Russell Westbrook Contract Decision Has Massive Salary Implications for Nuggets
Russell Westbrook Contract Decision Has Massive Salary Implications for Nuggets originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Denver Nuggets' core roster is already slated to look a bit different in 2025-26, and the 2024-25 NBA offseason hasn't even officially begun just yet. Advertisement Denver majority owner Josh Kroenke shockingly fired both 10-year head coach Michael Malone and championship general manager Calvin Booth with just days remaining in the Nuggets' regular season, replacing them with interim head coach David Adelman and interim GM Ben Tazer. While Adelman has shaken the interim sticker and will serve as the Nuggets' long-term head coaching option, Tazer's status is more tenuous, even with the 2025 NBA Draft and free agency now just weeks away. The Nuggets finished the regular season with a 50-32 record and pushed the NBA Finals-bound Oklahoma City Thunder to seven games in their second round playoff encounter. Denver was severely hampered by that seventh semifinal contest, with starting forwards Michael Porter Jr. and Aaron Gordon striving to play through major injuries. Apr 9, 2025; Sacramento, California, USA; Denver Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook (4) directs his team against the Sacramento Kings during the first quarter at Golden 1 Center. Mandatory Credit: Ed Szczepanski-Imagn Images Ed Szczepanski-Imagn Images Adelman's rotations were fairly limited, and he had to lean on erratic or unproven bench players to add a spark. Eventually, the Nuggets' luck ran out. Advertisement One of those bench pieces appears to be ready to move on. Former nine-time All-Star and 2017 league MVP Russell Westbrook will reportedly decline his $3.47 million player option for next year and instead explore unrestricted free agency, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line (via Substack). Westbrook, 36, had until June 29 to make a decision on the second year of the two-season deal he had agreed to with Denver last summer. The 6-foot-4 UCLA alum is now slated to join potentially his seventh NBA franchise across the last eight seasons. Still, there's a chance Westbrook could stick around. Advertisement He averaged solid numbers off the bench for Denver, while staying healthy throughout the regular season and playoffs. Across 75 available regular season bouts, Westbrook averaged 13.3 points on a .449/.323/.661 slash line, 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.4 swipes. In reduced playing time, those numbers shrank a bit during the postseason. He averaged 11.7 points on inefficient shooting splits of .391/.317/.700, along with 3.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists (against 2.3 turnovers), and 0.9 steals. The biggest issues with Westbrook are his inclination to hold the ball for too long (especially on a team with elite creators like three-time MVP center Nikola Jokic and guard Jamal Murray), his inconsistent off-ball effort, his poor jump-shooting, and his disengaged defense. He may have some value as an eighth man, especially in the regular season, but giving him significant playoff minutes at this stage is risky. Bobby Marks of ESPN unpacks how Denver's cap situation benefits from Westbrook's reported decision. The Nuggets are understandably desperate to help Jokic win his second title with the franchise after two disappointing second round playoff exits. Denver thankfully now has some breathing room below the NBA's harshly punitive second luxury tax apron, with 12 players currently signed. Advertisement The team can now use its $5.7 taxpayer mid-level exception, a mechanism that would have been unavailable to Denver as a second apron team, and two veteran minimum slots to add new talent around its core of Jokic, Murray and Gordon. Key swingman Christian Braun is still on his rookie-scale contract at present, but will become extension-eligible this summer, and could fetch a major raise. But the Nuggets can worry about what a likely-pricey Braun deal kicking in for 2025-26 will do to their payroll later. For now, the team should focus on affordable help for Jokic, and perhaps sniff around possible Porter trade packages. Giancarlo Stanton holds keys to making his Yankees return — but it likely won't be for Red Sox series
Access the Yankees beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Greg Joyce about the inside buzz on the Yankees. Try it free BOSTON — The ball is in Giancarlo Stanton's court. But it no longer sounds as if he could be in play for the Yankees this weekend. Advertisement Instead of joining the big league team at Fenway Park for its series against the Red Sox, Stanton was at Yankee Stadium on Friday, doing a light workout after playing three straight rehab games. The expectation is he likely will play in another rehab game Saturday at Double-A, which makes it unlikely he then would come to Boston to play in Sunday's day-game series finale. 3 Giancarlo Stanton is pictured before the Yankees' game against the Rangers on May 20. Jason Szenes for the NY Post 'I'm not necessarily expecting him to play this weekend, but stranger things have happened, too,' manager Aaron Boone said Friday afternoon. Advertisement Stanton has missed the first two and a half months of the season with tendinitis in both elbows, a condition he played through last year and has said he will have to manage even once he comes back this season. He appears to be in a spot where the pain is tolerable, and Boone said the DH has 'checked the boxes' with the training staff in terms of his running progression and all the swings he has taken in recent weeks. 3 Giancarlo Stanton is pictured during the Yankees' game against the Padres on May 6. Robert Sabo for the NY Post Advertisement 'The biggest say is probably Big G's now,' Boone said. Boone said he has been 'pleased' with what he has seen on video of Stanton's at-bats with Double-A Somerset, going 3-for-11 with a walk and three strikeouts. The results are negligible, but Boone has been looking for how Stanton has been reacting to pitches. Advertisement 'What's the quality of the pitch, what's the take look like, is he getting into a strong position, making a good move at the ball?' Boone said. 'Some of the at-bats I've seen, I feel like he's recognizing balls out of the zone and things like that. He looks strong to me when he lets it go. 'His at-bats look good. He's very detailed and particular about how he feels. He feels like his timing's pretty good right now, and he feels up to speed on the fastball and things like that. Definitely my sense in the little bit of communication I've had with him this week is that he feels like he's close.' Exactly how close remains something of a mystery, as the Yankees have remained nebulous on specifics with Stanton's timeline for a return all along. 3 Giancarlo Stanton hits a sacrifice fly during the Game 5 of the World Series against the Dodgers. Robert Sabo for the NY Post It seems to be more of a feel thing at this point — as in, Stanton will know it when he feels ready, but evidently, that has not happened yet. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS While the Yankees are being patient with Stanton — helped by the fact that their offense has performed well without him — they eagerly await his return. Advertisement 'Can't wait,' Aaron Judge said this week. 'Everybody in this room can't wait to see him. … He's a big part of this team. He means a lot on the field but also in this clubhouse. He's such a leader, such a mentor to a lot of the guys, especially the younger guys. It's going to be nice to get him back.' Once Stanton does return, the Yankees will have to figure out the looming playing time logjam. The 35-year-old is not expected to play every day, at least not early on as he settles into the groove of the season. Advertisement But the Yankees already have to sit one of Ben Rice, Trent Grisham, Jasson Domínguez, Cody Bellinger or Paul Goldschmidt on a daily basis, and soon two of them (adding Stanton into that group) will be out of the lineup on a given day as long as they all stay healthy. 'I've even talked with Big G a month ago, talking through scenarios and things like that,' Boone said. 'But we'll figure it out. … I think we'll have great buy-in from our guys. That team in there, especially where guys are in their career, they want to win. We'll try to put everyone in the best position to be successful and also try to keep everyone sharp and regular. Doesn't mean it's going to be perfect, but we'll do the best we can with it.'

Tigers Make Big Announcement to Celebrate Historic Start to Season
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Detroit Tigers are off to their best start after 70 games — slightly more than 40 percent of the season — since 2006. That was the year the Tigers returned to the World Series after a 21-year absence. Despite losing to the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 in the Fall Classic, the Tigers won 95 games that season. After 70 they stood at 46-24. This year, the Tigers are just one game behind that 2006 pace, one of two teams with a 45-25 record, the best in MLB. That's also 11 games ahead of where the Tigers were last year, at 34-36. DETROIT, MICHIGAN - JUNE 08: Gleyber Torres #25, Wenceel Pérez #46, Riley Greene #31 and Parker Meadows #22 of the Detroit Tigers celebrate their win against the Chicago Cubs at Comerica Park on June 08,... DETROIT, MICHIGAN - JUNE 08: Gleyber Torres #25, Wenceel Pérez #46, Riley Greene #31 and Parker Meadows #22 of the Detroit Tigers celebrate their win against the Chicago Cubs at Comerica Park on June 08, 2025 in Detroit, Michigan. MoreThe only other 45-25 team after 70 games is the New York Mets. But there is one big difference between the two teams. The Mets are paying heavily for their 45 wins, with a payroll of $324.2 million — second highest in MLB, roughly $12.6 million behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Tigers payroll? At $144.1 million, Detroit ranks 18th of all big league clubs and pays out just 44 percent of what the Mets are spending. What accounts for the Tigers' surprising success? Any number of factors, of course, but the most important has to be pitching. At 3.22 Detroit boasts the fourth-best ERA in MLB and second-lowest in the American League. Led by 28-year-old lefty Tarik Skubal, last season's AL Cy Young Award winner with a 1.99 ERA in a league-leading 90 1/3 innings pitched, Tigers starters have the second-best ERA in the majors, at 3.03, behind only the Mets (2.79). And while their overall bullpen ERA is an 11th-ranked 3.54, the Tigers have three relievers who have thrown at least 30 innings with an ERA under 2.00. They are Will Vest (1.83), Tommy Kahnle (1.50), and Brant Hurter (1.75). More MLB: Tigers Urged To Reunite With Familiar Face By Former MLB Executive The Tigers' success extends beyond the baseball field, according to an announcement by the team on Friday. The red-hot club is drawing big TV numbers. "Tigers games on FanDuel Sports Network Detroit rank as some of the most-watched programming across baseball this year," the team said in the announcement. "Through June 9, average household impressions on our linear television broadcasts have jumped 82 percent compared to the same point last season, the largest such increase for any MLB team (excluding Toronto)." The Tigers' local TV ratings, an average of 4.46 per game, rank second among all MLB teams. Streaming numbers are also up — way up — according to the Tigers' announcement, with a jump of 93 percent compared to last season. The Tigers open a three-game inter-league series against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday at Comerica Park. Hurter will get the start, only his third of the season, in what is slated as a bullpen game for Detroit. More MLB: Brewers Sensational Pitching Prospect Has Bizarre, Mind-Blowing MLB Debut
