
From dump to data: How this start-up is fixing India's waste management issue
During their research and survey conducted with an NGO at the dumping ground, they found that the average life expectancy of people residing in the vicinity of the dump site was 37 years. Moreover, the Deonar dumping ground was centrally located in Mumbai. The duo realised that such incidents would begin to impact the entire city soon; at that moment, the idea for the waste management firm ReCircle was born.
'From the Deonar dump site, I think over the next four to five years, Gurashish and I would have visited almost 40 dump sites in different parts of the country, and the situation is as bad as it is in Mumbai. So, that's how our journey began in 2016,' says CEO and Co-founder Nainani.
ReCircle is focused on building a circular future in the country. It has so far diverted more than 169,000 tonnes of waste across more than 310 cities in India, partnering with over 45 processing and more than 400 collection partners. Its key initiatives include ClimaOne (a tech-enabled waste supply chain tracking platform), Plastic EPR Services, and Textile Recovery Facility (TRF). ReCircle has impacted more than 3,500 Safai Saathis and works with over 60 brands, such as Hindustan Unilever and UNDP India.
ReCircle was also the winner of India's Top Innovative MSME of the Year – Small, at the ET MSME Awards 2024.
Waste not, want not
In 2016, the company started with a B2C model but pivoted to B2B in 2018, realising that larger players and producers of plastic packaging must be held accountable for the waste they generate.
ReCircle primarily focuses on the dry waste sector. Its major service includes helping brands like Coca-Cola, Nestlé, and Mondelez—essentially FMCG companies—in achieving plastic neutrality while complying with plastic waste management or the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulation.
The company's ClimaOne platform, which was launched last year, is in an inclusive model where all stakeholders of the waste management supply chain—local scrap dealers, aggregators, and waste management companies—are onboarded. This model includes a collection partner app and a web-based dashboard for the brand owner.
'So, when a brand buys plastic credits from us, they're able to see the entire track and trace of where the material was, who collected it, what the quantity is, what the quality is, and where it has been finally used for recycling itself. Now this data is being used for, of course, their EPR compliance-based reporting, but also they're using it for their SGD (Sustainable Goals Development) reporting globally. So, ClimaOne essentially brings in transparency and traceability in this informal waste management sector,' he said, adding that initially, it was quite difficult to get the collection partners on board because they're largely informal in nature and are not used to working on technology platforms.
ReCircle operates its own collection units in Mumbai, where it handles the collection, sorting, and segregation of materials before selling them to recyclers.
Honey products manufacturer Honey Twigs has been working with ReCircle for the past four years. The company uses food-grade plastic as its primary packaging material, as they could not find an affordable and environmentally friendly packaging solution with a shelf life of 18 months. 'Till the time we don't find such an option, we want to make sure we are discarding our product waste responsibly. For this EPR responsibility, we hired ReCircle, which has helped us neutralise our environmental footprint. They helped us in responsibly discarding our return or unsold stock. The only other option is to hand it over to the municipal corporation, who simply throws it on an open dump. So, having such a partner helps us as a sustainability brand,' says Jigar Mehta, Co-founder, Honey Twigs.
Future
ReCircle is now working on PET flakes, derived from small fragments of PET bottles. These flakes can be recycled and used as raw material for manufacturing various products, including furniture and packaging materials. A pilot is being conducted in North India, with operations set to commence this month.
ReCircle is also working on setting up a recycling infrastructure and collaborating with MSME recyclers who face challenges in upgrading their capacities or achieving the desired quality output.
'So, we're partnering with MSME recyclers where we are going to work with them on a contract basis. This will help them as well as us in scaling up our capacities for recycled content. We have the supply chain in place, and we have the customers in place, and as per the EPR requirement, there's a mandatory requirement for brands to use recycled plastic in their supply chain itself. So that's where we see the demand growing not just in India but globally as well,' says Nainani.
Other than this, ReCircle will be expanding from plastic waste to textile waste, and research is currently going on around it.

A bottle bill deserves to pass the R.I. General Assembly. Here's why beverage brands think so.

(Photo by) Rhode Island has a major opportunity to modernize and reform its recycling system with two common-sense bills currently before the legislature. H6207 sponsored by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee, a South Kingstown Democrat, and S 996, sponsored by Sen. Mark McKenney, a Warwick Democrat, would establish a modern Deposit Return System – a.k.a. 'A bottle bill' – and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging. EPR essentially requires producers of packaging to fund a program for collecting and recycling discarded packaging to help minimize their environmental impact. Together, these proven policies would reduce litter, cut costs for the consumer, and build a cleaner environment. As the legislative debate continues, it's clear that momentum is growing for recycling reform — not just among environmental advocates and local leaders, but within the private sector as well. Environmental champions like Save the Bay and Clean Water Action strongly support these initiatives. And you might be surprised to learn that the beverage industry does too. Many beverage companies see a combined bottle bill and EPR system as a smart, forward-looking solution to address flaws with the way we handle recycling. Rhode Island's recycling rate is stuck at just 26%. In Providence, it's worse — recycling rates hover in the single digits, and nearly 650 pounds of recyclables per household are rejected each year due to contamination. That adds up to over 121,000 tons of collected recyclable material per year that the city pays $1.14 million to dispose of in the Central Landfill in Johnston, which is projected to run out of room in about 20 years. This represents both wasted resources and missed economic opportunity. We can — and must — do better. Leading beverage companies who are part of the Coalition for High Performance Recycling (CHPR) agree. A growing number of beverage companies are publicly endorsing recycling reform in Rhode Island. These companies understand there's a clear business case for the industry to support and fund improved recycling systems. A reliable, domestic supply of recycled materials is essential for both short- and long-term success. Brands can no longer rely on volatile global markets, unstable geopolitics, or imported raw materials to meet their production needs. Companies need a steady, local stream of recycled material — so that each can and bottle can be recycled into new cans and bottles. Who belongs to CHPR ? Primo Brands — whose trusted brands include Poland Spring and Saratoga. Other participating beverage and bottling companies are Diageo North America,whose brands include Guinness and Johnnie Walker New Belgium Brewing Company; Niagara Bottling; and Red Bull. As Primo Brands recently testified at the Rhode Island State House in support of a modern bottle bill and EPR, 'we need a greater supply of recycled materials, and we need it to be domestic.' A growing number of beverage companies are publicly endorsing recycling reform in Rhode Island. These companies understand there's a clear business case for the industry to support and fund improved recycling systems. The current domestic recycling system doesn't get the job done. One reason is that curbside recyclables are lumped into one single, albeit convenient, system. That inevitably leads to contamination, which reduces the value of the recycled products and the ability to turn them into food grade material. Another problem is that people are not sufficiently educated and incentivized to recycle. A modern bottle bill with an extended producer responsibility policy together provides an environmental improvement strategy and improves consumer education and recycling. Plus, they're smart, complementary business strategies that support stable, domestic supply chains that produce higher-quality recycled materials and help keep costs down for the consumer. Rhode Island can become a national model for high-performance recycling. By passing H6207 and S996 — a modern bottle bill plus EPR — the state can significantly reduce litter, pollution, and waste, protect its natural beauty and resources, and create a more circular, resilient, and sustainable economy and environment. Yukon Chamber of Commerce, business call for pause on EPR program
The Yukon Chamber of Commerce wants the Yukon government to hit the brakes on the extended producer responsibility program. The chamber, which recently announced plans to dissolve , wrote a letter to Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai and Minister of Environment Nils Clarke on May 27. The letter calls the extended producer responsibility program 'poorly understood, financially cost-prohibitive, overly complex and administratively expensive, destroying what little profit margin privately-owned Yukon-based businesses have; all at the dawn of a pending global recession.' The extended responsibility program is set to begin this summer across the territory. The program, which was added to the Environment Act in January 2024, puts the responsibility for the collection and recovery of waste with the person who manufactured that waste — i.e., the business or 'steward.' Producer responsibility organizations act on behalf of businesses they've struck agreements with to collect and recover waste. These organizations, according to the Yukon government, lead engagement and communication efforts. According to the Yukon government website for EPR , there are currently four producer responsibility organizations in the territory: Call2Recycle, which focuses on batteries; Interchange Recycling, which takes care of oil, diesel exhaust fluid and antifreeze; Circular Materials, focusing on packaging and paper materials; and Product Care, hazardous and special products. Each organization has its own date to begin implementation of the stewardship plan. Call2Recycle is set to start June 24, Interchange Recycling on Aug. 1, Circular Materials on Nov. 1 and Product Care some point in the fall. The stewardship programs 'must provide reasonable and free access to collection facilities or collection services,' per the 2024 extended producer responsibility regulation legislation. In 2023, YG environmental analyst Natalia Baranova told the News that the government could save 'several millions' of dollars due to the EPR system. An economic analysis prepared for YG , published in 2023, also found that under extended producer responsibility, households, communities and the government would experience cost savings. However, EPR scenarios in the analysis were more costly overall, per the report. But the chamber's letter, signed by chair John Campbell, says that the cost of goods in the Yukon will rise due to the EPR program. 'This 'solution' - the EPR program - does not match viable or realistic Yukoner or program needs considering our small population and distance to market for appropriate recycling, not to mention that it appears as though the EPR is a tariff - a tax by a new name - and that this new YTG Tariff will be passed on to the consumer who will pay into multiple recycling or EPR programs each time the product is warehoused, distributed or consumed,' reads the letter. 'This program will cause financial harm to businesses and to consumers, while misleading Yukoners, operators and consumers that the EPR will make a positive impact in environmental waste diversion.' The letter asks the government to delay the implementation of the program and review the financial implications, and consider 'alternative, realistic models that don't have our small business community and economy bearing sole financial responsibility to divert waste in our territory.' The letter followed a different letter, sent to Clarke on May 21 by Alan Lebedoff, the president of ALX Exploration Services. He calculated that the EPR program would cost his business an extra $100,000 a year. 'Your claim that these costs will not affect consumers ignores basic economics: businesses, classified as 'stewards' under the regulations, will pass these costs to consumers, further driving up the cost of living in an already expensive territory,' wrote Lebedoff. He also asked the government to delay the implementation of the program until December 2026. He also asked that the government conduct a 'transparent, collaborative economic impact assessment with businesses' and engage directly with mining companies and other stakeholders. The Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses, a national non-profit, also wrote to Clarke and Pillai on May 30. They asked that the roll-out be paused until 2026. They also want to see a 'full economic impact analysis, including comparative cost modeling and recession scenario testing.' They also want the government to raise the exemption threshold to include businesses making $2 million in annual revenue (up from $1 million), to treat each franchise location as a separate entity, and have enforcement take an education-first approach for the first year of implementation. They also ask the government to consider 'alternative models' like 'shared municipal-territorial stewardship or limiting the list of prescribed products to ease the transition.' Error!
