Fifa ready to discuss staging 48-team Club World Cup after lobbying from Europe

Yahooa day ago

Fifa will hold a consultation about expanding the Club World Cup to 48 teams in 2029 if this summer's edition is successful, after lobbying from clubs who failed to qualify for the new $1bn (£740,000) tournament.
The controversial 32-team competition kicks off in the US on Saturday and the winners will receive up to $125.8 (£93.2m) in participation and prize money for playing seven matches, about £25m less than Paris Saint-Germain banked from Uefa for their 17-game Champions League-winning campaign, leading to concerns from clubs who have missed out.

Barcelona, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Milan are among the big clubs with large fanbases who have not qualified and, unless Fifa lifts its cap of 12 European entrants, expansion is the only way to ensure more European competitors.
Next year's men's World Cup and the 2031 Women's World Cup will involve 48 teams for the first time, so expanding the Club World Cup would be consistent with Fifa's new tournament model. Fifa sources said that although serious discussions regarding expansion had yet to take place, talks with all stakeholders about the Club World Cup's future format and structure would be held after this summer's tournament.
Another possible change being pushed by Premier League clubs is increasing the cap of two clubs from one country, a restriction that led to Liverpool missing out despite meeting one of the qualifying criteria of having one of the best eight Champions League records of clubs who did not win the competition between 2021 and 2024. Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid qualified as Champions League winners during that period, with nine European clubs qualifying through Uefa rankings because Madrid won the competition twice, in 2022 and 2024.

Fifa has waived the two-per-country limit for clubs that won their continental competition in that period, leading to Brazil having four clubs from four successive Copa Libertadores victories.
The USA have three clubs taking part after Los Angeles FC beat the Mexican side Club América in a playoff triggered by the expulsion of Club León for a breach of multi-club ownership rules.
In an interview with the Athletic last week Fifa's general secretary, Mattias Grafström, said that all options were open for 2029. 'I think for the future we are very open-minded to look at formats and so on that we will discuss with the clubs and with the confederations,' he said. 'I believe strongly in the future of this competition.'
Expanding the Club World Cup would be well received in particular by European clubs, whose commercial strength and global popularity are not reflected in this year's entry list. A bigger tournament involving more of the bigger European clubs would also suit Fifa, which initially struggled to sell commercial deals for this summer's competition.

Dazn eventually agreed to pay $1bn for global TV rights in a deal which allows it to sublicense to other broadcasters on a regional basis, with Channel 5 buying the rights for 23 matches in the UK.
The Dazn deal is being funded by a 10% investment in the company by Saudi Arabia's SURJ Sports Investment, and Saudi money is underpinning the tournament, with the country's Public Investment Fund announced as tournament partners last week. The longtime Fifa sponsors Adidas, Coca-Cola and Visa have also come on board after initially resisting. Ticket sales have been mixed, however.
Expansion would be resisted by the international players' union Fifpro, which alongside the lobby group European Leagues has filed a legal complaint to the European Commission accusing Fifa of 'abuse of dominance' for allegedly failing to consult them over the scheduling of the tournament. Fifa has denied the allegations and accused some leagues of 'commercial self-interest' and 'hypocrisy'. The European Commission has yet to decide whether to investigate the complaint.

German football player Leroy Sane arrives at the airport in Istanbul and is greeted by fans. The forward is set to travel to the Club World Cup with Bayern Munich before his contract runs out on June 30, Sky reported. "After 5 intense years here in Munich, I've decided to start a new chapter in the upcoming season," Sané wrote on X. "I'm incredibly proud to have worn the jersey of the best and biggest club in Germany for over 200 matches and will always cherish the titles we've won together." The player was warmly welcomed by hundreds of Galatasaray fans in Istanbul, where he is set to earn a guaranteed €9 million ($10.4 million) per year net before bonuses. When we played against Galatasaray with Bayern two years ago, we struggled enormously," said Sané. "Of course I want to become champions here again and cause a surprise or two in the Champions League." Amid cheers from awaiting fans, Sané added: "It's already loud here, so I can't wait to have my first game at home in front of the fans." Sané joined Bayern from City in 2020 on a €50 million ($57.1 million) transfer. "Thank you to the club, the coaching staff, everyone behind the scenes, my teammates, and especially you, the fans, for the time we've shared and the memories we've made," he said in his X message. However, his final game for the club may still lie ahead, as Bayern face three group games and a potential round of 16 clash in the US-based Club World Cup before his contract runs out.

Valmet Automotive completes expansion of Zary plant in Poland

Valmet Automotive has completed the expansion of its manufacturing facility in Zary, Poland, enhancing its capabilities in vehicle contract manufacturing and battery systems. According to the company, the construction of extended high-tech manufacturing and logistics facilities has been completed. The Zary plant is a key site for the production of convertible roof systems and kinematic components, including electric vehicle charging flaps and active spoilers. The expansion project commenced in January 2025 and was developed by Panattoni, a global industrial real estate developer. Valmet Automotive's roof and kinematic systems senior vice president Remigiusz Grześkowiak said: 'This investment marks an important step in our European expansion. Our plant is reaching a higher level, and we will significantly increase production capacity, but also contribute to local economic development and create over 300 new jobs.' The extension adds 8,800m2 to the existing plant, bringing the total production area to over 26,000m2, designed to accommodate increasing customer demands. The upgraded facilities include additional production and logistics space, as well as social and administrative areas, all tailored to meet Valmet Automotive's specific operational needs. The flexible layout of the plant allows for quick adjustments to future production and logistics requirements. Valmet Automotive CEO Pasi Rannus said: 'The company's Zary plant is a locally important technology company and employer. Kostoulas guided by NBA superstar's mentor

Greek agent Giorgos Panou is credited with launching the career of superstar Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo and is now doing the same in football with Brighton's soon-to-be new striker Charalampos Kostoulas. Just as he spotted Antetokounmpo, then a second division Greek basketball player in 2013, he spotted Kostoulas, nicknamed "Babis", aged 15. Advertisement He is now on the verge of a record breaking £29.78m transfer to Brighton and when asked how the two talents compare, Panou replied: "I felt the same way when I first say Babis playing three years ago in an under-19s game, aged 15, to how I felt when I first saw Giannis. "I got the feeling immediately that he is cold-blooded, immense talent, with great body language and ready to take on older, bigger guys without feeling pressure. I saw a potential to grow." Chelsea have been credited with interest in Kostoulas in the past while Brighton are believed to have beaten some of the biggest clubs in Germany to his signature. So why move to the south coast? The answer is, perhaps, unsurprising. "They won the family and myself with how the talk, negotiate, give all the tools to thrive and have a good track record of developing similar young talents," Panou added. "So we feel very comfortable, and we think I'm really sure that Babis will adapt really fast in this environment. It was a no brainer for me." Advertisement The former Greek basketball national team assistant coach, now brokering deals across two sports, believes this is a golden era of Greek football with Stefanos Tzimas also joining Brighton from Nurnberg this summer, and PAOK star Giannis Konstantelias expected soon to move to a top five European league club.
