UAE's oldest heritage festival returns with 400-year-old perfumery, train, book market

Khaleej Times27-01-2025

Residents in the UAE will be able to explore a 400-year-old perfumery, a book market and enjoy a ride in the heritage train during the Sharjah Heritage Days exhibition (SHD) next month.
The 22nd edition of the UAE's oldest heritage festival – from February 12 to 23, 2025 – will showcase true Emirati heritage.
Three major exhibitions will take place, including the 'Roots' exhibition, which explores Sharjah's historical milestones in education, traditional markets, and medical practices. The 'Scents through the ages' exhibition will document the evolution of perfumery across civilisations, while the 'A century of libraries' exhibition will highlight the emirate's literary and archival heritage dating back to 1925.

Another major highlight of this edition is 'Al Soor Square', a new venue for cultural activities, alongside the centennial celebration of Sharjah's first library, established in 1925. Additionally, the event will feature the launch of the 'book market', bringing together over 12 libraries and six publishing houses, offering a platform to celebrate literary heritage.
A dedicated 'heritage days train' will transport guests across the venue. The entry is free to make it a more family-oriented exhibition.
'Sharjah Heritage Days is the oldest heritage festival in the UAE. This year our slogan is 'Roots' because we want to focus on Emirati and GCC countries' heritage. We added more space to the festival area as we have a new square – Sharjah Old Wall Square. One of the most important aspects is the French perfumes exhibition where people will see the first production of perfumes dating back to 400 years. People will also get to see old bottles of perfumes,' said Dr Abdulaziz Al Musallam, chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage.
'People will enjoy all five senses – smell, taste, sight, touch and hear at the exhibition. Everything will be traditional and old-style. We are also using new technologies – like Metaverse – to attract the new generation.'
'We all need to go back to our roots. We are trying to showcase our real roots of heritage to attract youth in the UAE. In addition to GCC countries, we have 124 countries participating through their folk music. Expats in the UAE have their folk music groups who will be taking part in the exhibition,' Dr Al Musallam told Khaleej Times in an interview on Monday.
The festival will feature 14 academic lectures and 15 book launches, alongside cultural café discussions and the International School of Storytelling.
The exhibition will run in seven cities, starting in Sharjah City from February 12 to 23, before moving to Khorfakkan, Mleiha, Hamriyah, Al Dhaid, Kalba, and Dibba Al-Hisn.

‘Largest Princess Diana auction' features frocks, hats, shoes and bags

From colourful frocks and hats to handbags and shoes, items belonging to the late Princess Diana go under the hammer this month in what Julien's Auctions says is the largest collection of her fashion to go to auction. The live and online "Princess Diana's Style & A Royal Collection" sale will take place on June 26 at The Peninsula Beverly Hills, offering an array of fashion items Diana wore. "This is the largest Princess Diana auction because we have over 100 items from her amazing life and in mind Diana over 70 of her in 1997 to raise money for her charity," Martin Nolan, executive director and co-founder of Julien's Auctions, told Reuters on Monday. He was speaking at the Museum of Style Icons in Newbridge in Ireland during a pre-sale exhibition. Among the highlights is a 1988 silk floral dress by Bellville Sassoon, dubbed the "caring dress" because Diana wore it several times on hospital visits, with a price estimate of $200,000-$300,000. Chanel and Rayner shoes and a handbag that belonged to Princess Diana is displayed at a public exhibition in The Museum of Style Icons, in Newbridge, Ireland. A cream silk embroidered evening gown Catherine Walker designed for Diana's 1986 Gulf tour has a similar price tag, while a Bruce Oldfield two-piece yellow floral ensemble she wore for Royal Ascot in 1987 is estimated at $100,000-$200,000. Other sale items include a Dior handbag gifted to her by former French first lady Bernadette Chirac in 1995, a sketch of Diana's 1981 wedding dress with tulle fabric cut-offs from when she married then Prince Charles in 1981 and a peach hat she wore for her honeymoon send-off. Martin Nolan, co-founder of Julien's Auctions, poses with Princess Diana's Christian Dior 'Lady Dior' handbag. The auction also includes pieces belonging to other British royals including the late Queen Elizabeth II and the queen mother. Nolan said Julien's Auctions had previously sold a dress belonging to Diana for $1.14 million. The final calico toile for Princess Diana's Royal wedding gown designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel is displayed. Photos: Reuters "People do consider these items as an asset class now, because if people own these items today, chances are in years to come they will sell them for more than what they pay for (at) auction," he said. Part of the proceeds from the sale of Diana's items will go to charity Muscular Dystrophy UK. Reuters

Armenia announces visa-free travel for GCC nationals and residents starting July 1, 2025

UAE / GCC; Effective July 1, 2025, Armenia will introduce visa-free entry for citizens and residents of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, as part of a strategic initiative to strengthen economic relations, boost tourism, and facilitate business opportunities between Armenia and the GCC member states. This significant development aims to enhance Armenia's attractiveness as an accessible and welcoming destination within the South Caucasus, particularly appealing to visitors from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman. The new visa free policy will apply to all passport holders from GCC member states, enabling travel for tourism, leisure, or business purposes without a visa for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Additionally, individuals holding valid residency permit issued by any of the GCC countries with at least 6 months of validity from the date of entry to Armenia, will also be eligible for visa-free entry, thereby broadening the accessibility for a substantial segment of the GCC expatriate communities. Officials have highlighted the timeliness of this decision, noting the growing interest among GCC nationals and residents in exploring nearby destinations that offer authentic experiences, diverse culture, and natural beauty. With Armenia's rich historical heritage, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culinary scene, the country is well-positioned to attract a growing number of travellers and business visitors from the Gulf region. 'This milestone reflects our dedication to making Armenia more accessible to regional travellers,' said Lusine Gevorgyan, Chairman of the Tourism Committee of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Armenia. 'We look forward to welcoming more guests from the GCC who seek meaningful travel experiences - whether through our ancient monasteries, vibrant food scene, or immersive cultural festivals.' The Tourism Committee of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Armenia anticipates that the visa waiver will further stimulate collaboration with the GCC. The initiative supports Armenia's broader tourism strategy, which includes enhanced air connectivity, improved visitor infrastructure, and dynamic destination marketing across global markets. Armenia previously introduced visa-free travel for UAE citizens in 2017, Qatar citizens in 2019 and Kuwait citizens in 2022 - successful moves that laid the foundation for this expanded regional visa policy.
