Luke Donald is the biggest surprise in a PGA Championship filled with them

New York Post15-05-2025

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — There were a number of unlikely names at the top of the PGA Championship leaderboard early in Thursday's opening round at Quail Hollow, but none was more eye-opening than Luke Donald.
Donald, the current European Ryder Cup captain, is 47 years old and only a part-time player these days, with most of his focus on readying for Bethpage Black, where he's hoping to lead Europe to a second consecutive Ryder Cup victory under his watch.
Donald, playing in the first tee time of the day alongside Padraig Harrington and Martin Kaymer and striking the first shot of the tournament, posted a 4-under-par 67.
He entered the week having missed the cut in the last five tournaments in which he's played.

'Obviously, I've been trending with all the five or six missed cuts coming into this week,'' Donald deadpanned afterward. 'Golf's a crazy game.''
Donald's game, other than not being in good form, also didn't figure to be a good fit at Quail Hollow, which maxes out to about 7,700 yards with him being a particularly short hitter.
'It was a pleasant surprise,'' he said. 'It's always fun, bogey-free in a major championship on a course that you wouldn't have thought would be ideal for me. I got off to a really nice, steady start. I hit a bunch of fairways on the front nine which always makes me feel good about my game. I didn't hit a ton of greens today but my putter was really good.
'Obviously very pleased with the score — bogey-free in a major. Someone just told me it was the lowest first round in a major I've had since 2004 or something.''

It was his first bogey-free round in a major championship since 2015 and it tied his lowest career first round in a major (the 2004 PGA).
Donald said he woke up at 4:40 a.m. Thursday and called it 'a nice little honor to hit the first tee shot to get the tournament underway.''
Asked what it's like going to a tournament like this being asked about everyone else's game but his, Donald said, 'That's what I signed up to. I'm here only because I'm captain of the European Ryder Cup Team. I wouldn't be in this field otherwise. It's a nice invitation and a perk that the Ryder Cup Captain gets.
'I understand that my game isn't where it used to be, and that is the focus. So, it really doesn't bother me one bit.''
Donald, who led the Europeans to a Ryder Cup victory in 2023 in Rome, called being a player while handling the responsibilities as the captain a 'balancing thing,'' adding, 'I still love competing. I love being a competitor. But still giving myself plenty of time to be prepared for New York.''
When it was pointed out to him that Keegan Bradley, the U.S. Ryder cup captain, was 3-under par at the time Donald finished his round, Donald joked, 'If (the Ryder Cup) is tied 14-14, are you talking a playoff? I'll grab the trophy and go back to Europe.''
As the defending champion, Europe would retain the Ryder Cup if the matches are tied at the end of the competition.
3 US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley was also off to a quick start at Quail Hollow.

The 38-year-old Bradley, who's ranked 19th in the world, still fancies himself as a player who could qualify on points for the Ryder Cup team he captains.
'Keegan is top 20 in the world, he can have one good week out here, win, which he's very capable of, and he's absolutely in the conversation of being a playing captain,'' Donald said. 'I don't think that's quite in my future. But Keegan is still one of the top players in the world.''

Naples' Noah Kent gets another shot to compete against golf's best at 2025 U.S. Open

It's been an unforgettable three months for Naples amateur golfer Noah Kent, a span that's seen him play in three PGA Tour events, including the Masters. The 20-year-old has gained invaluable experience about the physical and mental tools necessary to play professional golf, a career path he's eager to pursue. Advertisement His next step in that journey starts at the 2025 U.S. Open Golf Championship, which tees off June 12 at the notoriously challenging Oakmont Country Club just outside of Pittsburgh. Noah Kent plays from the bunker on the second green during a practice round of the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club. "The goal is the same, just taking in everything that I can learn," said Kent of his approach to his U.S. Open opportunity. "But I think this time it's also about competing." That's something the University of Florida junior hasn't been able to do at his three previous pro tournament starts, missing the cut by a combined average of more than nine strokes. Rough opening rounds have been the primary culprit, including at Kent's last event, The CJ Cup Byron Nelson in May, where a quadruple-bogey on his third hole torpedoed his chances at qualifying for the weekend. Advertisement "Looking back on it, if I can not make that one big number, I think it's a different outcome," Kent said. "But that's just golf. It's about managing yourself and managing your expectations and not making every shot life or death in the first round." Kent will have a sage and familiar face in his corner at the U.S. Open with Dudley Hart, UF's assistant golf coach, and a two-time PGA Tour winner, serving as his caddie. "He knows my game really well and he knows what it takes to compete at the highest level," Kent said of Hart. "We'll take our chances where we need to take our chances and just make pars." The US Open will likely be the final PGA event Kent plays in this year before hitting the Elite Amateur Series. He'll be at the Northeast Amateur in Rhode Island the day after the U.S. Open concludes. Advertisement No matter how Kent fares at the Open, he said the experience of competing against the greats of professional golf has been amazing. The highlight of course was his time at Augusta, where he played a practice round with eventual 2025 Masters champion Rory McIlroy and competed in a group with World Golf Hall of Famer Bernhard Langer. Mandatory Credit: Kyle Terada-Imagn Images "That was probably the coolest thing ever," Kent said of his Masters start. "I always believed that I was going to play in it one day but to do it as a 20-year-old and check that box off is pretty special. "Being able to do something I want to do for a living a little bit earlier, while I'm still in college, is something I'm very grateful and thankful for. Hopefully, I can use these experiences to lead to a better outcome at Oakmont." 📊 Brazil through, 3️⃣ spots left: the updated qualifiers table

There are only two rounds left of the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup! The five games of the 16th and third-to-last round were played on this Tuesday (10), with two more teams securing their spot in the World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. Advertisement In the first match of the night, Bolivia beat Chile 2-0 and not only kept their hopes of qualifying alive, but also mathematically eliminated the Chileans. Later, Uruguay defeated Venezuela 2-0 and gave an extra "push" to the Brazilian national team, which only needed to beat Paraguay to secure their spot in the 2026 World Cup. At home, Argentina - already qualified and "champion" of the Qualifiers - struggled against Colombia, but managed to draw 1-1. And the Brazilian national team did their job and beat Paraguay 1-0, securing their spot in the 2026 World Cup. Finally, Ecuador, with one less player, held on for a 0-0 draw with Peru, away from home, and also secured their spot in next year's World Cup. Advertisement 📊 Check out the updated Qualifiers table In South America, the top six teams in the standings automatically qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Argentina, Ecuador, and Brazil are mathematically guaranteed a spot. Uruguay and Paraguay are almost there. Even if Venezuela wins their last two games and the two rivals lose, the difference in goal difference is considerable and unlikely to be overcome. Colombia, on the other hand, is on a five-round winless streak and needs to be careful not to miss out on the World Cup. Venezuela and Bolivia are still fighting for a direct spot or, at least, a playoff spot. Advertisement Peru still has mathematical chances of reaching the seventh spot and the playoffs, but the goal difference also works against them in the dispute. 📆 Schedule for the last rounds of the Qualifiers 17th round (09/04) Uruguay x Peru Colombia x Bolivia Brazil x Chile Paraguay x Ecuador Argentina x Venezuela 18th round (09/09) Peru x Paraguay Venezuela x Colombia Bolivia x Brazil Chile x Uruguay Equador x Argentina This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence.
