Why Taylor Swift's catalogue win is a masterclass in business
Taylor Swift emerged triumphant after a years-long battle over the rights to her earlier music on the weekend. She now has complete control from the songs to packaging to distribution – and no corporate edicts to deal with.
That would be enough cause for celebration, but reports say that she bought her catalogue for more than $US300 million ($464 million). For a Grammy award-winning, multi-platinum international superstar worth $US1.6 billion, that's pretty much a steal.

Miley Cyrus takes stab at Aussie ex-husband Liam Hemsworth at album signing, fan shares images
Miley Cyrus has thrown some very obvious shade at ex-husband Liam Hemsworth using just three words at a meet and greet with fans. During the event, the 32-year-old Hannah Montana star met a fan who shared the same first name as her former spouse. As she signed a copy of her new album, Something Beautiful, Miley wrote a playful message: 'The Best Liam.' The fan, delighted by the moment, posted a photo with Cyrus and captioned it: 'me when I'm 'The Best Liam.'' The autograph quickly caught attention online. Cyrus and Hemsworth's relationship began on the set of the 2010 film The Last Song and spanned a decade, including a secret wedding in December 2018. Their marriage ended less than a year later, with Hemsworth filing for divorce, citing 'irreconcilable differences.' Their split was finalised in January 2020. Since then, Miley has been in a relationship with drummer Maxx Morando, while Hemsworth has dated model Gabriella Brooks since late 2019. Since their breakup, Liam has kept a relatively low profile and rarely comments on Miley or their past. Despite Miley's public remarks, Liam has never publicly retaliated or spoken negatively about her. The pointed autograph is just the latest in a series of public moments where Miley has seemingly taken aim at Liam. Her Grammy-winning hit 'Flowers' sparked massive controversy when it was released on Liam's birthday on January 13, 2023, with fans dissecting the lyrics for references to their breakup and even rumours of infidelity. The lyrics appear to reference their shared Malibu home that burned down in the 2018 wildfires, as well as themes of independence and moving on after their breakup. In a recent interview on The Zane Lowe Show, Miley opened up about a health scare, sharing, 'I had a medical emergency – I had an ovarian cyst rupture – we didn't know exactly what was going on so we did it.' She added, 'It was pretty traumatic because it was extremely excruciating and I did the show anyway.' Cyrus also discussed her decade-long sobriety, saying, 'I need it. I live for it. It's changed my entire life. I've learned this about myself over the years: sobriety is, like, that's like my God.' Miley is currently promoting her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, which dropped on May 30. The album release is accompanied by a musical movie of the same name, set to hit theaters on June 6.

New image of Taylor Swift sends fans into meltdown
An image of Taylor Swift seemingly appearing in the upcoming Wicked movie sequel has sent fans into a tizz on social media. The photo posted by entertainment site Pop Base showed the singing superstar dressed in character as Dorothy for the highly anticipated second film, Wicked: For Good. 'First look at Dorothy, who will be played by Taylor Swift in 'WICKED: FOR GOOD',' read a tweet from the site's official X account, as they shared a photo of Swift sporting classic braids tied with blue bows and Dorothy's signature checkered blue dress. However, upon closer inspection, the photo of Swift in front of the Yellow Brick Road appears to be an AI-generated image. Still, the image sent shockwaves through X with the thought of the pop star joining Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the sequel. 'OMG, Taylor Swift as Dorothy?! This is HUGE! I'm so excited, I can barely contain myself! That's such a fantastic casting choice,' wrote one fan, as another commented, 'I mean why not? She can do it.' 'OMGG this is why she didn't do the rerecordings of reputation because she's filming Wicked: For Good,' added another, referencing the holdup with Swift re-recording her hit 2017 album Reputation. Yet another user wondered, 'This has the potential to go really good or really bad …' Other fans joined the AI-train by sharing manipulated images of who they thought would be better as Dorothy. One suggested The Substance star Margaret Qualley, while another hilariously put Jack Black up for nomination. The character of Dorothy appeared briefly in the first film, seen walking the Yellow Brick Road in one scene. But director John Chu has teased that Dorothy will make more of an appearance in the upcoming movie, which premieres in Aussie cinemas on November 20 with fans given a first look on Thursday when the new trailer was released. 'Well, we definitely did cast Dorothy. You see her in some of our teasers,' he shared with CinemaBlend recently. 'How much of do you see of Dorothy? I'm going to leave people – I can't confirm or deny how much you see of her. 'I will say that I do think it's important for, whoever Dorothy is to you, to try to respect that as much as possible. But does The Wizard of Oz and our movie intersect in movie two more than ever? 100 per cent.'
