baltimore and Miami (12 each).
The 18 nations and territories outside the U.S. matched last year and were three shy of the high, set in 2018 and matched in 2022.

Haaland collected a through ball from playmaker Martin Odegaard and rounded goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the box for the third goal three minutes before halftime. Striker Alexander Sorloth received a precise pass from Antonio Nusa then beat Donnarumma with a left foot shot. Nusa, the 20-year-old attacking midfielder, was a constant threat to the Italian defense. He left behind two defenders and doubled the advantage with a rising shot from inside the area. Italy was missing some regulars for its first qualifying match, while others failed to impress, including Mateo Retegui, the best Serie A scorer. Braves calling up Craig Kimbrel from Triple-A after bullpen's 7-run meltdown in 9th inning vs. D-backs
Craig Kimbrel is returning to the Atlanta Braves bullpen. The Braves are calling up their former All-Star closer from Triple-A Gwinnett, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported on Thursday. Atlanta officially announced the move on Friday, adding that reliever Daysbel Hernández (2.22 ERA in 25 appearances) has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right forearm inflammation. Advertisement The decision was likely prompted by the Braves blowing a six-run lead in the ninth inning Thursday versus the Arizona Diamondbacks, leading to an 11-10 loss. Atlanta took a 10-5 lead into the ninth. Three of Arizona's first four batters reached base against Scott Blewett, including home runs by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Alek Thomas. Raisel Iglesias relieved Blewett and didn't fare better, allowing five of the next six batters on base with RBI hits by Ketel Marte, Ildemaro Vargas and Eugenio Suárez resulting in four runs and an Arizona lead. Ultimately, five runs were charged to Blewett and Iglesias gave up the lead with the three he allowed. "We're not a bad team. We're a good team that's playing bad," Braves manager Brian Snitker said after the game. "We're all going to be miserable, and we should. We didn't execute and put the game away, and we've got to do that." With the loss, Atlanta dropped to 27-34, placing them fourth in the National League West and 11 games behind the first-place New York Mets. The Braves are also seven games out of the NL's third wild-card playoff berth. Advertisement In 18 minor league appearances this season (15 for Gwinnett), Kimbrel has compiled a 2.00 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 18 innings with 8 walks and 9 hits allowed. Kimbrel, 37, pitched the first five seasons of his career with the Braves, collecting a 1.43 ERA and 186 saves in 294 appearances. He won the 2011 National League Rookie of the Year award and made four All-Star teams during his stint with Atlanta. The right-hander was traded to the San Diego Padres before the 2015 season and he's played for six other teams since then. Last season, he had a 5.33 ERA for the Orioles in 57 appearances despite a strikeout rate of 12.6 per nine innings and was released in late September. Advertisement However, Kimbrel had a 2.80 ERA, 53 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings and 23 saves before the All-Star break. 'Hopefully, he can replicate what he did the first half of last year,' Snitker said when Atlanta signed Kimbrel in the spring. 'It would be awesome if he could come in and do that." During his 15 MLB seasons, Kimbrel has compiled a 2.59 ERA and 440 saves with a strikeout rate of 14.1 per 9 innings. Blewett's outing was his last for the Braves. The team announced that he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday for cash considerations. Atlanta was planning to DFA Blewett (5.51 ERA in 11 games) after Thursday's game, but worked out a deal with Baltimore. It's a return to Baltimore for the right-hander, who appeared in two games for the Orioles before being designated for assignment and traded to Atlanta. Blewett began the season with the Minnesota Twins, but received a DFA and was picked up by the Orioles.

Kyle Teel gets a new shirt as he joins the Chicago White Sox for big league debut
CHICAGO (AP) — Kyle Teel has a new collared shirt and his own big league opportunity. Teel, one of the majors' top prospects, was brought up by the Chicago White Sox on Friday. The 23-year-old catcher was in the starting lineup for the opener of a weekend series against Kansas City, batting sixth. Advertisement Teel was acquired in the Garrett Crochet trade with the Boston Red Sox in December. He batted .295 with eight homers and 30 RBIs in 50 games with Triple-A Charlotte. When Chase Meidroth, another prospect who was acquired by the White Sox in the Crochet deal, was brought up in April, Meirdroth told Teel he might need a collared shirt for his major league arrival, and Teel gave the infielder one of his own. So Charlotte manager Sergio Santos returned the favor when he broke the news to Teel that he was going to Chicago, handing over a new shirt. Teel was the No. 14 pick in the 2023 amateur draft out of the University of Virginia. His arrival marks a positive moment for a last-place White Sox team in the middle of a painful rebuilding process.
