What happened when a middle-class Brit went in search of the ‘Voice of America'
In this show, the comedian and impressionist Kieran Hodgson – most famous for his masterful online parodies, which range from The Crown to the 2024 general election – blends homely autobiographical stories with global events, trying to unpick the enigma of America. Having previously built shows around the UK's entry to the EU, learning Gaelic and composing his own symphony, he's certainly got the comedy tools at his disposal to be confident, amusing and self-laceratingly funny, despite the size of his task.
Voice of America revolves around an account of trying to create the right American accent for a Hollywood producer – but develops into an attempt to sell the joy and exuberance of America to a wary audience shell-shocked by Trump. When he asks who's tuning out of the news, there's a strong swell of acknowledgement from the crowd.

Hodgson has always had a strong line in British middle-class self-deprecation. His awkward erudition, he explains, is based on growing up the son of English teachers – when he asks if he can have an ice cream, his father replies that he can, but he may not – and his confidence crumbles when said producer asks him to play 'Sandwich Guy' in the opening scene of superhero box-office flop The Flash.
Hodgson has made his career out of his uncanny skill as an impressionist. He even uses silly voices at moments of intense personal interaction, such as his husband's proposal. It's a reflex, and he's imitated Americans since he was on his primary school playground, intoning 'I did not have sex with that woman.' So his failure to deliver a convincing accent for Sandwich Guy prompts soul searching – and a host of other impressions as he recounts his attempts to find that elusive accent and, by extension, the voice of America itself.
As a kid in the Nineties he loved Independence Day and Home Alone. He came of age in the 2000s confounded by Bushisms – 'Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we' – and found evangelicals banning Harry Potter as irritating as emo bands. But neither decade gave him the voice he was looking for, he tells us.
For a while, he blames America and Trump's voice, which threatens to overwhelm the show. Hodgson keeps trying not to lurch into an impression of the US president, identifying the White House occupant as essentially a stand-up comedian who delivers a rambling stream of consciousness like a Nazi Ross Noble. Then a visit to a British-themed pub in Portland, Oregon that's so nearly right but so very wrong teaches him how easy it is to think you've heard a country but have actually failed to listen properly.
The show concludes in an unexpectedly dark place for the typically upbeat performer. As he demonstrates his Sandwich Guy scene, he morphs uncannily into Trump, berating both crowd and performer like the MC at the end of Cabaret. But whilst Trump may be the voice of today's America, Hodgson insists that the country's brash charm ensures change is always possible.

Brad Pitt risks awkward run-in with ex Angelina Jolie amid loved-up PR tour with Ines de Ramon
Brad Pitt has been at risk of an awkward run-in with his second ex-wife Angelina Jolie over the past week as the less-than-amicable exes have both been out and about in Manhattan. On Monday, the 61-year-old movie star and his much younger girlfriend since 2022, Inés-Olivia de Ramon, looked loved up at the world premiere of his new film F1 in the heart of Times Square. 'He loved having Ines by his side,' a source told People. 'She's no drama, very supportive, and they're doing really well.' And last Friday, Brad and the 32-year-old Anita Ko Jewelry VP double dated with Bradley Cooper and his much younger girlfriend Gigi Hadid at the Michelin-starred Korean steakhouse, Cote, in the Flatiron district. The Real Housewives of New York City star Jessel Taank was dining at the same restaurant and she told Page Six Radio on Tuesday that when the group (including Bradley's mother Gloria Campano) got up to leave, Pitt scored a 'standing ovation' from patrons. Meanwhile, the 50-year-old Maria star was spotted shopping for groceries by herself at Fairway Market of 74th Street in the Upper West Side, a source told Page Six on Tuesday. Angelina - whose Atelier Jolie is located in the NoHo district - has reportedly owned a condo in The Ansonia since 1997, and she told the New York Times last March that one of her sons (either Maddox or Pax) uses it as 'a crash pad.' On July 12, the exes formerly known as 'Brangelina' - who finalized their divorce on Christmas Day - will celebrate the 17th birthdays of their only remaining underage children, fraternal twins Vivienne and Knox. Five of Brad and Angelina's six children appear to be estranged from him including their daughters Zahara, 20; Shiloh, 19; and Vivienne - who've all publicly dropped his surname Pitt from their names. Pitt reportedly got into a physical altercation with their son Maddox, 23; aboard a private jet in 2016 and their son Pax, 21; called him a 'world-class a**hole' and a 'despicable person' in an explosive Instagram rant revealed by the Daily Mail. The two-time Oscar winner has since joined an all-male AA group in LA. Brad and Jolie are entering year four of their legal war over their 1,200-acre winery Château Miraval in Correns, France where they wed, which is reportedly worth $164M. Pitt and the Oscar-winning actress purchased the the 35-room estate together for $28.4M in 2011, but he sued her in 2021 after she sold her stake in the ownership to the Stoli Group without his approval, which prompted a countersuit. Angelina had initially offered to settle, but she reportedly took issue with the mandatory non-disclosure agreement and backed out. The Wolfs producer-star and Jolie - were technically only married from 2014-2016 - famously met portraying a married couple on the 2004 set of spy flick Mr. & Mrs. Smith, which prompted his 2005 divorce from Jennifer Aniston. Brad produced and stars as racer-for-hire Sonny Hayes in Joseph Kosinski's $200M-budget sports drama F1, which hits UK theaters June 25 and US theaters June 27. The racing flick currently has an impressive 87% critic approval rating (out of 67 reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes. F1 also features Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, and Javier Bardem. Pitt just shaved his head for his role as a reclusive ex-Navy SEAL in David Ayer's action-adventure film Heart of the Beast alongside J. K. Simmons and Anna Lambe, which was shot in New Zealand. The Plan B Entertainment founder produced Amy Berg's rock-doc It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley - which Magnolia Pictures will release in US theaters on August 8. Brad also recently produced Bono: Stories of Surrender, Adolescence, Mickey 17, and 3 Body Problem. Last February, Angelina wrapped her role as American filmmaker Maxine Walker on the Paris set of Alice Winocour's fashion drama Couture for Pathé. Jolie was last an interviewee and contributor to Rebecca and Josh Tickell's environmental docuseries Bee: Wild, which premiered June 5 at SXSW London. The Tony-winning producer has yet to announce a US/UK release date for her dismally-reviewed sixth directorial effort Without Blood, which Fremantle released in Italian theaters on April 10. Angelina will also eventually reprise her role as the Mistress of Evil in Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures' third Maleficent film penned by Linda Woolverton.

Mariska Hargitay's sweet homage to late mom Jayne Mansfield after paternity scandal
Mariska Hargitay channeled her late mother Jayne Mansfield while appearing on the The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Monday night. For the television spot, the 61-year-old Law & Order: SVU star wore a black pantsuit with beaded accents throughout. Her mother, who died in a car accident in 1967 at age 34, wore a form-fitting black dress with the same design during a glamorous moment at the Cannes Film Festival in 1958. Hargitay, who premiered her documentary My Mom Jayne at Tribeca Festival last week, layered a black camisole under her jacket and added pointy-toe black heels. She described her ensemble as 'a little homage' to her movie star mom. 'I think the reason I made this movie now is because I was ready to make it now,' she said of her decision to produce the documentary 58 years after her mom's tragic death. The Emmy-winning actress added, 'In a way I feel like I've been preparing my entire life to make it.' She went on to say that she discovered boxes of fan letters pertaining to her mom during the covid-19 pandemic. 'I had the time to sit with each letter and people had sent me things that were truly a gift,' Hargitay said finding the trove of personal stories and playbills. 'So, I said, "I think I wanna dig in here,"' she added about feeling inspired to create the film. Mariska had previously spoke of her mom during her own appearance at the Cannes Film Festival this year, telling Deadline: 'The photos of her, in Cannes in particular, were always so meaningful to me because of how free and happy and in love she was with my father.' She said the striking black and white images 'seared this emotional place' in her mind. 'To be here, to bring her back here, and to tell her story was quite meaningful,' she reflected. In her new movie, she dropped a bombshell revelation — that her biological father is former Las Vegas entertainer Nelson Sardelli and not Hargitay, the man who raised her. The documentary reveals Mariska's siblings' account of being pulled out of the wreck that killed their mom and taken to safety, only to realize later that Mariska had been left behind by mistake. She was later found wedged under a seat with a head injury, at just three-years-old. According to People, Mariska's older brother Zoltan told her that Jayne had initially been in the backseat of the car but moved up front with her boyfriend Sam Brody during an argument. The children remained asleep in the back of the Buick Electra, where they survived the crash that killed Jayne, Sam and driver Ronald Harrison.

Nike delays Skims launch with Kim Kardashian indefinitely
Nike has delayed a Skims collaboration launch with Kim Kardashian indefinitely due to production delays, according to a new report. Consumers excited for Nike's new fitness brand with Skims will have to wait a little longer to get that sculpted Kardashian look as the NikeSkims launch has been pushed back, Bloomberg first reported. The business outlet reported Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter, that NikeSkims is having production delays. Kardashian, the co-founder and chief creative officer of Skims, introduced NikeSkims in an X post in February as 'a new brand coming this spring for the body obsessed.' Nike Chief Executive Officer Elliott Hill announced in March that the first 'comprehensive collection' from the new brand was expected to be available during the business quarter that ended in May, per Bloomberg. One anonymous source told Bloomberg that Nike will still release the new brand sometime this year. A Nike news release introducing the collaboration with Skims in February said it would include training apparel, footwear and accessories 'designed to meet the unique needs and preferences of women athletes around the world.' 'The new brand merges NIKE, Inc.'s world-class approach to advanced innovation, sport science and athlete insights with SKIMS' obsession for the female form and pioneering pursuit of solutions for every body,' the release read. At the time, Nike said the first collection would debut domestically in the spring, and a 'global expansion' was set for 2026. It's now unclear when the first collection and its subsequent global line will be released. Consumers have also yet to see which exact apparel items will be included in the collection. 'Nike and SKIMS share a deep commitment to innovation, inclusivity and pushing boundaries, driven by an unwavering belief in the power of women,' Kardashian said in Nike's February news release. She continued: 'This partnership is the culmination of that shared vision, delivering product that is meticulously designed to sculpt and perform for every body. Every single detail has been obsessed over and carefully considered.'
