Ford Motor Company: Understanding the automaker's history, legacy
Explore the rich history of Ford Motor Company, from its groundbreaking assembly line innovations to iconic cars like the Model T, Mustang, and F-150.
The Ford Bronco and Bronco Sport received less than marginal ratings in recent IIHS safety tests.
The Bronco Sport showed heightened risk for head and neck injuries in the rear seat.
Six other vehicles earned the Top Safety Pick+ award, including models from Hyundai, Kia, Toyota and Nissan.
The Ford Bronco and Ford Bronco Sport SUVs failed to meet the marginal ratings to qualify for a top safety pick in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's latest safety ratings, with the institute noting there is a heightened risk for head and neck injuries in the rear seat of the Bronco Sport.
On June 10, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety — a nonprofit group owned by auto insurers with the purpose of reducing injuries from car crashes — said it tested nine vehicles and awarded six models from four different brands a 2025 Top Safety Pick+ award.
Three of the vehicles tested — the Volkswagen Taos, Ford Bronco and Bronco Sport — did not earn a top safety ranking, rather came as "adequate," due to subpar performance in one or more of the required tests, the institute said in its findings.
The crash tests showed both Broncos put rear seat passengers at an elevated risk of chest injuries. The Taos got inadequate results in the front crash test and for its headlights and pedestrian crash avoidance system.
A spokesperson from Volkswagen did not immediately respond to inquiries for comment on the results.
Special Edition Broncos: Ford ignites off-road adventure with two new Bronco project vehicles
Ford Motor Co. spokesman Mike Levine emailed the following statement to the Detroit Free Press: "The 2025 Bronco and Bronco Sport meet or exceed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) regulatory requirements. Both Bronco and Bronco Sport have earned overall 5-star NHTSA New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) ratings, and Bronco is currently the only vehicle in its segment to achieve a five-star overall vehicle score in NHTSA's testing."
The Top Safety Pick+ winners
The insurance institute said to qualify for either Top Safety Pick+ or the lower-tier Top Safety Pick award this year, vehicles need good ratings in the small overlap front crash test. That test simulates a crash where a small portion of the front of the vehicle impacts another vehicle or barrier.
Also, vehicles must get a good rating in updated side tests, an acceptable or good rating in the pedestrian front crash prevention evaluation and acceptable or good-rated headlights across all trim levels.
The institute said getting an acceptable rating in its updated moderate overlap front test is enough to qualify for Top Safety Pick, but a good rating is required to earn Top Safety Pick+. The moderate overlap test simulates a head-on collision where the vehicle's front overlaps 40% of a stationary vehicle's width at 40 mph. Its purpose is to measure rear-seat occupant protection.
The 2025 models that did receive the Top Safety Pick+ ranking were: Hyundai Elantra, Kia K4 and Toyota Prius, all small cars; the Hyundai Sonata midsize car, the Toyota bZ4X electric small SUV, and the Nissan Murano midsize SUV.
The institute said for some vehicles the Top Safety Pick+ award applies only to models built after the date when the manufacturer made improvements to rear occupant protection. For example, the award applies to Elantras built after October 2024, Sonatas built after November 2024 and K4s built after January 2025. The bZ4X award is for vehicles built after December 2024, when the headlights on its XLE trim were changed to the current good-rated ones.
Ford and VW fall short of meeting crash metrics
The insurance institute report said new ratings also are available for the Ford Bronco, Ford Bronco Sport and Volkswagen Taos, but "these models did not earn awards due to inadequate performance in one or more of the required tests."
"The Bronco was disqualified from contention because of marginal ratings for its headlights, pedestrian front crash prevention system and moderate overlap crash performance," the institute wrote. "In the moderate overlap test, measurements taken from the rear dummy indicated an elevated risk of chest injuries, though the Bronco performed well by most other metrics."
Ford's Bronco Sport also failed the same evaluation, but for different reasons. The institute said during the test, "the rear dummy's lap belt slid up onto the abdomen from the ideal position on the pelvis, which increases the chances of internal injuries. Measurements taken from the rear dummy also indicated an elevated risk of injuries to the chest and head or neck."
The Bronco Sport earned the group's "acceptable rating" in the updated side test, primarily because of high injury metrics for the driver's pelvis.
The institute said the 2025 Volkswagen Taos earned "only" an acceptable rating in the small overlap front test because the safety cage, which is designed to protect occupants, did not hold up well. It also fell short in the updated moderate overlap front test and earned subpar ratings for its headlights and pedestrian crash avoidance system.
"Although Volkswagen added pretensioners and load limiters to the rear seat belts in the Taos in January 2025, chest injury metrics for the rear passenger remained high in the moderate overlap test," the report stated.

Sector Spotlight: Automakers get rare earth export license clearance from China
Welcome to the latest edition of 'Sector Spotlight,' where The Fly looks at a new industry every week and highlights its happenings. Confident Investing Starts Here: AUTO SECTOR NEWS: Tesla (TSLA) upgraded its Model S and Model X cars in the U.S. and raised the prices of all configurations of the two models by $5,000, Reuters reported. The NHTSA announced the next step in its new Automated Vehicle Framework. 'To facilitate automated driving systems technology reaching its full potential to transform roadway safety, NHTSA is streamlining its exemption process for commercial deployment of vehicles and adopting a dynamic and flexible approach to evaluating these exemptions. These improvements will allow NHTSA to process ADS and other exemptions more quickly while also allowing NHTSA to prioritize safety through a tailored and progressive operational oversight approach,' the agency said. Tesla has filed a lawsuit against former Optimus engineer Zhongjie Li, who worked at Tesla from 2022 to 2024, accusing him of stealing humanoid robot information and setting up a rival startup, Bloomberg's Dana Hull wrote. 'Less than a week after he left Tesla, Proception was incorporated,' according to the complaint. 'And within just five months, Proception publicly claimed to have 'successfully built' advanced humanoid robotic hands — hands that bear a striking resemblance to the designs Li worked on at Tesla.' President Trump received a phone call from Tesla CEO Elon Musk late on Monday night, which led to a public expression of regret from Musk overnight for his social media posts, Jonathan Swan and Theodore Schleifer of New York Times reported, citing three people briefed on the call. Musk's call came after he spoke privately on Friday with Vice President JD Vance and the White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles, about a path to a truce between the two men. In a post on X, Tesla CEO Musk responded to question about when the first public robotaxi rides will start, stating: 'Tentatively, June 22. We are being super paranoid about safety, so the date could shift. First Tesla that drives itself from factory end of line all the way to a customer house is June 28.' Nissan (NSANY) supplier Marelli Holdings announced that it has commenced voluntary chapter 11 cases in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware in order to comprehensively restructure its long-term debt obligations. Approximately 80% of the company's lenders have signed an agreement to support the restructuring, which will deleverage Marelli's balance sheet and strengthen its liquidity position. Throughout this process and moving forward, Marelli does not expect any operational impact from the chapter 11 process, and the company 'will continue to work closely with its customers, suppliers, and partners to innovate and invest in its portfolio of advanced technologies that will differentiate the vehicles of the future and transform mobility,' it said. General Motors (GM) announced plans to invest about $4B over the next two years in its domestic manufacturing plants to increase U.S. production of both gas and electric vehicles. The new investment will give GM the ability to assemble more than two million vehicles per year in the U.S. This announcement comes on the heels of the company's recently announced plan to invest $888M in the Tonawanda Propulsion plant near Buffalo, New York to support GM's next-generation V-8 engine. Intrado Life & Safety and Toyota Connected North America announced a collaboration to provide Advanced Automatic Collision Notification, telematics data to public safety answering points in an i3-compliant format. The data, delivered via AT&T's nationwide ESInet solution, helps 9-1-1 telecommunicators quickly deploy appropriate emergency response resources based on accident severity. Daimler Truck AG (DTRUY), Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation, Hino Motors, and Toyota (TM) concluded definitive agreements for the integration of Mitsubishi Fuso and Hino. Mitsubishi Fuso and Hino will integrate on an equal footing and cooperate in the areas of commercial vehicle development, procurement, and production. They are aiming to start operations in April 2026. Daimler Truck and Toyota will each aim to own 25% of the listed holding company of the integrated Mitsubishi Fuso and Hino. The holding company plans to own 100% of Mitsubishi Fuso and Hino. The intention is to list the holding company on the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Further details on the scope and nature of the collaboration, including the name of the new holding company, are intended to be announced over the coming months, the companies stated. One of Tesla's top AI-executives, VP of engineering Milan Kovac, has left the company, a setback for the Optimus robotics project, Becky Peterson of The Wall Street Journal wrote. Kovac oversaw Tesla's development of Optimus, a humanoid robot central to Musk's vision of transforming Tesla into a robotics and AI company. China has granted temporary export licenses to rare-earth suppliers of the top three U.S. automakers as supply chain disruptions begin to surface from the country's export curbs on those materials, Reuters' Laurie Chen and David Shepardson reported. At least some of the licenses are valid for six months, the two sources say. It is unclear what quantity or items are covered by the approval Suppliers of General Motors (GM), Ford (F), and Stellantis (STLA) received clearance for some rare earth export licenses on Monday, one source said. ANALYST COMMENTARY: Guggenheim said that while Tesla shares continue to be driven by robotaxi and political narratives in the near-term, the company's fundamentals 'continue to deteriorate at an alarming rate.' The 'soft' Q2 delivery trends confirm demand for the refreshed Model Y has not helped Tesla's sales momentum, says Guggenheim, which expects 'sizable' negative revisions in the coming weeks to Q2 delivery estimates. The firm's 360,000 estimate is well below the consensus of 415,000. Flowing through lower delivery forecasts for Q2 pushes the company's auto gross margin forecast to 11.5%, below the 14.0% consensus, and free cash flow forecast into negative territory, the analyst told. Guggenheim believes Tesla's Q2 should have benefited from pent-up demand for the Model Y refresh, suggesting future delivery volumes and/or pricing could deteriorate further. It believes 2025 and 2026 expectations for Tesla 'remain incredibly optimistic and bullish catalysts for the automotive business continue to be disproven.' Piper Sandler kept an Overweight rating with a $400 price target on Tesla, but contends that the stock will likely sustain its upward momentum over the coming weeks. Driverless Teslas have been spotted on the streets of Austin, Texas and CEO Musk has acknowledged the deployment while predicting licensing agreements, with the 'key component' of the firm's bullish thesis has started to play out, the analyst tells investors in a research note. Piper warns however that any high-profile robotaxi accidents would likely be met with 'violent downside'. Argus downgraded Tesla to Hold from Buy with no price target. The stock 'appears to be currently trading on non-fundamental events,' says the analyst, who is concerned that the 'war of words' between President Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, along with expiration of EV credits, could further weaken demand for new Teslas. While the firm believes AI-related projects such as Cybercab and Optimus are positive for the company and its valuation, it believes a near-term Hold rating is 'prudent at this time,' the analyst said.

Metavista Provides Disclosure Clarifications
VANCOUVER, BC / / June 13, 2025 / Metavista3D Inc. (TSXV:DDD)(FSE:E3T) ("Metavista3D" or the "Company") announces that, as a result of a continuous disclosure review by the British Columbia Securities Commission (the "BCSC"), the Company is issuing the following news release to provide clarity regarding its press releases of December 6, 2024, January 14, 2025, January 16, 2025, January 20, 2025, January 24, 2025, January 29, 2025, and February 18, 2025. Automotive Industry and E-mirror SystemOn December 6, 2024, and January 29, 2025, the Company announced that it is engaging with automotive manufactures to provide innovative solutions for replacing traditional physical mirrors, on the basis that its patented technology solves the problem of "blind spots" when merging or changing lanes while driving, a leading cause of motor vehicle accidents. The Company wishes to clarify that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) currently does not permit e-mirror systems under existing regulations, and the Company has not applied for, nor received, any approval, certification, or exemption from NHTSA for the use of its 3D e-mirror system in vehicles. The claim that the Company's patented technology eliminates physical mirror blind spots is based on research published in an academic paper authored by its Chief Technology Officer, and at this time has not been independently validated by third-party entities. While the Company is optimistic about the potential application of its technology in the automotive sector, the e-mirror system is still under development. The Company has conducted internal tests to validate this application and has developed a demonstration unit, which was showcased at recent trade shows. The next key milestone in the technology's development is to secure a commercialization partner with industry-specific expertise to help bring the product to market and facilitate engagement with the TÜV (Technical Inspection Association) in Germany. The TÜV assessment process will involve rigorous testing so timing and outcome are uncertain. These results will help demonstrate the system's ability to meet established automotive safety standards, and form the basis for the application to the NHTSA, should such an application be warranted. The Company is currently in discussions with automotive manufacturers regarding potential collaboration opportunities; however, no formal agreements have been entered into at this time. In the absence of support from a tier 1 of tier 2 automotive supplier, the Company does not currently intend to apply for approval, certification, or exemption from the NHTSA in respect of its e-mirror technology. The regulatory pathway for automotive integration of the e-mirror systems is complex and jurisdiction-specific. At this time, the specific steps, timeline, and costs associated with obtaining the necessary approvals remain uncertain and will depend on the requirements of both regulatory bodies and prospective commercialization partners. 3D Enhancement Capabilities with Apple iPhoneOn January 16, 2025, the Company announced that it had introduced a proprietary technology at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) which elevates the 3D capturing capabilities of Apple Inc.'s new spatial photo and video feature. The Company further announced that its patented solution overcomes the depth perception limitations of the iPhone and that the next step in development of the technology would be to have a Metavista3D display on the iPhone or other smartphones. The Company acknowledges that Apple has not publicly disclosed or confirmed any such limitation in its hardware. Any reference to such limitations by the Company is based solely on internal interpretation and not on publicly confirmed data from Apple. The Company wishes to clarify that, while Metavista3D's stereo-based extension technology has been patented and described in an academic paper authored by the Company's CTO, it has not yet been validated by independent third-party reviewers. At present, the Company does not have any formal relationship, partnership, or engagement with Apple in respect of the integration of the Company's stereo-based extension technology with the iPhone. Such integration would depend on access to Apple's proprietary hardware and software, which has not been granted. Absent a formal relationship, the specific steps, timelines, and cost estimates for integration are currently uncertain. 65-inch Super Multiview DisplayOn January 20, 2025, the Company announced the launch of its 65-inch Super Multiview nano lenticular display and included statements such as "groundbreaking," "significant leap forward," "trailblazer," and "we are excited to offer a product that not only meets the demands of today's consumers but also sets the stage for future innovations in spatial reality." The Company wishes to clarify that the characterization of the 65-inch Super Multiview nano-lenticular display as "groundbreaking" is primarily due to its unprecedented size. Previously, Super Multiview displays were limited to much smaller formats, with optical elements produced using machines that could not exceed 43 inches. While the Company believes that the 65-inch Super Multiview display is a significant advancement based on publicly documented standards in existing commercial 3D display systems, no independent third-party validation of performance claims has been completed at this time. Currently, the Company's focus has been on making 65-inch demonstration units available to potential customers and launch partners in order to generate bulk orders for the product. Selling demonstration units enables the Company to showcase its technology's capabilities to industry stakeholders, with the goal of driving sales of existing products or entering into a joint agreement to fund the capital expenditures required for large-scale manufacturing. The display is presently supported by general-purpose processors (GPUs) suitable for small batch deployment, prototyping, and demonstration purposes. To scale to full commercial production, the Company must port its software to dedicated hardware platforms such as FPGAs (Field-Programmable Gate Arrays) or ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits). While the end use case remains the same, the choice between a FPGA and an ASIC based platform is primarily driven by the intended production scale and commercialization strategy. FPGAs are reprogrammable hardware platforms that allow for greater flexibility during development. FPGA-based implementations enable the Company to modify and update its software after deployment, so are well-suited for limited commercial production where speed to market and adaptability are critical. In contrast, ASICs are custom-designed chips that are manufactured for high-volume, cost-sensitive applications. Once they are fabricated, ASICs cannot be modified, but they offer significant advantages in terms of size and unit cost at scale. ASIC-based implementations are intended for large-scale commercial production, typically involving hundreds of thousands or millions of units, where efficiency and unit economics are key drivers. The Company estimates that it will cost approximately $575,000 for the development of the FPGA-based implementation. For full-scale commercial manufacturing using ASIC-based hardware, the Company anticipates costs of approximately $5,000,000. This estimate includes not only the design and fabrication of custom chips but also the associated expenses for display hardware inventory, packaging, marketing, and other components required to scale and commercialize the 65" Super Multiview display. If the customer chooses a GPU-based software solution, meaning the software runs on a standard computer, the Company can fulfill the order with minimal lead time. However, if an FPGA-based solution is required, the estimated development and integration timeline is approximately nine months. For customers requesting an ASIC-based implementation, the estimated development and integration timeline is approximately twelve months, independent of any FPGA development. The Company has identified an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and supplier of display systems to begin optimizing the Company's software in preparation for the FPGA development. The Company does not expect any supply chain constraints expected to impact delivery schedules or production planning, nor does the Company anticipate any certification or compliance requirements that would materially affect the timeline to bring the FPGA-based displays to market. The Company has sufficient resources to support the development of its FPGA integration and the commercialization of its ASIC-based solution. However, the Company does not intend to proceed with a full-scale ASIC-based launch without first securing a suitable commercialization partner. This strategic decision is driven by the belief that partnering with a well-established brand with strong market recognition and an existing distribution network will significantly enhance sales potential. To that end, the Company intends to pursue a licensing or white-label model, under which its display products would be marketed under a partner's branding and distributed through their established sales channels. The Company cautions that there is uncertainty as to whether such strategic partnerships will be available on terms acceptable to the Company, or at all. Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs)On January 14, January 24, and February 3, 2025, the Company announced the signing of memorandums of understanding (the "MOUs") between the Company and each of Caliverse Inc., Incari GmbH, and Brainbit, respectively. The Company wishes to clarify that the MOUs are non-binding and represent expressions of mutual interest and intent to explore potential collaboration. At this stage, none of the MOUs include commitments to invest capital, share revenues, or otherwise undertake joint financial obligations between the parties. Pursuant to the MOUs, the Company agreed to deliver a prototype display on the specifications provided by each party to demonstrate the application to their stakeholders, research teams, and customers. Based on that feedback, each party and the Company will enter into an agreement specifying the number of units to be produced and the commercial terms relating thereto. Accordingly, key commercial terms such as pricing, delivery schedules, quantities, and other critical elements are still under negotiation and have not been finalized between the Company and each party. Hong Kong SubsidiaryOn February 18, 2025, the Company announced the establishment of a wholly-owned subsidiary, Metavista3D Asia Limited, in Hong Kong. The Company wishes to clarify that, while the establishment of its Hong Kong subsidiary is an important strategic initiative, the project remains in the early planning and development phase. The Company is currently in discussions with various stakeholders to determine the optimal operational and organizational structure for its presence in Asia. Accordingly, the Company has not finalized decisions regarding team composition, roles, or leadership. The office is not yet operational and is not expected to be fully functional until the end of 2025. The Company has not finalized a budget or financial projections, and to date, no material expenditures have been incurred. The funding requirements for the company will be assessed once the operational plan is established. About Metavista3DMetavista3D Inc., through its wholly owned subsidiary psHolix AG, is developing AI-driven, pseudo-holographic display technologies aimed at enabling glasses-free 3D visualization of spatial content.
