
How long do measles vaccines last? Do adults need booster shots? Five things to know
A disease once thought eradicated in the United States is back again following outbreaks in 12 states, leading to the death of at least one child, health officials say.
More than 200 measles cases have now been confirmed, including one confirmed fatality from the disease and a second suspected fatality, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's latest data, as of March 7.
Those under the age of 19 have been hit the hardest, accounting for 79% of cases so far in 2025, the CDC says.
While the vast majority of cases are among people who had not been vaccinated, those who received the measles vaccine in their childhood may be wondering about the shot's longevity and effectiveness later in life, including whether there is a booster for adults.
Here are five things to know about navigating the measles outbreak.
Where are the measles outbreaks?
Health officials have confirmed measles cases in 12 states: Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas and Washington, according to the CDC.
The largest outbreak is in west Texas, where more than 20 people have been hospitalized so far and where the first measles death since 2015 was recorded, according to Harvard professor Robert Shmerling.
A few cases have been confirmed in previously vaccinated people, but the other 94% of cases are among unvaccinated people, primarily children, the CDC says.
The majority of hospitalizations from the disease are among children under the age of 5, and the confirmed measles fatality in Texas was a 'school-aged' child, according to Texas Health and Human Services.
The second death under investigation in New Mexico was reported as an unvaccinated adult, the New Mexico Department of Health said.
In comparison to last year, there were a total of 285 measles cases reported in 2024, including 120 in children under 5, 88 in children and teens and 77 in adults older than 20, according to the CDC.
Of those, 89% of cases were among unvaccinated individuals.
When are measles vaccines recommended?
Two vaccines against measles are available and recommended in the United States.
The MMR vaccine includes protection against measles, mumps and rubella. The MMRV vaccine adds varicella, or chickenpox, to the same regimen, according to the CDC.
Both vaccines are recommended as part of the regular childhood immunization program with other shots, the CDC says, and deciding between the two should follow a discussion with your child's health care provider.
The MMR vaccine is given in two doses in early childhood. The first dose is given to infants aged 12 to 15 months, and the second dose is given to kids aged 4 to 6 years, according to the CDC.
If children were not vaccinated on this schedule, doctors may recommend the vaccines later in life, and infants traveling internationally can get both doses before their first birthday, the CDC says.
The MMRV vaccine is approved only for children between the ages of 12 months and 12 years, and includes a 12-to-15-month dose and a 4-to-6-year dose. The second dose can be given as early as 3 months after the first dose if needed, the CDC says.
If you haven't ever been vaccinated, the MMR vaccine can be administered to someone in the first 72 hours after they were knowingly exposed to measles and that can offer some protection against the worst symptoms of the disease, according to the CDC.
How long are measles vaccinations effective?
If you were vaccinated as a child, you most likely will not need another shot as an adult, the CDC says.
One dose of the MMR vaccine has been found to be 93% effective against measles, and a second dose raises the effectiveness to 97%.
While the vaccine is effective, it doesn't mean you can never be infected with measles. Effective means you are less likely to become infected, but even if you do, the symptoms will likely be milder and you are less likely to spread the disease to other people, according to the CDC.
'Some vaccinated people may still get measles, mumps or rubella if they are exposed to the viruses,' the CDC says. 'It could be that their immune system didn't respond as well as they should have to the vaccine; their immune system's ability to fight the infection decreased over time; or they have prolonged, close contact with someone who has the virus.'
Measles is highly contagious and spreads more easily than the flu, COVID-19 and even Ebola, according to Harvard Medical School.
Communities therefore are most easily protected through herd immunity, meaning enough people are vaccinated against measles in a given area that the disease is unable to spread even if the few unvaccinated people are infected.
Didn't we eradicate measles in the U.S.?
While measles was first observed and recorded by a Persian doctor in the ninth century, the disease wasn't a nationally notifiable disease in the United States until 1912, according to the CDC.
Between 1912 and the 1960s, when a vaccine was developed, nearly all children got the measles before the age of 15, infecting between 3 and 4 million people per year, the CDC says.
Each year, these infections led to 48,000 hospitalizations, 400 to 500 deaths and 1,000 cases of encephalitis, or brain swelling.
Then, in 1954 measles was successfully isolated from the blood of a 13-year-old and could be used for vaccine development, which came a decade later, the CDC says.
A weak vaccine was licensed in 1963, but a stronger, more effective vaccine was created and approved in 1968, according to the CDC. This vaccine is the same strain used today, though the shot is now combined with vaccines against mumps, rubella and varicella to create the MMR and MMRV shot.
The shot was so effective that a vaccination program dropped measles cases 80% between 1980 and 1981, according to the CDC.
Case numbers continued to decline until measles was declared 'eliminated' in the U.S. in 2000, meaning the continuous spread of the disease was stopped for more than 12 months, the CDC says.
This doesn't mean that there were never any cases, but they were considered isolated and those with the disease may have been infected outside the country. This success was directly attributed to the high vaccination rate of children, which has since wavered and allowed an 'eradicated' disease to return.
What are the signs and symptoms of measles?
'Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that typically begins with fever, cough, coryza (runny nose), and conjunctivitis (pink eye), lasting 2-4 days prior to rash onset,' the CDC says.
The virus is spread through direct contact or through the air from an infected person's breathing, coughing and sneezing, the CDC says. The virus can stay infectious in the air and on surfaces for up to 2 hours.
'Infected people are contagious from 4 days before the rash starts through 4 days afterward. The incubation period for measles, from exposure to fever, is usually about 7-10 days, and from exposure to rash onset is usually about 10-14 days (with a range of 7 to 21 days),' the CDC says.
Anyone who suspects they may have measles, or knows they have been exposed to measles, should isolate themselves in a private room and alert your doctor. A test will be issued to confirm an infection, typically a nasal or throat swab.
Doctors may then recommend an MMR vaccine if you have never been vaccinated or will provide additional care. Measles does not have a specific antiviral therapy.
Anyone with a fever of more than 101 degrees Fahrenheit with an associated rash and cough, and if they traveled internationally or to a measles hotspot in the United States, should be tested for measles.

FOX 2 - The Oakland County Health Division is notifying the public about a Rochester Hills measles exposure site involving a person from another county. The exposure site is a medical office building at 3950 S. Rochester Road at the corner of South Boulevard on Tuesday, June 3, according to a release from the Oakland County Health Division. SALT LAKE CITY () — With measles cases increasing in the U.S., including two recent brushes with the disease in Utah, health officials want to remind the public that the safest protection against it is the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Earlier this week, the Utah Department of Health and Human Services announced they are monitoring a potential measles exposure in southwestern Utah after an unvaccinated individual from out of state visited the area while infectious with the disease. Health officials report that measles is one of the most contagious diseases. Measles signs and symptoms generally appear about 10-14 days after exposure, with common symptoms including high fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, and white spots in the mouth known as Koplik's spots. In addition, a rash with small red spots may appear after 3-5 days. The CDC reports that measles was declared eliminated from the United States in 2000, which is described as an absence of the continuous spread of disease for more than 12 months. But, there have been more cases in recent years. Currently the CDC says there are 1,168 confirmed measles cases in the United States. There have been three confirmed deaths from measles in the U.S. in 2025. It's a pretty bad disease — and when we say childhood illness, we think of something like chickenpox, where kids are uncomfortable for two or three days, and that's it. Measles is miserable in its average form, but can be dangerous, or even deadly. That's why we really care about it, and that's why we really, really want everyone to help protect their children.' The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that the MMR vaccine is safe and effective, and that it protects you from measles, mumps, rubella, and other serious diseases. According to the CDC, almost everyone who has not had the MMR vaccine will get sick if they are exposed to those viruses. The says that numerous studies have been conducted over the year, confirming its safety and efficacy. Minimal risks, such as swelling in cheeks or neck and allergic reactions can occur, the AAP said, but the protecton it provides far outweighs the risks and more serious outcomes that can come from measles itself. Dr. Pavia said that the vaccine has low rates of potential side effects and protects you against measles for life. 'This vaccine has been extremely carefully studied. It has been studied in placebo-controlled trials, and every time it's been tweaked or improved slightly, the new version has been compared to the old one,' Dr. Pavia said. 'It's very, very safe by the standards of any medicine you want to look at. That's not to say there aren't some side effects. Kids, not uncommonly, can get a fever after the MMR vaccine. They can also get a rash 1 to 2 weeks out, or some joint aches. It's a little bit more common in adults who get it, but serious complications of this vaccine are extraordinarily rare and rarer than with most other vaccines.' One dose of the MMR vaccine is 93% effective against measles, while two doses are 97% effective, according to the CDC. The CDC says that although some vaccinated people may still get measles, mumps, or rubella if exposed to the viruses, their symptoms will generally be milder, and they will be less likely to spread the disease. The CDC said that the MMR vaccine has been thoroughly studied in the United States and other countries and no link between autism and the MMR vaccine has been found. Although the vaccine, like medicine, can have side effects, these are typically mild and go away on their own. 'There are no long-term consequences of the MMR vaccine and it's been incredibly well-studied because of the concerns people have raised,' Dr Pavia. said. 'There are over 20 studies looking at whether or not there's any connection to autism. That's a common thing that's brought up, and these studies done in many different countries have showed absolutely no link. With a serious disease and a very good vaccine, if you're going to pick one vaccine to get this summer, it should be the one.' Some may believe getting measles and developing natural immunity is safer than getting the vaccine, however, say otherwise, as natural infection comes with more risks. Dr. Pavia explained getting the disease from natural infection is more dangerous with serious cases leading to the hospital, death, or brain damage. 'If none of those things happen, you're going to be miserable, or your child's going to be miserable for four to eight days,' Dr. Pavia said. '… If I had a good vaccine to offer for rattlesnake bites, would you say it's better to get bitten by a rattlesnake and develop some immunity to the venom or to get a vaccine?' Both recent brushes with measles in Utah were related to travel, which we will be seeing more of this summer. Dr. Pavia said now is a good time to think about getting your kids vaccinated and protected. 'Utahns are going to be traveling with their kids this summer, going to places where there's even more measles. Of course, Utah's an important destination for people during the summer, so we can expect more importations, more people showing up in Utah with measles. It's really important that we and our kids have the best protection possible,' he said. Dr. Pavia also emphasized the importance of seeking out reputable resources to learn more and educate yourself on MMR vaccine information, such as speaking to your own family practitioner. 'I think it's really important for people to educate themselves. We say that a lot, but then you go to social media or talk to friends, and there's just so much misinformation out there. Educate yourself, but look for reliable sources. Go to the Utah State Department of Health. Look at the University of Utah or Intermountain websites. Go to Medscape. There are lots of good sources of information where you can learn more, but just be careful in what you consume,' he said. Migratory birds develop antibodies to bird flu, officials say
(WAVY) – Wildlife officials are keeping a close eye on the spread of avian influenza after along the North Carolina coast earlier this year — most of them brown pelicans. The outbreak has since been linked to the H5N1 strain of bird flu, a virus that continues to mutate and occasionally jump to other species, raising concern among experts. Miranda Turner, a wildlife health biologist with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, said the area is a prime wintering ground for birds — making it easier for disease to spread. 'When you bring a lot of animals together and you have them traveling from different locations, it's a really good way to transmit diseases,' Turner said. In Hampton Roads, bird flu outbreaks aren't new. Lisa Barlow, president of T recalls treating sick and dying Canada geese during a 2021 outbreak on the Lafayette River. 'We dealt with about three to four dozen Canada geese that came in sick and dying,' Barlow said. 'Only six survived the flu, and even those had to be euthanized due to severe neurological symptoms.' Barlow described birds arriving unable to hold their heads up, their beaks caked in mud. Many died within 24 hours. As the virus continues to affect wildlife, it's not just birds at risk. , including seals, cats and even cattle. Experts say it's mutated at least several times since it was first identified. 'I mean, anything that can do that — it's kind of frightening, but amazing,' Barlow said. Despite the concerning spread, health officials emphasize the risk to humans remains low. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 70 human cases have been reported nationwide, including one death. Most infections have been among people with repeated exposure to infected animals, such as poultry or dairy farm workers. 'There's really low risk,' Turner said. 'Still, it's a good idea to clean bird feeders regularly and wear gloves or a mask if you handle injured wildlife.' Barlow also urges caution for those who come across sick birds. 'If you do want to help, wear gloves, protect yourself,' she said. 'Common sense goes a long way.' Meanwhile, as migratory birds continue to interact and spread the virus, some are developing natural antibodies, according to Turner. 'They're bouncing back and creating herd immunity,' she said. Last week, the Associated Press reported the in funding meant to support Moderna's development of a bird flu vaccine. The vaccine, which uses mRNA technology similar to the COVID-19 vaccine, had shown early promise in clinical trials. For now, wildlife officials say they expect to see more outbreaks in the years ahead, especially during peak migration periods. 'Because this virus is so common in migratory birds, it is likely that we will continue to see cases here and there every winter,' Turner said. As of right now, there have been no confirmed human cases of H5N1 in Virginia and although the risk remains low for humans, for birds it can be extremely deadly – leading to large die-off events like the ones we saw near Cape Hatteras. 'Unfortunately, this was the first kind of major large scale mortality event… while it looks really bad at that small scale of seeing 300 brown pelicans die – it's not impacting their population as a whole or the species as a whole,' adds Turner. Turner also explains that the surviving pelicans are still there, 'The brown pelicans that did survive that event were still nesting on that island successfully and are doing well.
