PAK vs BAN, 1st T20I: Pakistan, Bangladesh look to future with T20 World Cup on horizon
Next year's T20 World Cup is in sight as a new-look Pakistan under Mike Hesson hosts a young Bangladesh team in Lahore in three T20Is from Wednesday.
The 2009 world champion Pakistan, has endured a significant downturn in the last 12 months and crashed out in the first round of the World Cup in 2024.
It has won only three of its last 13 T20Is, two against minnows Zimbabwe, and slumped to eighth in the T20I rankings.
With a new head coach in New Zealand's Hesson Pakistan is looking to younger players with the World Cup in India and Sri Lanka just eight months away.
Star batsmen Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, and pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi, have all been axed.
Salman Agha will lead the side, having lost a series in New Zealand 4-1 two months ago.

'We've been really clear around the style of play we want and then it's about picking players that can do that,' Hesson, who coached New Zealand from 2012-2018, said.
'We've got a good number of T20Is between now and the World Cup.
'We will develop a depth of squad playing the way we want and the rankings will come in time because it is about the way we want to play.'
Bangladesh, ranked ninth, is in the same boat.
It has won just four of its last 12 T20Is and lost series against lower-ranked United States (2024) and United Arab Emirates earlier this month.
It also has a new coach in West Indian Phil Simmons, who will be missing senior players including Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, Mohammad Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim, all either fully retired or from the T20Is.
'We're aiming to improve our cricket by performing well in this series,' said Simmons, who took over in October.
Frontline fast bowlers Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman are nursing injuries while new pace sensation Nahid Rana withdrew from the tour over security fears following the cross-border conflict between India and Pakistan.
The conflict put the tour in doubt but Bangladesh finally agreed to play three T20Is instead of the scheduled five.
The remaining matches are on Friday and Sunday, also in Lahore.

IPL 2025 final: Irfan Pathan takes jibe at Virat Kohli for
New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has classified Royal Challengers Bengaluru's icon Virat Kohli's strike rate on a benign Ahmedabad surface in the IPL 2025 final against Punjab Kings as 'disappointing.' Virat played the anchor's role for the majority of the first innings but failed to convert it into a substantial score. RCB struggled to find its power-hitting mojo in the middle overs and required firepower to shift the momentum in their favour. For the majority of the time, Virat struggled to find a way to escape Punjab's short-ball ploy before returning on 43 from 35 deliveries. Irfan wasn't pleased with Virat's 122.86 strike rate, considering how the pitch played out and the amount of time he spent on the field. 'They kept bowling short and slow balls to Virat Kohli. Strike rate of 123 after 35 balls on this pitch is disappointing,' Irfan wrote on X. The 36-year-old showed signs of replicating his 2024 T20 World Cup final heroics. He tried to take on Azmatullah Omarzai but top-edged his pull and deposited it back into the hands of the bowler. Despite his underwhelming display in the final, Virat racked up three boundaries to shatter the record for the most fours in IPL's history. His tally soared to 771 fours, dethroning former opener Shikhar Dhawan from the summit, who had a staggering tally of 768 under his belt. Following his dismissal, the 36-year-old batting maestro ended his campaign with 657 runs in 15 matches and innings at an average of 54.75, with a strike rate of 144.71, with eight fifties. His best score this season is 73*. It took a brisk approach from the middle-order to notch up cracking shots and power RCB to 190/9. Still, Arshdeep Singh (3/40) and Kyle Jamieson's (3/48) sizzling three-wicket hauls denied Bengaluru a 200-run mark. (ANI)

IFAB updates laws on penalty kicks after Alvarez's UCL incident: Rule-change explained
The laws of football on taking a penalty kick were clarified on Tuesday after Julián Álvarez's accidental double touch helped to eliminate Atletico Madrid from the Champions League. What is the update? The update published by FIFA-backed rules panel IFAB means the kind of penalty Átletico forward Álvarez had disallowed after scoring in a shootout against Real Madrid in March should now be retaken. Álvarez slipped and kicked the ball against his standing left foot in the shootout in the Champions League round of 16. The laws of football relating to the penalty kick and penalty shootout were seen as correctly applied in Madrid in March, though too vaguely worded. The incident was widely judged to have been unfair as Álvarez did not deliberately slip and take the double touch to gain an advantage. What did IFAB say? 'This situation is rare, and as it is not directly covered in Law 14, referees have understandably tended to penalize the kicker,' IFAB said in a statement. 'However, this part of Law 14 is primarily intended for situations where the penalty taker deliberately touches the ball a second time before it has touched another player.' IFAB clarified in a circular letter to football stakeholders that a penalty kick, which is scored now after an accidental double touch, should be retaken. ALSO READ: England coach Tuchel expects players to suffer in World Cup heat A double-touch penalty that is not scored will not be retaken. In a shootout, such a penalty 'is recorded as missed,' IFAB said, and during regulation time or extra time, a free kick can be awarded to the defending team. The clarified rule will apply at the Club World Cup, which starts on June 14 in the United States. The 32-team lineup includes Atletico. IFAB is comprised of FIFA plus the four British football federations. Rules can be changed with six of the eight votes, which are distributed by four to FIFA and one each to the British.
