Nepali Sherpa scales Mount Everest for a record 31st time
Nepali Sherpa guide Kami Rita scaled Mount Everest for the 31st time on Tuesday, breaking the record he set last year.
The 55-year-old reached the 29,032 foot peak - the highest in the world - by the traditional southeast ridge route while guiding a 22-member Indian army team, officials said, adding that 27 other Sherpas also accompanied the group.
"He is a very passionate climber," said Pasang Phurba, director of the Seven Summit Treks company for which Kami Rita works, adding that Rita was currently descending to lower camps.
Rita first climbed Everest in 1994 and has done so every year except for three years when authorities closed the mountain to climbers for various reasons.
More than 8,000 people have climbed Mount Everest since it was first scaled by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953.
After Rita, another Sherpa, Pasang Dawa, has ascended Everest the most with 29 climbs. Among non-Sherpa climbers, the record is held by British guide Kenton Cool who has accomplished the feat 19 times, followed by American climbers Dave Hahn and Garrett Madison with 15 times each.
One of the poorest countries in the world, Nepal is home to eight of the world's 14 highest peaks and is heavily reliant on climbing, trekking, and tourism for foreign exchange.
Guiding foreign climbers to Everest and other peaks provides crucial family income to many Sherpas.
Authorities have issued 468 permits to climbers for Everest this March-May climbing season, and more than 300 climbers and Sherpas have already scaled the peak, officials said.
Two climbers are known to have died on the mountain this month and there have also been unconfirmed reports of other deaths.

Indian airline IndiGo said on Sunday it had signed an order for 30 more Airbus A350-900s, bringing its shopping list for the widebody aircraft from the European aircraft manufacturer to 60. 'We are placing a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900s,' said Pieter Elbers, the CEO of IndiGo, a company founded in 2006 and already behind the largest contract by volume in the history of civil aviation -- 500 Airbus single-aisle aircraft by 2023. The Indian low-cost carrier, the country's biggest by market share, is positioning itself as a significant player in the long-haul market. 'This strategic move will enable IndiGo to spread its wings further and expand its long-haul international network', the company said in a statement. The A350 planes, with ranges of up to 15,000 kilometres (9,300 miles), will allow it to further expand its network. Amid torrid conditions, Jaguar TCS Racing's Nick Cassidy converted from pole, leading every lap of the race to produce a first win of the season in the 2025 Hankook Shanghai E-Prix Round 11 at a rain-soaked Shanghai International Circuit. Cassidy topped a weather-truncated Groups-only qualifying session to seal pole and strode away into an immediate lead, where he was able to stay for the duration of Round 11 in tricky conditions as the rain continued to fall – though less heavily than throughout the morning. The win was a first lights-to-flag victory of the GEN3 Evo era and a return to the top step for the New Zealander. Five-way tie at Dubai Open Chess Tournament
Top-seed Grandmaster (GM) Nihal Sarin scored an emphatic victory to bounce back into the lead after erstwhile co-leaders GM Mahammad Muradli and GM Aleksey Grebnev agreed to a quick, uneventful draw in Friday night's fourth round of the 25th Dubai Open Chess Tournament at the Dubai Chess and Culture Club. The three grandmasters have 3.5 points each and are joined in a five-way tie at the top by Indian players IM Rohith Krishna and GM Bharath Subramaniyam. Sarin, who was held to a draw by Krishna in the third round, repulsed a daring attack against his king by Israel's GM Yair Parkhov in securing the win. The Indian top-seed maintained a solid grip of the position and was poised to win material when Parkhov launched a kingside offensive punctuated by a rook sacrifice. Sarin did not have problems diffusing the attack and converting into an endgame where he was a piece up. The 28th-seed Krishna continued his stellar performance as he took down the ninth-seed GM Pa Iniyan, his first GM victim in the tournament, in a fashionable Queen's Gambit opening. Playing the black pieces, Krishna overcame a vicious attack that saw Iniyan sacrifice a pawn and then give up his rook for a knight to penetrate Krishna's kingside defences. Krishna, however, found enough defensive resources to neutralise Iniyan's attack and later forced an exchange of queens to convert into a winning rook-versus-knight endgame. Subramaniyam pounced on a costly oversight by compatriot IM A R Ilamparthi to pick up the win. Ilamparthi, playing white, had built a comfortable edge in the Pelikan variation of the Sicilian Defence until an unfortunate knight retreat on the 25th move allowed Subramaniyam to drop a devastating bishop sacrifice, which if taken would lead to Ilamparthi losing his queen. Ilamparthi chose to save his queen, but the tactical sequence still led to heavy material loss that ultimately decided the outcome. In the first all-GM encounter on the first board, Muradli of Azerbaijan and the Russian Grebnev shook hands for a draw after just four moves, effectively giving themselves a breather ahead of the expected tougher battles in the later rounds. The fourth-round results set up a highly anticipated match-up on the first board in Saturday's fifth round featuring defending champion Muradli facing the top-seed Sarin. Grebnev will take on Subramaniyam on the second board. Krishna will face reigning Asian blitz champion GM Ivan Zemlyanskii of Russia, who is among a group of eight players in joint second place with three points each, on the third board.
