Wyoming ranch where acclaimed writer penned the great American novel goes for sale at $29 million
Set against the stunning backdrop of Wyoming 's Bighorn Mountains, a storied ranch where Ernest Hemingway penned one of the cornerstones of American literature has been listed for $29 million.
The historic Spear Ranch, which dates back to the 1800s, is celebrated for its tranquil seclusion, breathtaking vistas and deep ties to both literary and Western heritage.
'The Spear Ranch isn't just land; it's a direct link to the titans of the West, from the pioneering Spear family to literary giants like Hemingway,' Peter Widener, a partner at Hall and Hall, the firm behind the multimillion-dollar listing, told Mansion Global.
'It's where history was made and where new legacies will be forged. To find a property with this level of historical significance, combined with such impeccable modern amenities and natural beauty, is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.'
Spanning over 300 acres of pristine landscape, the estate includes a 7,500-square-foot New England–style main residence, multiple guest cabins and a collection of rustic outbuildings.
The architecture blends classic Western charm with modern luxury, showcasing the ranch's illustrious past.
Just a short distance away lies the Spear-O-Wigwam Ranch, a well-known guest retreat where Hemingway sought solitude to complete his work.
In the summer of 1928, he escaped the distractions of city life and settled into a modest log cabin beside a rushing stream to focus on his writing.
'He went there for the Western experience - to write in peace and quiet,' Widener said.
It was in that peaceful setting that Hemingway completed the first draft of A Farewell to Arms, his semi-autobiographical novel set during World War I.
Serialized in Scribner's the following year, the book brought Hemingway international acclaim and helped solidify his legacy in American literary history.
Today, the Spear Ranch reflects its rich history while offering a luxurious lifestyle.
The centerpiece of the property is the eight-bedroom main residence, outfitted with natural oak flooring.
A formal dining room with a gas fireplace sits just off the kitchen, which features granite countertops and top-of-the-line appliances, according to the listing.
Many of the bedrooms include their own fireplaces, private baths, and spacious closets. A screened gazebo overlooks Little Goose Creek, an outstanding trout fishery which meanders through the property.
'That pond was the Spear family's swimming pool,' Widener noted. 'The current owners spent three or four years restoring the cabin. You don't sleep there - it's just an open room with a big deck over the water.'
Next to the main house is a two-bedroom caretaker's residence, while two additional guest homes sit farther out.
Each guest house features at least two bedrooms and includes a four-car garage.
Other highlights include an equestrian barn, a large event barn and a 3,200-square-foot shop with a bathroom for storing ranch equipment.
Beyond its Hemingway connection, the ranch offers a lifestyle steeped in natural beauty and tradition. Miles of trails throughout the ranch have been covered in wood chips and a small gauge target range provides a unique recreational amenity, according to Cowboy State Daily.
Located just 1.5 miles from the town of Big Horn and 15 miles from the larger city of Sheridan, the ranch is close to other luxury properties and cultural landmarks like the Brinton Museum, known for its impressive Native American art collection.
According to Widener, the property had previously been split into parcels and sold separately over the years, but the current owners made it their mission to reunite the original ranch.
They began by acquiring the historic main house, which came with 56 acres, and gradually purchased adjacent parcels until they restored the full 300-acre estate - plus an additional 70-acre field.
'It's so rare. In our business, we love working with buyers who are putting ranches back together,' Widener said. 'It's really fun to be a part of making history come back to life, as opposed to splitting ranches up, which we try not to partake in.'
For those seeking to own a truly one-of-a-kind piece of American literary and Western history, the Spear Ranch offers a rare blend of natural splendor, historical importance and country living.
As the listing notes, it's 'a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a piece of literary and Western heritage.'

As influencers drop thousands on Hamptons getaways, here are the hot spots that are worth the hype
Ah, Montauk. Once a haven for eccentric fishermen, the coastal town known lovingly as The End of the World has become a place to see and be seen among the influencer set. While some insist Montauk is NOT the Hamptons (even if the maps say otherwise), the evolution of the place is undeniable, as evidenced by the brand new Bagatelle beach club that popped up just days ago on its shores, adding Montauk to the ranks of Courchevel, St. Barths, and St. Tropez. The 'out east' lore has become a siren song to over-worked city dwellers longing for a for a beachy getaway that is only a Hampton Jitney bus ride away. Social media influencers clad in breezy Zimmermann linen sets smile over glasses of rosé and $97 lobster cobb salads, hinting at an idyllic slice of coastal joy that is so close you can taste it - if you happen to have a few thousand dollars to spare. Should you embark on a journey to The End, it is imperative that you have a plan to maximize your hard earned money and time away from work. Where to stay The decision of where to rest your head is perhaps the most important choice in shaping your stay out east. Will you wake up to the sounds of the ocean, or will you wake up in a stranger's childhood bedroom that was converted into a vacation rental? While some say that a shared house is the ideal way to enjoy the Hamptons, the fact is, most share houses are situated in residential neighborhoods that are not necessarily near a beach. Driving to the beach also poses a challenge, as parking passes are often required (and in short supply). Many of these homes also do not have a pool - and the ones that do are not much cheaper than a hotel. To ensure that your beach vacation actually includes a beach, smart travelers may consider a stay at Marram Montauk - one of the few hotels that sits along the water rather than further inland. To celebrate its fifth anniversary, the hotel provided Daily Mail with a look at its luxurious offerings - including ocean front rooms, daily yoga, world class surf instruction, and top notch food from Mostrador, the in-house restaurant. Each guest room is luxuriously appointed with high thread count linens by Frette and indulgent soaps by high-end parfumier Le Labo. Views from the oceanfront suites are unmatched. Sip coffee on your balcony and watch the surfers ride the legendary Montauk waves - or try your hand on a board with a lesson from the famous Engstrom family, who operate a surf shack on the premises. Room rates at Marram start as low as $207 per night during the month of June, but can soar to as much as $1515 per night during the high season in August. Plan ahead to get the best prices. Where to eat One of the most charming aspects of a stay in the Hamptons is that breakfast is deeply engrained in the culture. A fluffy pastry and an iced coffee are essential to starting the day off right. Mostrador makes all of its pastries in-house, making it a must-visit destination in the area, specifically for its Medialunas - Argentinian croissants - which sell out every morning. At lunch time, did at the hotel or make your way over to Duryea's - a seafood restaurant with stunning views of the water. The restaurant has gone viral for its $97 lobster cobb salad, which I grudgingly admit is worth every penny. The massive bowl of lettuce, bacon, and seafood is enough to feed an army, so be sure to bring at least four people to enjoy it with (and to split the bill). Come for the food, stay for the atmosphere, which will have you questioning whether you are still in New York. For snacks, Round Swamp Farm is a must-visit, even if only to say that you went. Round Swamp is a high-end grocery store which has been erroneously accused of selling $40 chicken tenders. They are actually $22.99, and while that is still not cheap, it is not far off from the rising price of food at major restaurant chains. As for the taste, while the tenders are perfectly crispy and juicy, they are lacking in flavor. If you are seeking the best chicken of your life, you are better off visiting an actual restaurant. However, Round Swamp's baked goods and produce are another story. Pick a ripe peach and a bag of Campfire Cookies (priced at $12.99). For dinner, head over to The Grill at Ruschmeyers to dine at what can only be described as an elegant summer camp for adults. Indulge in anything from caviar-topped crudo to the restaurant's self-described 'Best Burger in Montauk.' While I have not tasted every burger in Montauk, I can confirm that this one is pretty darn good. Where to go out If morning yoga and surfing lessons haven't worn you out for the day, Montauk has no shortage of nighttime activities - in fact it is arguably the nightlife epicenter out east. While much has been said of the scene at Surf Lodge, (viral videos have documented the daunting task of gaining entry, with some paying up to $500 to get in) 2025 has brought fresh opportunities for party people to get their fix. Celebrated nightclub Gospel NYC is having a summer pop-up inside Ruschmeyer's, offering guests the opportunity to rage all night before crashing in a luxe cabin, stocked with sumptuous Byredo soaps. For those traveling with families, or who simply have no desire to party, Marram offers a truly glorious beachside bonfire, complete with s'mores. After a jam-packed weekend, a spa day is crucial. Head to Naturopathica spa in East Hampton (there is another location soon to follow at Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton. Treat yourself to a facial followed by some shopping on Main Street before heading back home to the grind of work.

Meghan Markle plans to add hotels & restaurants to business empire as she trademarks ‘As Ever' brand for ‘hospitality'
THE Duchess of Sussex is adding hotels and restaurants to her brand wish list as she goes on a social media charm offensive to win new fans. Ex-actress Meghan is trademarking her lifestyle firm As Ever for 'hospitality services'. 6 6 6 It will include places to stay, 'provision of food and drink' and temporary lodgings. The 43-year-old could serve some of her own food creations — including recipes flaunted on her Netflix series With Love, Meghan. Experts say it shows her ambition to move forward and focus on the future, while husband Prince Harry, 40, seems stuck reflecting on the past. She has spent the year rebranding herself away from runaway royal to a lifestyle, entertaining and star hostess. Brand experts said hotels and restaurants fit in with her lifestyle business image. In the first episode of her eight-part TV series in March, Meghan said: 'When I have someone stay, one of my favourite things to do is prep the guest room.' A second series has already been filmed and will be released in the autumn. "Created by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, As Ever welcomes you to a collection of products, each inspired by her long-lasting love of cooking, entertaining and hostessing.' On Saturday, her As Ever page posted a new picture of her running through the sea in a white dress. Meghan shares rare video and pictures of Lilibet's 4th birthday celebrations at Disney It was captioned: 'So excited for all the good to come! 'Running into the weekend like', with an ocean wave emoji added. She has also been increasingly active on Instagram after relaunching her personal account on New Year's Day. Last week, she shared an 80-second video of her twerking in hospital in a bid to induce labour when she was pregnant and overdue with Lilibet. Her new products are marketed at Americans and not the UK It attracted criticism in Britain for being vulgar. But a source said: 'Meghan is very pleased with the video. 'In the UK everyone's reaction has been a bit prudish but everywhere else, particularly in America and especially with young people, it's been a huge hit. 'CALIFORNIAN ROYALTY' 'Her new products are marketed at Americans and not the UK.' Meghan has also posted videos of her family at Disneyland, bee-keeping with daughter Lilibet, and going to a Beyonce concert with Harry. Her As Ever Instagram page launched in February. Posts include pictures of her gardening, preparing fresh fruit and baking. PR and branding expert Jack Izzard, of Gallia Communications, said of her trademark application: 'In terms of positioning, it's not a million miles from where As Ever is. "She is very much positioning herself as a star hostess, Californian royalty who makes her guests feel welcome. 6 'The issue she's potentially going to have is that's a completely different skill set, running a hospitality business. 'A night in an As Ever B&B will be several hundred pounds. "That's really going to blow up if it's bad.' Mr Izzard said her recent activities are 'all about her reclaiming her voice' and building her brand. He added: 'She always intimated she was stifled by life in the Royal Family. "She's got to earn a living. It's very much 'I'm this Californian hostess now'. 'Harry's still stuck in the past and trying to settle scores. "She is looking ahead, forging this brand.' Representatives for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were approached for comment. 6 6 WIll's heartbreak By Ed Southgate THE Prince of Wales said watching humans destroy our oceans was 'simply heartbreaking' as he urged world leaders to act by thinking big yesterday. William's call came in a speech to the Blue Economy and Finance Forum on ocean preservation at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco after meeting France's President Emmanuel Macron. The prince, whose opening and closing remarks were in French, said those attending were 'united by our deep connection to the ocean and our concern for its safety'. William, in navy suit with a recycled sustainable tie from Wilmok, said the clock was ticking on meeting the target agreed at the 2022 UN Biodiversity Summit aiming to protect at least 30 per cent of the world's land and sea by 2030. Speaking at the heads of state and government session on the forum's final day, the prince added: 'Watching human activity reduce beautiful sea forests to barren deserts at the base of our oceans is simply heartbreaking. 'For the future of our planet, for the future generations, we must listen to the words of Sir David Attenborough: 'If we save the sea, we save our world'. 'I call on all of you to think big in your actions.' World leaders were greeted by a blue carpet as they arrived at the event, with William chatting with Mr Macron and other dignitaries. Addressing an audience of 1,800, William said: 'Rising sea temperatures, plastic pollution and overfishing are putting pressure on fragile ecosystems. 'What once seemed an abundant resource is diminishing before our eyes. We all stand to be impacted. And we are all responsible for change — both negative and positive. But there remains time to turn this tide.' Later, William said he went through a range of emotions when he saw Sir David's new Ocean film. He told Enric Sala, who worked on the film: 'I got angry, then sad, then I got frustrated, then I got happy.'
