#SHOWBIZ: Amir of Ukays victim of Hajj fraud, lodges police report
KUALA LUMPUR: Singer Amir, from the legendary Malaysian pop-rock band UK's, has spoken of his deep disappointment after becoming a victim of alleged fraud by a company that had offered to sponsor his Hajj pilgrimage.
Amir, whose full name is Mohd Azmir Muhammad Yusof, 56, expressed his sorrow, saying that after a long wait to fulfil the Hajj, it had ended in sadness.
He added that despite all his efforts coming to nothing after being deceived by those involved, he and his wife, Sarimah Ahmad, 51, still accepted the unfortunate turn of events.
The renowned singer of 'Di sana Menanti Di Sini Menunggu' was scheduled to depart for the holy land on June 1 with 77 other pilgrims.
He has now left the matter entirely to the authorities for investigation.
He also noted that the fraud case was already on the authorities' radar after a report was filed by the affected congregation.
"I was supposed to fly to Jeddah via Singapore Airlines last Sunday with my wife and other pilgrims after receiving sponsorship from a company," Amir explained.
"However, I have not yet departed for the holy land as it became clear that my flight visa had not been approved.
"Now, this has become a police case concerning the fraud. I have lodged a police report at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
"So, let the police investigate the case in more detail so we can uncover the truth.
"Honestly, I had such high hopes of performing the fifth pillar of Islam after all the preparations had been made," said Amir, visibly emotional when contacted.
Previously, Amir had expressed immense gratitude that his long-cherished dream of performing the Hajj with his wife was finally to be fulfilled after securing sponsorship.
The singer, who has released six albums featuring 60 songs, had even shed tears of joy when his and his wife's names were included among thousands of pilgrims approved for the holy journey.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, Supreme Commander General Songwit Noonpakdee, National Security Council Chief Chatchai Bangchuad, and the military's commanders-in-chief. On May 28, Thai and Cambodian troops were involved in a brief gunfight in Thailand's north-eastern Ubon Ratchathani province and Cambodia's northern Preah Vihear province, where one Cambodian soldier was reportedly killed. Cambodia has since announced its intention to bring the border dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Meanwhile, the two neighbours have agreed to discuss the issue through the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), scheduled to meet in Phnom Penh on 14 June.

Surge in foreign tourists visiting S'gor in lead-up to VSY 2025

SELANGOR is experiencing a shift in its tourism landscape as international visitors begin to form a larger part of the state's tourist arrivals. According to state local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim, the ratio of international to domestic tourists was previously 30:70. 'But by 2024, we successfully broke that pattern. 'Now, international tourists make up a larger share of visitors. 'This a positive sign for Selangor's growing global appeal,' he said. Ng said that while the momentum was encouraging, Sekinchan faced one major hurdle – the lack of four-star hotels for the rising number of higher-spending tourists. He was speaking to reporters at Sekinchan Padi Field Festival 2025 in the Sabak Bernam district. The state government had aimed to draw some 13,000 visitors to the two-day event. Held at Terminal Sekinchan, the festival was the first of its kind in Malaysia and had been held in support of Visit Selangor Year (VSY) 2025. 'This festival was created to let visitors enjoy the beauty of agro-tourism in northern Selangor, a region that produces the most rice in Malaysia and is rich in natural beauty that you can't find in modern cities,' said Ng. The second day offered even more attractions, which included a padi field run, free health screenings and environmental volunteer activities. The festival was part of the VSY2025 campaign that aimed to draw 8 million visitors and generate RM11.7bil in tourism- related transactions. To support these goals, the Selangor Budget 2025 has allocated RM8mil for VSY2025 preparations. These include programming and upgrading tourism facilities across all nine districts. In the works are over 100 programmes and initiatives covering educational tourism, sports, food and beverage, arts, culture and heritage. Also present during the festival press conference were Menteri Besar Incorporated chief executive officer Saipolyazan M. Yusop and Tourism Selangor chief executive officer Chua Yee Ling.

Spotlight on leadership at hospitality festival
Participants were treated to a dynamic events line-up that included keynote addresses, expert panels, workshops and group chats. OVER 120 hospitality professionals from South-East Asia, Japan and China met in George Town, Penang, to be a part of global growth in the sector. They attended the three-day Ascott Learning Festival 2025 held at Ascott Gurney Penang, which was designed to foster leadership, innovation and professional growth.
