Electric atmosphere as crowds gather for Hong Kong's bun scrambling spectacle
About 200 residents and tourists started lining up on Hong Kong's Cheung Chau Island hours before the iconic annual bun-scrambling competition at midnight to ensure they secured a spot to experience 'the adrenaline rush of the athletes' at the scene.

Nine men and three women have made it to the final for this year's contest, which will be held at Pak Tai Temple Playground on the outlying island.
People queued up for tickets outside the fire station near the park at 8.30pm even though ticket distribution did not begin until 10pm.
Ken So Kwok-wah, 53, a security guard, travelled to Cheung Chau the day before and slept on a bench near the playground solely to secure a spot.
'I've been watching the bun scrambling competition every year except during Covid time. It never disappoints as the energy is just out of this world and even spectators can feel the adrenaline rush of the athletes,' he said.

'Coming a day before is just easier as I live in Sau Mau Ping. I don't need to rush with many people today to take a ferry.'

Unregistered, non-fee-paying pilgrims lack access to the full amenities offered during the hajj, including air-conditioned tents, making them particularly vulnerable to heat-related health risks. On Thursday, ice packs were handed to people walking towards Mount Arafat, with some placing the small bags on their heads. With temperatures reaching 42 degrees, officials ushered people away if they spent too long in one place near the bouldered hill, which had fans spraying mist and cool air at its foot. (AFP)

Hong Kong airport's Terminal Two check-in counters set to reopen in March 2026
Check-in counters at Hong Kong International Airport's Terminal Two will reopen as early as March next year, the Airport Authority has announced. Airport Authority Chief Executive Officer Vivian Cheung said on Monday that the renovation work for Terminal Two was largely completed and that around a dozen airlines would be moving their check-in counters from Terminal One to Terminal Two starting in March. They include Hong Kong Express, Hong Kong Airlines, and Greater Bay Airlines, as well as other budget air carriers primarily running short-haul routes to places such as mainland China, Thailand and Japan. But in the first year, after checking in, passengers will still have to take the train to Terminal One to board their flights. The Terminal Two departure hall is expected to open in 2027. Terminal Two has been closed since 2019 due to construction work for the airport's third runway. It previously housed check-in counters mainly for budget airlines. The newly expanded facility – which cost HK$12.9 billion to build – will open in phases. First to start operations will be the terminal's coach hall, with 41 parking spaces for tour buses, cross-border buses, and other vehicles, set for late September. Hong Kong's status as an international aviation hub was hit hard during Covid-19, when strict restrictions brought travel to a halt. Earlier this month, the Airport Authority said passenger traffic marked a 'new post-pandemic high' during the Easter holidays. The airport handled 5.19 million passengers, a year-on-year growth of more than 20 per cent, in April, the authority said.

UFC to hold first event in mainland China since pandemic with Shanghai fight
Ultimate Fighting Championship will hold its first event in mainland China since the Covid-19 pandemic, it said Thursday, announcing a Fight Night in Shanghai this summer. The top MMA promotion has poured resources into developing the China market and has a multimillion-dollar performance institute in Shanghai. But its ambitions were hampered by the tight travel and quarantine restrictions of China's zero-Covid era, which led to the cancellation of most international sports events in the country until the policies were lifted at the end of 2022. A planned Shanghai Fight Night in December the following year was relocated less than a month beforehand to Las Vegas because of 'logistical issues'. Kevin Chang, UFC's head in Asia, said this year's event will take place on August 23. However, it has maintained a presence in the country through its performance institute, which was opened in 2019 to develop Asian mixed martial artists. The centre has a partnership with the Chinese Olympic Committee.
