What Happened?
On June 4, 2025, Morpheus Research published a report alleging, among other things, that Abacus uses fraudulent life expectancy data to drive revenues. Specifically, the report alleges 'contrary to Abacus' disclosures to the SEC' Abacus relies heavily on life expectancy ('LE') reports generated by 'AI powered' Lapetus Solutions. The report states former Abacus employees revealed the Company 'built Lapetus LEs into… the proprietary pricing tool that Abacus made' and 'would not gather the other life expectancy info.' The report asserts 'Abacus' reliance on Lapetus to value its portfolio presents a material risk to the $446 million in claimed life settlements on its books as of Q1 2025' because '[t]he indicative value on a Lapetus LE is 50% higher than with the other LE providers.'
On this news, Abacus's stock price fell $1.64, or 21.5%, to close at $6.00 per share on June 4, 2025, thereby injuring investors.

Property assessments are out. Here's how much home values went up in your area
Property values have increased again in Ada County, but not as fast as in previous years. In 2024, the median home value in Ada County increased by 5.3%, according to the Ada County Assessor's Office. That's just a smidgen more than the 5.03% increase in 2023, according to Chief Deputy Assessor Brad Smith. 'It's encouraging to see a more stable market after the erratic valuation swings of the past,' Smith said in an email. The latest annual property assessments have been mailed to homeowners. The assessed value is what the office believes each property could have sold for in the real estate market. The new median assessed value in Ada County is $480,000, up from about $455,000 last year. Home values have certainly been erratic. Residential assessments skyrocketed in the early 2020s, when for multiple years the median assessed value for Ada County homes jumped by close to 30%. Then in 2023, most residents saw their assessments decrease. Homeowners have until the fourth Monday in June to appeal their homes' assessed value. So far, after a historically low year in 2024, appeals and phone calls are up, according to the office. Some homeowners may not see much change in their new assessments. Star has the lowest median assessed value jump in Ada County, an increase of 1.6%. Values jumped by over 7% in the 2024 assessments. On the other hand, North Boise took the top spot this year with a 7% median increase. Northeast Boise followed close behind at 6.6%. That brings North Boise up to a median $668,000 and Northeast Boise to a whopping $729,000. Times have changed in the last decade. In 2015, Northeast Boise homes were valued at less than half of that, right around $300,000. Northeast Boise is not the highest-priced neighborhood in the county though. That distinction belongs to Eagle, at $803, two lowest-valued neighborhoods are Garden City and West Boise, which both come in at under $398,000. Commercial property values increased 1.3% this year, down from last year's growth of around 2.7%. Property values and property taxes are not the same thing, the Assessor's Office stresses. Just because home values go up, residents don't automatically pay more in taxes. Tax increases also depend on how much money is needed to pay for local-government budgets. Local governments are working now to develop their budgets for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. Only then are levy rates set and actual taxes on your home determined. Statue honoring Lancaster's first Black business owner completed
LANCASTER, Ohio (WCMH) — There is a new statue in the city of Lancaster honoring Scipio Smith, the man who became the city's first Black business owner in the 1800s. The statue is along Main Street, not far from where Smith's tinsmith shop was located. The statue shows Smith holding an open shackle with the day he was emancipated inscribed on it. He was enslaved in Virginia before being brought to Ohio. 'That was his way of showing you can't stop me, even this chain didn't hold me down,' said Michael Johnson, a local historian and the marketing director for the Fairfield County Heritage Association. 'You can't get much more of an underdog than being born a slave and losing your leg as a child.' Johnson found a brief entry about Smith in a history book. He said he'd never seen an entry quite like it, so he dug deeper. Eventually he learned about Smith's history as a slave. Four years after Smith was freed, he founded the AME church in town, which is now Allen Chapel. Italian eatery from Columbus couple behind Chapman's, Ginger Rabbit to open Friday 'To know he was right here, to know he was responsible for this church,' said Evan Saunders, Pastor of Allen Chapel. 'You don't even know the lives he's touched but yet here 2025 we realize he's touching a whole community with that so his legacy still continues to live on.' About two years after opening the church, Smith opened a tinsmith shop in Lancaster. That made him the city's first Black business owner, according to Johnson. 'He was pretty quick to act once he got his freedom. He knew what he wanted,' Johnson said. 'Opened door for other Black business owners.' Johnson wrote about Smith's story. But he wanted to do more to honor the local legend. About two years ago he started fundraising for a statue. It's now completed, full of symbols and Smith's story. 'For me I think statues are celebrations, they are people we should be looking up to, the ideals they represent, and Scipio, you can't beat his work ethic, his faith, his tenacity, the ability to overcome unbelievable obstacles.
