How Delta Is Reaching New Heights Of Sustainability

The century-old Delta Air Lines company entered Earth Month (April) 2025 in a position of strength.
CEO Ed Bastian had been open with shareholders about the 'broad economic uncertainty around global trade' of late, and why that's caused a slower-growth environment. Nevertheless, Delta remains economically stable. It expects June quarter profitability of $1.5 to $2 billion. As proof of that, Delta, in contrast to airlines affected by supply chain challenges at Boeing, took delivery of more new mainline aircraft in 2024 than any other carrier – 38 planes – because 100% came from Airbus.
The Atlanta-based airline is also expanding its joint venture with LATAM to Argentina. It has been rolling out new cabin interiors – nose-to-tail renovations – across its entire fleet. Meanwhile, its multi-year partnership with the PGA TOUR makes Delta the official airline of the global golf juggernaut.
Strategy refreshment
The most exciting news, however, for Chief Sustainability Officer Amelia DeLuca, a near-20-year veteran of the airline, was the April 1, 2025, launch of Delta's 'refresh strategy.'
'I told my family,' she shared, 'this is like Super Bowl time for us. We're deep in our ESG report work, so this is a busy time of the year. We're blessed that we have so much good stuff just to talk about.'
Delta's refresh is architected around three pillars, DeLuca explains: 'What we fly, how we fly, and the fuel we use' to fly there. The three pillars are expected to support the airline's operational and sustainability strategies through 2050.
Delta's proposed more sustainable, elevated future of travel is based on clear metrics. Its tactics focus on efforts to expand coalitions, leverage existing solutions and tech, and invest in the future of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
'I love the three pillars,' DeLuca says. One can also look at them as 'short, medium, and long-term' goals, or 'what we control, and then obviously, things that we don't control, but we can build partnerships on. All of that is encompassed in them. All backed by data. All driven by the fact that ninety percent of our [company's] impact on the planet comes from jet fuel emissions, but balanced by the fact that we're also a consumer brand. So, we have to make sure that consumers are at the forefront of everything that we do. So everything that we do ladders up to those pillars.'
Says DeLuca, 'No matter who your stakeholder is, they can appreciate an action the company is taking related to one of those pillars.' Delta is consistently focused on consumer experience, where the key measure of its success in sustainability is customer impressions, 'starting with what we fly, which is how a lot of people think about sustainability.'
'That's why we address the 'how we fly' pillar through things beyond carbon emissions. [For example], we look at pain points such as single-use plastics, which can taint an entire travel experience for someone who's trying to travel sustainably.'
'So 'how we fly' is this kind of balance between what our consumers see, but also a lot of things that they don't see, which we don't always get credit for.'
Using less fuel, flying more cool
Not to say emissions reduction alone isn't a big deal. 'We do want to share how much jet fuel we're saving today to operate more efficiently,' says DeLuca. 'And then of course, our fuels of the future, cleaner fuels, are exciting because that involves so many stakeholders, from farmers in rural communities, to state, federal, and global policymakers, to standing up an entirely new value chain in the United States around energy independence.'
In pursuit of such independence, Delta is partnering with JetZero on a revolutionary blended-wing-body aircraft. The low-drag, lightweight, 'all-wing' Z4 uses up to 50% less fuel than today's commercial jets. The plane is so wide that it could support a standard pickleball court in the main body!
'So, all of this is a huge body of exciting work,' says DeLuca. 'And ultimately, we need all of these items in parallel, working towards net zero.'
Delta's been working in earnest on that net-zero mission since 2020, when it committed $1 Billion toward sustainability initiatives, acknowledging the extent to which global airlines contribute to environmental degradation. It wanted to 'take ownership' for its part in that, according to DeLuca:
'No one should have to choose between seeing the world and saving the world.'
At the time, the airline stated that it intended to lead its industry, but now, according to DeLuca, it recognizes that a more practical philosophy has led to its more efficacious 'refresh strategy.'
'With the refresh strategy,' she says, 'we've taken the time over the last couple of years to not only understand what our impacts are, but also how best to tackle them. So if we have a dollar to spend, let's spend it on the best bang for our buck when it comes to carbon abatement. And so those three pillars help show the short, medium, and long-term return that comes from the company investing in this work.'
Never mind the complexity of that work. With 100,000 Delta people working to maintain world-class customer experience on up to 5,000 daily Delta and Delta Connection flights to nearly 300 destinations on six continents, Delta served more than 200 million customers in 2024.
Says DeLuca, 'I've had almost nineteen years at this company, and what I love about Delta is that it does really hard things. Every day, from just running an operation to not laying anyone off during the pandemic, we do hard things here. I'm proud of what we've done today to try to create a more sustainable travel experience, a more efficient operation.'

That's fuel that we can save today through operating procedures, through fleet modifications. It's funded, it's prioritized, and it's supported throughout the organization. Anyone at this company who can touch and influence that work has that built into their business at this point.'

One of the practical pieces of tax advice that I continuously dole out to clients, friends and family members each year is the critical importance of keeping receipts for any deductions or credits you plan to claim on your tax return. While this goes without saying for obvious items such as charitable donations and eligible medical expenses, it's perhaps even more important to keep receipts of other expenses, such as employment or business expenses, that you plan to deduct on your return to lower your final tax bill. Depending on your tax bracket, those receipts can be worth more than 50 cents on the dollar. Consider the self-employed, high-income earning Vancouver-based IT consultant who spent $1,000 in airfare to visit a client in 2025. At her top marginal tax rate of 53.5 per cent, hanging on to that receipt could save her $535 in real hard cash taxes that she otherwise would have to remit to the Canada Revenue Agency by April 30, 2026. That's why I encourage anyone who claims employment or business expenses to carefully track them and keep those receipts. That can be done 'old school,' by physically hanging on to the relevant receipts and filing them in a paper folder for tax season. Alternatively, many of us are now in the habit of taking a picture of the receipt (or scanning it) and saving the receipts in an online 'tax folder', by year, stored virtually in the cloud, so that these receipts are all together in one place come tax time. If you incur substantial business or employment expenses each year, I would go so far as to recommend a separate credit card so that you can easily segregate your work expenses from your personal expenses, especially when it comes to some retail purchases that could be either. For example, was that recent Staples purchase tax-deductible office supplies or a large back-to-school stock-up for the kids? The importance of keeping receipts to justify your expenses came up yet again in a recent decision of the Federal Court of Appeal released late last month. The issue before the appellate court was whether the lower Tax Court erred in disallowing additional deductions for motor vehicle expenses incurred by the taxpayer in connection with his employment. While it was clear that the taxpayer travelled for work and qualified for various employment expense deductions permitted under the Income Tax Act, the Tax Court concluded that the deductions should not be allowed because the taxpayer did not provide sufficient evidence to demonstrate the amount that should be deductible. I first wrote about this case last year, so before reviewing the decision of the appellate court, here's a brief summary of the facts. The taxpayer was appealing reassessments of his 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 taxation years in which the CRA reduced or denied certain expenses claimed in each of those years. The taxpayer, a visiting registered nurse, was simultaneously employed by four separate employers in 2015 and three separate employers in 2016, 2017 and 2018. His job was to provide nursing services to individuals in their own homes or in a retirement or nursing home. During the tax years under review, he provided nursing services six days one week and four days the next week on a rotating basis. Each week included two or three seven-hour night shifts during which he was on standby for patients who required urgent care. The night before each workday, his employers would provide a schedule of the patients he was to visit the following day. The taxpayer estimated he visited between 10 and 30 patients during a day shift, and he worked an average of 40 to 45 hours per week, plus the two to three seven-hour night shifts. Each employer paid the taxpayer a fixed amount for each patient visit, regardless of the nursing services provided. He travelled daily from his south-central Ontario community to visit patients in the Greater Toronto Area. The taxpayer deducted various automobile expenses in each year, which were denied. Under the Income Tax Act, to be able to deduct vehicle expenses as an employee, you must normally be required to work away from your employer's place of business or in different places, and you must be required to pay your own automobile expenses, as certified on Form T2200, Declaration of Conditions of Employment. In addition, you must not be the recipient of a 'non-taxable' allowance for motor vehicle expenses. An allowance is considered non-taxable when it is solely based on a 'reasonable' per-kilometre rate. The taxpayer may have been entitled to claim some of these as valid expenses, but he was unable to supply any evidence to back up the expenses he had claimed. He testified he had previously provided the records to the CRA by registered mail, but the CRA never received them, and he was unable to provide any backup documentation in court. This proved to be fatal for the taxpayer's claim in Tax Court. 'Maintaining books and records is an ongoing obligation in a self-assessing system and the taxpayer's failure to do so … made it impossible for him to meet the evidentiary burden … to demolish the (CRA's) assumptions' about the denied expenses,' the lower court judge wrote, citing a prior case. The taxpayer appealed the Tax Court's decision to the Federal Court of Appeal, which heard the case at the end of May. The three-judge panel of the appellate court considered whether the taxpayer had provided sufficient evidence as to the amount of his expenses to justify a deduction on his return. The taxpayer tried to argue that, notwithstanding having any receipts or backup documentation, he was found to be a 'credible witness' by the Tax Court judge, and thus his testimony as to the amount of expenses he had incurred and claimed on his tax returns should simply be believed. The appellate court disagreed, writing, 'it was not a matter of disbelieving him; it was a matter of the (taxpayer) failing to present sufficient evidence to demonstrate that the amounts claimed were in fact deductible.' But, if you are unable to back up your tax deductions with hard evidence, you are unlikely to be successful in the face of a CRA review. Revenue-wise the company has seen tremendous growth, going from just $15 million in 2020 to $1.7 billion in 2024. Stablecoin issuers make profits by collecting the interest on the assets they hold in reserve to back their stablecoins. Circle said USDC is backed by 'cash, short-dated US Treasuries and overnight US Treasury repurchase agreements with leading global banks.' Advertisement Circle's IPO comes amid a push by the Trump administration and the crypto industry to pass legislation that would regulate how stablecoin issuers operate in the US. A Senate bill There is also growing competition in the stablecoin field. A crypto enterprise partly owned by the Trump family just launched its own stablecoin, USD1. Circle said its long track record and values – the company says its mission statement is 'to raise global economic prosperity through the frictionless exchange of value' – will help it stand apart in the field.

NASCAR Teams 23XI And Front Row Must Qualify On Speed, For Now

The NASCAR charter war took another dramatic turn Thursday as the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ruled in favor of NASCAR, overturning a lower court's decision that temporarily granted 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports the right to compete as chartered teams in 2025. In short: NASCAR wins this round. The two teams that dared to sue the sport they compete in have now lost their guaranteed place in the field—again. According to the ruling, the December 18 decision by a lower court that handed each team three charters for the 2025 season—including one each purchased from the now-defunct Stewart-Haas Racing—has been vacated. That means no automatic starting spots, and no guaranteed slice of NASCAR's multi-billion-dollar media rights pie. Not unless 23XI and Front Row can convince the court to reconsider. The teams have 14 days to petition for a rehearing. Failing that, the judgment becomes final 21 days from now—on June 26, just two days before the Cup Series hits the newly rebranded EchoPark Speedway in Atlanta. A symbolic gut punch? Perhaps. But also a logistical nightmare for two multi-car operations with Daytona-sized ambitions and no guaranteed starting spots. This is only the latest twist in a legal saga that started last October when 23XI and Front Row filed a lawsuit against NASCAR, arguing that they were unfairly shut out of charter ownership despite purchasing charters from Stewart-Haas Racing. When the Dec. 18 ruling gave them the green light, it looked like they'd successfully stuck it to the establishment. But NASCAR quickly appealed that ruling, calling it 'fraught with errors, both legally and factually' in a Feb. 12 brief. When oral arguments were heard on May 9, early indications hinted that the appellate judges were skeptical of the teams' position. That skepticism has now translated into a full reversal. NASCAR's charter system, which functions like a franchise model, guarantees certain teams a spot on the starting grid and a share of media revenue. But the current system also hinges on participation in the NASCAR Charter Agreement. When 23XI and Front Row declined to sign the most recent iteration of that agreement, NASCAR took the position that they had forfeited any charter-related benefits—even for charters they claimed to own. The Dec. 18 ruling temporarily rewrote that narrative. Now, the appellate court has rewritten it again. The decision throws another wrench into 2025 plans for both teams. Without charters, their drivers must qualify on speed each week. Sponsorship deals become trickier. And any illusion of stability in the garage has been vaporized by legal fumes. As it stands, 23XI Racing, co-owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, and Front Row Motorsports, which expanded aggressively by acquiring SHR assets, now find themselves staring at the same uphill legal road they thought they'd already climbed. It's unclear whether they will file for a rehearing or take the fight all the way to the Supreme Court. What is clear: NASCAR has reclaimed the high ground—for now. And with the next round of Charter Agreements expected to shape the sport's financial future for a decade, the battle lines are only getting deeper.
