‘This is what we do:' Good Counsel girls win fourth straight WCAC lacrosse title

Washington Post13-05-2025

Good Counsel girls' lacrosse coach Michael Haight had four points he wanted to emphasize before his team's Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship appearance Monday. Effort, trust and communication were the first three.
The last one he forgot for a second, but quickly remembered it was 'dreams.' The coach wanted his group to be in its opponents' heads.
'We like being in people's nightmares,' Haight said with a smile. 'You see us here every year. You know you're going to get the best that we got come Championship Monday.'
Facing St. John's in the final for a second straight year, the Falcons ambushed the Cadets. Six different Falcons scored a goal in the first six minutes of the game, creating a nightmarish start for the title challengers.
The Falcons coasted to a double-digit lead by halftime and never looked back, earning to their fourth consecutive WCAC title, 14-7, at Georgetown's Cooper Field.
'They get it,' Haight said. 'They shine the brightest when the lights are the brightest. They always have. They all played their role today, and that's really what propelled us.'
When it comes to WCAC competition, the team's seniors will graduate knowing only one thing: winning. The 10 seniors on this roster went four years without a conference loss. The program's last defeat against a WCAC opponent came in 2019.
After an early rough patch where it lost three consecutive games in mid-March, Good Counsel (18-3) closed the season winners of 17 straight. They scored 12 or more goals in 16 of those games. They scored 20-plus goals in six of them.
'We don't look at the past, we only look ahead,' Haight added. "If we fall down, we're going to fall forward. If we can get up, we're going to look up, we're going to go. Those games propelled us to what we are today. They kept grinding."
Five different Falcons scored two goals apiece in the first half against the Cadets (12-8). The Falcons were aggressive on both ends, refusing to shy away from contact on defense. It took a little over 10 minutes for St. John's to find the back of the net and the Cadets had just two goals at halftime.
Good Counsel seniors Carys Volley, Ava Grandi and Dani Serrano, and juniors Ashlyn Gallagher and Annabelle Walsh each had multi-goal games. Walsh led all scorers with four goals.
'We've been playing well as a team,' Walsh said during the postgame celebration. 'When the team plays well, I play well too because we all feed into each other. It feels really good. We really played like a team today and it [helped] me.'
When the final horn sounded, the Good Counsel bench flocked to the goal as the Falcons crowd started to chant 'four-peat.' As Haight and the team posed for a picture with the championship trophy, the coach marked the moment with five simple words.
'This is what we do.'
The program will enter next year with the same target that has been on its back for some time. Haight said he expects to reload and hopes to keep the championship streak alive.
It's something he thinks can be accomplished because of how hungry his players continue to be. They all play club lacrosse, as well as various fall sports before offseason workouts begin in November. By that time, they have an appetite for success.
'Our roster is built on classes not being too dominant," Haight said. 'We know we have a lot of talented kids that didn't necessarily get in today. When they get their chance, they're going to be ready.'

Chelsea sign Strasbourg's Mamadou Sarr on eight-year deal

Chelsea have completed the signing of Mamadou Sarr from Strasbourg on a contract through to 2033. In January, the clubs reached a €14million (£11.9m; $14.4m) agreement for the centre-back to move at the end of the season. The France Under-20 international has been signed in time to be included in Enzo Maresca's squad for the Club World Cup. Ligue 1 club Strasbourg and Chelsea are owned by BlueCo, the multi-club ownership group. Welcome to Chelsea, Mamadou Sarr! 🔵 — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) June 9, 2025 The 19-year-old defender has signed an eight-year deal at Chelsea after making 28 first-team appearances in 2024-25 for Strasbourg, who qualified for next season's Conference League through their seventh-place league finish. Sarr spent six years in the Lens youth academy before spending six seasons at Lyon and spending the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Belgian side RWD Molenbeek. Analysis by Simon Johnson Chelsea rate Sarr highly and always wanted him to join up with the squad as soon as possible. He will be part of the senior group that is going to USA to play at the FIFA World Cup and it gives him an opportunity to learn Enzo Maresca's methods as well as getting to know his new team-mates. Advertisement There are obviously other centre-backs at the club ahead of the 19-year-old in the pecking order. He is still relatively inexperienced and has to adapt to English football. But after considering loaning him back to Strasbourg at one point, Chelsea now look keen to have him involved. The squad will come under greater strain next season now that they are back in the Champions League. While Chelsea have not ruled out buying another centre back this summer, they do not feel under pressure to do so and Sarr is one of the reasons why. (Sathire Kelpa/Eurasia)

Adam Sandler to cast Ravens RB Derrick Henry in movie if he rushes for 2,000 yards in 2025

We've seen plenty of sports stars make movie cameos throughout the years, from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 'Airplane!' to Dan Marino in 'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective' and finally Michael Jordan and a plethora of NBA stars in the iconic 'Space Jam.' And we could see another one soon thanks to a bet between Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry and actor Adam Sandler. Henry, who is a self-professed superfan of Sandler's work, agreed to a wager during an appearance on 'The Dan Patrick Show' where if he reaches 2,000 rushing yards in the 2025 season, Patrick would get the running back in a film alongside Sandler. Henry agreed to the proposal and the veteran sportscaster reached out to his friend Sandler. In response, the 'Uncut Gems' and 'Happy Gilmore' star sent a personal video for Henry which was shown to the 31-year-old at practice. 'Yo, Derrick, I just woke up. You know that, that's why I look disgusting, on top of the fact that I am disgusting, but I love ya. Congrats on everything, baby,' Sandler said to Henry. '2,000-plus (yards) this year not only gets you in a movie, but we'll have a nice dinner together and talk about Dan Patrick's facial hair and how hard it is for him to grow it.I love ya and keep it up.' Henry replied to the video on social media afterwards, saying: 'Dan you're a real one! Adam Sandler is da (GOAT)!! I appreciate the extra motivation!' Henry has already surpassed the 2,000 rushing yards mark in a season before, doing so in 2020 when he ran for 2,027 yards while with the Tennessee Titans. Last season, Henry finished just 79 yards short of 2,000 yards, finishing with 1,921 in his first season with the Baltimore Ravens. He is one of just nine running backs ever to reach the milestone and would become the first ever player to do it twice if he was to do it again. Earlier this offseason, Henry signed a two-year, $30 million contract extension with the Ravens. And despite being one of the older running backs in the league, he says he's not concerned about his age. 'I want to be great,' Henry told. 'No matter how good it is or how bad it is, I'm always focused on me trying to get better each and every day and each and every way I can. I think, for you to be great, you have to focus on being consistent. You got to outwork everybody and that's the approach I have to take. 'I love football. I love playing. I know people look at the age, but I don't really try to focus on that. I just focus on: how can Derrick Henry be better? How can Derrick Henry help the Ravens get to where they want to get to?'
