Another DeepSeek moment? China's kung fu bot goes open source

From stiff-limbed dances to Bruce Lee-style whirlwind kicks, China's humanoid
robotics race just took a cinematic turn.

Unitree Robotics, the Hangzhou-based firm behind the
viral G1 robot , has open-sourced its cutting-edge algorithms and hardware designs, mirroring the collaborative ethos that propelled AI breakthroughs such as DeepSeek's open-source models.
A month after its awkward debut at
China's Spring Festival Gala , the G1 robot executed split-second martial arts manoeuvres in Unitree's latest demo released on Wednesday.
At a price tag of 99,000 yuan (US$13,622), the bot – equipped with 43 joints and mimicry learning – launched a spinning back kick so fluid it drew comparisons to Enter the Dragon.
'What moves do you want next?'
Unitree teased on social media, signalling ambitions beyond the scripted choreography of rival Boston Dynamics.

In a playbook reminiscent of China's AI open-source surge, Unitree has released data sets, reinforcement learning training code and hardware specs for its H1 and G1 models on GitHub, a platform often used to open source development projects.

ByteDance, SenseTime unveil model updates as China's AI race heats up

China's artificial intelligence (AI) market sees heightened competition, as various model providers – from SenseTime to ByteDance – step up efforts to enhance their services. Hong Kong-listed SenseTime has upgraded its Cantonese-speaking chatbot, Sensechat, with a comprehensive set of new features that include real-time audio and video-interaction capabilities, according to the company's announcement on Thursday. Other enhancements include visual reasoning capabilities, which allow Sensechat to 'see' and 'think' while engaging with users. The feature was made possible by the multimodal reasoning capabilities of SenseTime's SenseNova V6 AI model , the company said. Multimodal models are designed to understand multiple types of input data such as text, video and audio, unlike traditional models that only handle one type. SenseTime is one of China's pioneering AI companies. Chinese tech champions from Tencent to Unitree boost European ties amid US trade war

Chinese companies, including Huawei Technologies and Unitree Robotics, are grabbing plenty of attention at one of Europe's largest technology shows in Paris this week, as Beijing commits to deepen technological ties with France amid an intensifying rivalry with the US. In a speech at the China Pavilion of the VivaTech trade show on Thursday, Chinese ambassador to France Deng Li said the country would continue to promote 'open cooperation' and 'peaceful development' in global technology, adding that Beijing was ready to collaborate with Paris to enhance scientific and technological exchanges. The China Pavilion, organised by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, showcased innovative technologies, including a humanoid and a robot dog from Hangzhou-based start-up Unitree , which has become a symbol of the nation's advances in robotics. Europe is currently Unitree's third-largest market, behind China and the US, according to a company staff member. Unitree has sold thousands of its G1 humanoid robot and hundreds of its B2 industrial robot dog globally, he said. China's ambassador to France, Deng Li (centre, in suit), tours the China Pavilion. Tech losses lead Hang Seng Index to lower close

Tech losses lead Hang Seng Index to lower close The benchmark Hang Seng Index ended the day down 331.56 points, or 1.36 percent, to close at 24,035.38. File photo: RTHK Stocks in mainland China and Hong Kong ended mostly lower on Thursday, led by declines in the tech sector, as markets struggled to sustain the positive momentum from the Sino-US trade talks that lacked concrete details. In Hong Kong, the benchmark Hang Seng Index ended the day down 331.56 points, or 1.36 percent, to close at 24,035.38. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index slid 1.53 percent to end at 8,729.96 while the Hang Seng Tech Index slumped 2.20 percent to 5,331.33. Mainland Chinese stocks ended up mixed, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.01 percent at 3,402.66 and the Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.11 percent down at 10,234.33 The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.26 percent to close at 2,067.15. Among major losers, chipmaker SMIC fell 2 percent to a one-week low. Alibaba weakened 3.2 percent and EV maker Xpeng slid 6.7 percent. The CSI Rare Earth Index closed flat after slipping nearly 1 percent in the morning session and continued to hover near its seven-month high. A trade truce between the world's two biggest economies was back on track, US President Donald Trump said, a day after negotiators from Washington and Beijing agreed on a framework to ease bilateral retaliatory tariffs. Under the agreement, Beijing will lift export curbs on rare earth minerals and the United States will restore Chinese students' access to its universities, Trump said on Truth Social. Yet the terms remain subject to final approvals, with details notably absent. The 55 percent tariffs on Chinese imports will also stay, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said. "We still don't know if what Trump says will actually happen. It's disappointing that the tariffs rates were not dialled down at all and tech curbs on China were not even mentioned," said Jason Chan, senior investment strategist at Bank of East Asia, Hong Kong. The talks left key issues, like chip exports, unaddressed, leaving room for conflicts in the future, and no one knows for how long the current truce will last, he added. Chinese markets have been struggling to recover from trade shocks for the past two months after Trump announced sweeping tariffs on April 2 that threatened the global trade system. The CSI 300 Index has barely eked out any gains since then, while the Hang Seng Index has climbed 3.5 percent, but the two are underperforming the nearly 10 percent bounce in the MSCI World Index . The market is less sensitive to trade talks and investors are shifting focus to economic fundamentals, Wang Zhuo, partner at Zhuozhu Investment, said. "The key for China now is to bolster manufacturers' confidence and break the deflationary trend." (Reuters/Xinhua)
