Obesity drug maker Novo Nordisk ousts CEO as competition weighs

COPENHAGEN : Wegovy-maker Novo Nordisk said today its CEO Lars Fruergaard Jorgensen will step down over concerns the company is losing its first-mover advantage in the highly competitive obesity drug market.
Under Jorgensen's leadership, Novo Nordisk became a world leader in the weight-loss drug market, with sky-rocketing sales of its Wegovy and Ozempic treatments which propelled its share price to become Europe's most valuable listed company.
However, its shares have plunged since hitting a record-high in June last year as competition, particularly from US rival Eli Lilly, makes inroads into its market share and as its pipeline of new drugs has failed to impress investors.
'The changes are made in light of the recent market challenges Novo Nordisk has been facing, and the development of the company's share price since mid-2024,' Novo said in a statement.
Eli Lilly's US prescriptions for its Zepbound obesity shot have surpassed Wegovy since mid-March in its biggest market.
'Jorgensen, 58, who has been CEO since 2017, will remain in the role until a new CEO has been appointed,' the company said.
'Former CEO of Novo Nordisk for 16 years and current chair of the Novo Nordisk Foundation, Lars Rebien Sorensen, will join the board as an observer with immediate effect with the aim of taking a seat at the next annual general meeting,' Novo said.
Novo Nordisk is controlled by the Novo Nordisk Foundation through its investment arm which owns 77% of the voting shares.
'Considering the recent market challenges, the share price decline, and the wish from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, the Novo Nordisk Board and Lars Fruergaard Jorgensen have jointly concluded that initiating a CEO succession is in the best interest of the company and its shareholders,' Novo Nordisk said.
Novo Nordisk's share price fell on the news, trading 3% lower by 11.33am after trading 4% higher earlier in the day.
The shares are down 32% year-to-date and 59% from the all-time high in June last year.

Europa League boosts Man United revenue despite Premier League woes

LONDON, June 6 — Manchester United raised their annual core profit forecast on Friday as the club's strong performance in the Europa League drove ticket sales and broadcast revenue. United forecast adjusted core profit of between 180 million pounds (US$244 million) and 190 million pounds for the year ending June, up from an earlier projection of between 145 million and 160 million pounds. Ticket sales jumped more than 50 per cent to 44.5 million pounds in the three months to March as the club had a good run in the Europa League, before losing the finals to Tottenham Hotspur. United had their worst Premier League season since they were relegated in 1974 and hopes of participating in a European competition next season were dashed after they lost the Europa League final. 'We had a difficult season in the Premier League, which we all know fell below our standards and we have a clear expectation of improvement next season,' CEO Omar Berrada said in a statement. United's absence from European competitions, which are lucrative sources of broadcasting revenue, deals a huge blow to the club's future finances and has drawn anger and disappointment from fans worldwide. Jim Ratcliffe, who holds a stake of about 29 per cent in the club and runs their football operations, has taken steps to revive the club's fortunes, including by cutting jobs, raising ticket prices and stopping free lunches at staff canteens. Those benefits are expected to be realised from the first quarter of the new fiscal year starting July, the club said on Friday. United reported a net loss of 2.7 million pounds for the three months ended March 31, compared with a loss of 71.5 million pounds a year earlier. (US$1 = 0.7383 pounds) — Reuters

‘We can achieve great things at Real Madrid' says Alonso

Xabi Alonso has signed a three-year contract until June 2028. (EPA Images pic) MADRID : Xabi Alonso promised a new era for Real Madrid after being unveiled as manager on Monday, confident he can achieve important things as he builds on the legacy left behind by his predecessor Carlo Ancelotti. Alonso was appointed manager on Sunday, returning to the Santiago Bernabeu where he spent six seasons as a player and won several trophies. The 43-year-old had been in charge of Bayer Leverkusen, who he guided to a double last season as they won the German Cup and lifted their first Bundesliga title without losing a game. 'Without a doubt, this is a very special day for me. A day that I will have marked in my calendar for life. I am very happy to be here, in what I feel is my home,' said Alonso, who will begin his tenure on June 1 ahead of the Club World Cup. 'The bond with Madrid has never ceased to exist and, since I entered Valdebebas (training centre) an hour and a half ago, that feeling has been reborn. I have the feeling that this is the beginning of a new era. 'We have a great team, we have fantastic players and a very good potential. That gives me reason to come here with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. We have the conviction that we can achieve important things, worthy of Real Madrid and these European Cups.' New-look real? Asked what style of play he would implement at Real, Alonso told reporters: 'It's a good question and I like it because today's football asks you to be flexible and dynamic. It asks you to know how to move the pieces around. 'I have an idea of how we want to play, but the system can change. I want the team to transmit emotion, energy, to play ambitiously and to connect with the people. 'The symbiosis we are looking for is fundamental for the stage to start well. I like to improve everyone's potential to fit the pieces together.' Lofty standards Alonso takes charge of a Real side who had a sub-par season by their own lofty standards, finishing second in LaLiga behind Barcelona, who also beat them in the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey finals. They were knocked out of the Champions League as holders in the quarter-finals by Arsenal. A key issue Real faced this season was getting the best out of attackers Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr, with both preferring to play on the left wing. 'It's fortunate that we have players of that level. Not just Kylian or Vinicius, but many others,' Alonso said. 'They are differential, they make the difference and we have to get everything out of them. I have ideas. There is still time until we meet with them. But, for me, it's very important to communicate what we want. They are high-level players and that's my task.' Alonso has signed a three-year contract until June 2028 and replaces Ancelotti, who took charge of his last game on Saturday. In his address at the presentation, the Spaniard paid tribute to his former coach. 'Before I start talking about the new era, I don't want to forget to talk about the era that has just ended,' Alonso said. 'Carlo was my coach, a great person and a huge influence. Without his mastery, I probably wouldn't be here. I take over and carry on his legacy with great honour and pride. 'I hope to live up to expectations and be able to take the club to all the places we all believe we can,' he said.
