Mumbai police to shortly have digital ID cards
Mumbai, May 30 (UNI) Mumbai police will shortly get digital ID cards after the state government has approved its chief's proposal to issue secure and technology-enabled ID cards to all officers and personnel in the city force, a top officer of the police said here on Friday.
He said that in recent times, cases of fraud using counterfeit IDs, especially in the digital arrest scam, have seen a significant rise, and the issuance of digital IDs will curb crimes involving fake police IDs and address national security concerns.
A budget of Rs 4 crore has been allotted for issuing digital smart identity cards for 51,308 sanctioned posts. This makes the Mumbai police the first government department in India to implement such an initiative for the entire staff.
A government resolution to this effect was issued on Thursday. Given the sensitivity of the project, the home department has also permitted the police commissioner to follow a closed tender process for procurement.
Currently, the Mumbai police personnel use printed ID cards, which can be easily duplicated using desktop publishing tools.

Retired army colonel duped of Rs 41 lakh in digital gold scam; two arrested with alleged Chinese links
NEW DELHI: Two men running a cyber fraud network with alleged links to Chinese nationals have been arrested for cheating a retired Army colonel of Rs 41.45 lakh through a fake digital gold trading scheme, Delhi Police said on Saturday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The accused, Indra Kumar Sahani (36) and Rahim Khan (24), were operating out of Ahmedabad and used a sophisticated setup involving mule bank accounts, SIM cards, and cryptocurrency transfers to move the scammed money overseas. Fake platform, big returns, and a Rs 31 lakh 'tax' The case came to light when the victim, a retired colonel from Vasant Kunj, approached police after realizing he had been conned. He was contacted on social media and lured into investing in a fake online trading platform that promised high returns on digital gold traded in dollars. After an initial investment, his fake account showed rapid profits. Encouraged, he kept depositing money, eventually transferring Rs 41.45 lakh, believing his earnings had grown to Rs 1 crore. But when he tried to withdraw, the platform demanded another Rs 31.5 lakh as 'taxes' before releasing the funds. That's when he suspected fraud. Network traced to Ahmedabad Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Surendra Choudhary said Khan was in contact with Chinese handlers through a messaging app and coordinated with account holders from across India. These individuals were brought to hotel rooms in Ahmedabad, where Khan ran the fraud operation. He would install specific apps on mobile devices linked to SIMs registered with the mule accounts. These apps gave foreign scammers remote access to carry out fund transfers, police said. The fraud proceeds were converted into USDT (a cryptocurrency) and moved abroad, helping evade Indian enforcement agencies. Two arrests, phones seized Police traced the digital trail to Ahmedabad and conducted a raid at a hotel, arresting Sahani. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Three smartphones with incriminating material were recovered. Based on his interrogation, Khan was arrested and two more phones were seized. Police said Sahani initially opened a personal bank account but eventually opened nine current accounts and sold access to them to the racket in exchange for commission. The arrests, police said, have helped expose a wider cyber fraud network with transnational links. An investigation is on to identify more victims and collaborators.

Hyderabad registers home sales worth Rs 4000+ crore in April'25: Knight Frank India report
Hyderabad, May 31 (UNI) Hyderabad saw a downward revision of 12 percent year-on-year (YoY) despite the cumulative value of homes registered in April '25 remaining firmly above the Rs 4,000 crore value, according to the latest residential property registrations report released by Knight Frank India. While a slight marginal 4 percent dip was also recorded in the value of the properties registered in April 2025, registrations of homes priced above Rs 1 crore grew by 2 percent YoY, accounting for 20 percent of total registrations in April 2025, up from 17 percent last year, the report revealed. This signals a continued trend in preference for premium homes across the Hyderabad region, which includes Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Rangareddy, and Sangareddy districts. The Rs 1+ crore category, while remaining the smallest by volume at 20 percent, contributed 51 percent to the total value of registrations in April'25. Upon analysis, it was noted that there has been a shift in the average prices in this category by almost 11 percent. The cumulative value of homes in Rs 1+ crore increased by 14 percent YoY compared with April 2024. Majority of the registered properties in Hyderabad were concentrated in the range of 1,000 to 2,000 square feet (sq ft), accounting for 67 percent of all registrations, the report stated. Units sized >2,000 sq ft accounted for 18 per cent of the total registrations as compared with the 15 per cent registered during April 2024. At the district level, Rangareddy accounted for 48 percent of property registrations, followed by Medchal-Malkajgiri (36%). Hyderabad district contributed the remaining 15 percent of total registrations. The weighted average price of transacted residential properties witnessed a YoY increase of 6 percent during April 2025. Among the districts, Rangareddy experienced the most increase of 9 percent YoY. Beyond the concentration of bulk transactions, homebuyers also purchased plush properties that are larger and offer superior amenities. The top five deals in April 2025 involved properties valued above Rs 7 crore. Three of these transactions were recorded in West Hyderabad, while two were in Central Hyderabad. Shishir Baijal, Chairman and Managing Director, Knight Frank India said, 'Hyderabad's residential market recorded a marginal decline in monthly sales volume in April 2025, reflecting a short-term moderation in transaction the sustained demand for premium homes—especially those priced above Rs 1 crore, which now contribute significantly to overall registration value—continues to demonstrate the market's underlying strength. This evolving buyer preference toward larger, higher-value homes indicates growing confidence in Hyderabad's long-term liveability and economic potential'. UNI KNR BD

After Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party MLA Abbas Ansari was sentenced to two years of imprisonment in connection with the hate speech case of 2022, Ansari's legal counsel, Advocate Daroga Singh, on Saturday, expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict and said that they will approach the higher court against the verdict. Speaking to the media after the verdict was announced, Chief Judicial Magistrate (MP-MLA) court in Mau district on Saturday, Advocate Daroga Singh said, "While the trial was established, there was a sentence of only six months. Later, after discussing this with the police, it was increased to several sections, and now he has been sentenced to 2 years of imprisonment... We will file an appeal against the order..." Meanwhile, Joint Director Prosecution Chandrakesh Rai said, "... The court has sentenced the MLA to two years' imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 11,000. The accusations were under sections 153(A) and 171(F). If someone is convicted under these sections, then it is not just a 2-year imprisonment, the membership of the Legislative Assembly can also be taken away..." Abbas Ansari is the son of the dead mafia Mukhtar Ansari. Apart from this, Abbas Ansari's close aide, Mansoor Ansari, was also sentenced to six months of imprisonment. Ansari was booked for delivering a provocative speech against the Mau district administration while the model code of conduct was in place. Earlier, the Allahabad High Court refused anticipatory bail to him in the same case. He approached the top court against the High Court's December 2023 order. On December 19, 2023, the High Court rejected the anticipatory bail application of Ansari and said that, looking at the facts and circumstances of the case, the offence was made out. The FIR was lodged in March 2022 at Kotwali police station in Mau district against Abbas Ansari, Umar Ansari, and others. It was alleged in the FIR that on March 3, 2022, at Pahadpura ground, Abbas Ansari, Umar Ansari, and organiser Mansoor Ahmad Ansari in a public meeting called for settling a score with the Mau administration. Abbas Ansari fought and won on a ticket from the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), the then alliance partner of the Samajwadi Party, in the 2022 state assembly elections from the Sadar seat in Mau.
