Heisman winners Ingram, Newton, Griffin are among players on College Football Hall of Fame ballot
Heisman Trophy winners Mark Ingram, Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III and former AP National Player of the Year Ndamukong Suh are on the ballot for the 2026 College Football Hall of Fame class. The National Football Foundation released the ballot Monday for the class that will be announced in January. It includes 79 players and nine coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision and 100 players and 35 coaches from lower levels. Ingram became Alabama's first Heisman winner in 2009 after running for 1,658 yards and 20 touchdowns. Newton in 2010 was just the third player in FBS history with 20 passing and 20 rushing touchdowns. Griffin in 2011 led the nation in points responsible for and ranked second in total offense. Suh was a force for Nebraska in 2009 and became the first defensive lineman in 15 seasons to be named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. He finished fourth in voting but was honored as the nation's top player by The Associated Press. Among other players on the ballot are Iowa's Brad Banks, Colorado's Eric Bieniemy, Oklahoma State's Dez Bryant, Penn State's Ki-Jana Carter, Pittsburgh's Aaron Donald, Syracuse's Marvin Harrison, Oklahoma's Josh Heupel, Ohio State's James Laurinaitis, Washington State's Ryan Leaf, California's Marshawn Lynch, Illinois' Simeon Rice and Florida State's Peter Warrick. Among coaches on the ballot are Larry Coker, Gary Patterson and Chris Petersen. Coker led the Canes to consecutive national championship games and won the 2002 Rose Bowl to become the first rookie head coach to lead his team to a title since 1948. Patterson is TCU's all-time wins leader who led the Horned Frogs to six AP top 10 final rankings. Petersen is Boise State's all-time wins leader who led the Broncos to two undefeated seasons and led Washington to the 2016 College Football Playoff. The NFF also announced an adjustment to the eligibility criteria for coaches to be considered for induction. The minimum career winning percentage required for coaching eligibility will go from .600 to .595 beginning in 2027. The change would make Mike Leach eligible. Leach, who died in 2022, had a .596 winning percentage with a 158-107 record over 21 seasons at Texas Tech, Washington State and Mississippi State. Leach was known for his innovative wide-open offenses and his knack for pulling upsets. He won 18 games against Top 25 opponents when his team was unranked.

Passenger spots volcano erupting from plane window
A Devon man has said it was "fascinating" to watch Mount Etna erupting during his flight home - a day after his wife had run up the volcano. Jon and Jo Meek, from Moretonhampstead, had been visiting Sicily for the European Masters Off Road Running Championship. Mrs Meek - who was sleeping while her husband watched the plumes of smoke from his window - ran in the competition which took place the day before the eruption. "I can't actually believe it because you fly out for one race and if the volcano had erupted and we couldn't race I would have been pretty gutted," she said. "Literally the day before, I ran up to the cable car station and back down as part of the race and we thought absolutely nothing of the volcano." The couple were separated on the plane and were both sat on opposite sides of the aircraft. "I have to confess I was fast asleep on the airplane... but Jon however had a great view," said Mrs Meek. Mr Meek said the experience was "exciting" but had the race been 24 hours later Mrs Meek would "have been in the thick of it". "I was just lucky I was sat in a window seat and overlooking it as we flew off so it's an amazing sight," he said. "I think it was just fascinating... it's exciting to watch. "When we took off and I had the view over it I looked over and she was fast asleep so she slept through the whole thing," he added. Latavius Murray announces new timeline for Jon Diaz Community Center opening, addresses multi-year delay
NEDROW, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Former NFL running back and Central New Yorker Latavius Murray announced on Monday plans for when his community center will finally be built. This comes after years of waiting, along with fundraisers being held for the project. In 2022, he set his sights on building the Jon Diaz Community Center in Nedrow, with the groundbreaking scheduled for 2023. Halfway through 2025, only the floor plan has been completed. 'We're about 99% done with the floor plan, which is a huge step, something a long time coming,' Murray said at a community meeting Monday night. 'We got excited about it, too and I was able to get some funding. Sometimes, I get capital funding that I can allocate around,' May said. 'I was able to get some funding for it. $500,000 for it.' Murray said the reason for the delay was having to wait for grant funds and more donors. 'When you have to apply for grants and get donors, it's a process. It's not easy, but it's something we signed up for and we're gaining momentum now,' he said. 'We're excited about where we are heading.' Now he says the plan is to have the groundbreaking in 2026 and the center open in 2027. 'While we have some goals in mind and things we want to accomplish with timelines, sometimes things change. What's important is keeping the main thing, the main thing, keep progressing, keep focus,' Murray said. 'We've been able to do that and that's why I feel confident in where we're going.' Murray partnered with the Integrated Community Alternatives Network to open an office space in Syracuse. The space will provide social and emotional services to families and children. The space is located at 1010 James Street. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
