Roomy and fun to drive: MotorTrend says these are the best cars and SUVs for golfers
Picture this: You're all set for a day of golf with your friends, but as you pop open your new car's trunk, you realize your clubs just won't squeeze in there.
Or maybe this happens when you're picking up a rental car for a golf getaway and find yourself struggling to fit both your clubs and luggage into the limited space.
It's a scenario that hits closer to home for some of us than you might imagine. Given the habit many MotorTrend staffers have of switching cars frequently, sometimes even multiple times a week, we've become firsthand experts on which cars are champions at accommodating golf bags.
We've tried everything from squeezing clubs into the front seat to unpacking bags just to make them fit.
So what makes a vehicle perfect for golfers? We could just look up trunk dimensions, but we're also enthusiasts who appreciate cars that are a joy to drive.
Even if your swing doesn't always match your steering precision, these vehicles will deliver you and your clubs to the first tee in style and comfort.
2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE450 Coupe
There is a lot to say about stylish coupes and their space, but Mercedes-Benz nailed the balance with the CLE450 Coupe. They've managed to create a two-door that's roomy enough for your squad and their gear. The trunk offers a generous 14.8 cubic feet of space, which is even more than the outgoing C-Class Coupe. Mercedes says you can fit three golf bags in there, but we think that might be pushing it. Realistically, you can comfortably squeeze in two golf bags along with other essentials, like a cooler stocked with cold drinks for the round.
Under the hood, it packs a punchy 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six pushing out 375 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. It has plenty of power for those spirited drives, yet the ride remains comfortable enough for those longer trips to the course. Even with the engine purring (augmented through the speakers), the cabin stays quiet and loaded with top-notch amenities. Ever tried massaging seats? They're a game changer, especially when you need your back in top shape for every swing.
2024 Audi A6 Allroad
Wagons are famous for their spacious cargo areas and great driving dynamics, and the Audi A6 Allroad lives up to that reputation. It boasts a generous 30 cubic feet of cargo space, enough to comfortably fit all the gear for your foursome. Need even more room? Folding down the second-row seats dramatically expands the cargo capacity.
Behind the wheel, the Allroad is a delight. Its 3.0-liter V-6 engine cranks out 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, paired with a smooth seven-speed transmission that efficiently channels power to all four wheels. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 5 seconds flat, which is pretty respectable. It isn't as sporty as the hotter RS6 Avant (another great choice if you can afford it), but the Allroad still offers a fun driving experience and, more important, ensures you and your buddies arrive at the golf course right on schedule.
2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI
The Volkswagen Golf GTI might not be the ultimate golfer's car, but its name certainly seems to evoke the sport. (In actuality, its name is derived from the German word for the Gulf Stream.) And it doesn't stop there—this hatchback draws inspiration from golf in some clever ways. Take, for instance, its iconic plaid seats, a nod to Scotland, the birthplace of golf. Plus, if you opt for the manual transmission (quick! It goes away for 2025!), you'll notice the shifter adorned with a golf ball dimple pattern on the back. And let's not forget the quirky touch of some models featuring a huge golf ball puddle light.
Having spent ample time behind the wheel of the 2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI and making frequent trips to the golf course, we've found the trunk spacious enough to squeeze in our largest golf bag. However, fitting multiple bags without folding down the second-row seats? Not happening. But hey, after taking it for a spin and experiencing its zippy 2.0-liter engine cranking out 242 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, you might not mind the trade-off. Plus, its compact size makes it a breeze to maneuver into those tight parking spots at the club.
2024 Honda CR-V
Looking for something more mainstream? The 2024 Honda CR-V isn't the flashiest SUV out there, but when it comes to getting to the golf course comfortably, it's hard to beat. Its spacious cabin and cargo area make it a standout in its class, boasting a generous 39.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Plus, with 41.0 inches of legroom in the back, your entire foursome will ride in comfort.
Beyond space, the CR-V is a solid all-around SUV. It's efficient, offering up to 34 mpg on the highway, though its 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque aren't the most thrilling figures compared to other vehicles on this list. However, it's plenty capable for everyday driving and getting you to your golf game without fuss. For those prioritizing fuel economy, the CR-V Hybrid ups the ante with up to 43 mpg, though cargo space does shrink slightly to 36.3 and 34.7 cubic feet for the Sport and Sport Touring models.
2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid
If you're looking for a family car that can handle your golf outings, the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid is a solid choice. Although it isn't the largest SUV in its class, its hybrid engine and three rows provide ample space for both your kids and your golf gear. It's ideal for dropping off the kids before heading to the country club or driving to the range.
On the road, the Grand Highlander Hybrid, equipped with the hybrid Max engine, accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in a respectable 5.9 seconds, impressive for a three-row SUV. Safety-wise, it earned the Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, making it one of the safest SUVs on the market. With 57.9 cubic feet of cargo space when the third row is folded down, the Grand Highlander Hybrid easily accommodates your entire foursome and their golf bags. It strikes a good balance between family-friendly features and utility for your golfing needs.
2024 Toyota 4Runner
Sure, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner isn't the newest kid on the block, but it's still a top pick for golfers. With its two-row setup, it offers a spacious 47.2 cubic feet of cargo space—more than enough room for four golf bags. While the second-row legroom isn't the most generous, passengers will still find it comfortable enough.
As an iconic off-road vehicle, the 4Runner might not immediately scream "golf outing," but its rugged appearance and roomy cabin make a compelling case. Wanna reach in and grab something out of that trunk without opening the tailgate, like, say, a cold snack from a cooler? You can roll down the rear glass for easy access. Its off-road capabilities add a unique flair that stands out in the country club parking lot. If you're looking for a reliable ride that can handle both the greens and the dirt trails, the 4Runner has you covered.

2024 Genesis GV80
Genesis has made a name for itself in the golf world, hosting events like the Genesis Invitational and Genesis Scottish Open. It's clear the brand wants golfers to consider its cars, and the Genesis GV80 is a prime example of why. This luxury SUV offers the style, comfort, and space you and your golfing partners need for your trips to the course.
While its 36.5 cubic feet of cargo space doesn't top the charts, Genesis ensures golfers are taken care of—every car it builds can fit at least one golf bag. In the GV80, you can snugly fit four bags, though it might get a bit cozy at that point. Plus, with 38.7 inches of legroom in the second row, there's ample space for your companions to travel in comfort.
2024 BMW X5
If you're a fan of Netflix's Full Swing docuseries, you've probably noticed a lot of professional golfers behind the wheel of BMWs. That's thanks to the brand's sponsorship. The 2025 BMW X5 stands out as one of BMW's top SUVs, blending style, comfort, and an enjoyable driving experience. It offers a spacious 33.9 cubic feet of cargo capacity, making it perfect for stowing your clubs and luggage for a road trip with your partner.
Under the hood, there are three powertrain options, ranging from 375 horsepower to a robust 617 horsepower, ensuring there's an X5 to match your driving preferences. The X5 plug-in hybrid, with 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, strikes a nice balance with its impressive electric-only range of up to 40 miles. It's no wonder the X5 is a favorite SUV among pro golfers who appreciate arriving at the country club in both comfort and style.
2024 Lexus TX
Lexus is a major sponsor of the U.S. Open, and it is targeting golfers with the new three-row TX—an SUV designed with spaciousness and comfort in mind, ideal for golfing enthusiasts. The Lexus TX blends sporty performance with premium luxury, offering gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid powertrains to cater to different preferences.
Folding down the third row significantly boosts cargo space, expanding from 20.1 cubic feet to a generous 57.4 cubic feet. Although the TX was crafted as a family vehicle, its versatility shines on the golf course, providing ample legroom and cargo capacity to comfortably accommodate a full foursome with plenty of room to spare. It's a savvy choice for those seeking both flexibility and sophistication as they head out for a day of golf.
2024 Audi SQ8
If you're into fastback, high-performance SUVs, the Audi SQ8 should be at the top of your list. Despite its sleek roofline, Audi's flagship SUV offers plenty of space for your friends and their golf clubs. With 30.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity, you'll never need to wonder whether your gear will fit. Need more space? Cargo capacity doubles when you fold the second row.
The Q8 is a favorite among country club members for good reason—it combines spaciousness, cutting-edge technology, and undeniable style. Its luxurious interior feels like first class, and if you opt for the SQ8 with its 4.0-liter V-8 engine, you'll enjoy a robust 500 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque. For those craving even more power, the RS Q8 ramps up to 591 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, propelling it from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. It's no wonder golfers find the Q8 irresistible.
2024 Ford Bronco Sport
Looking for something compact yet spacious? The Ford Bronco Sport fits the bill. Beyond its stylish design and impressive powertrain options, the Bronco Sport offers a generous 36.9 inches of legroom in the back seat and 32.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity—enough to comfortably fit at least three golf bags. Need more room? Folding down the rear seats expands the cargo space to a capacious 65.2 cubic feet.
Starting at $31,230 for the Big Bend trim, the 2024 Ford Bronco Sport delivers ample value. With a 1.5-liter turbo-four engine that pumps out 181 horsepower and 190 lb-ft of torque, the compact SUV doesn't feel too shabby. If you're after more power, opt for the 2.0-liter turbo-four with 250 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque, which can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.5 seconds—a performance boost that adds to its appeal for golfers and adventure seekers alike.
2024 BMW i7
BMW's flagship electric sedan may divide opinions with its distinctive looks, but its performance is undeniably impressive. The 2024 BMW i7's interior is opulently appointed with luxurious materials that exude a regal feel, and every seat offers a massage function—a welcome relief for any golfer's sore back after a round.
The i7's cargo capacity is limited to 11.4 cubic feet, making it more suitable for those who store their clubs at the country club, but it can still accommodate at least one golf bag. The real standout feature, however, is the spacious 42.8 inches of legroom in the back seats, ensuring that every passenger rides in comfort. With its luxurious amenities and ample space for passengers, the i7 could very well become a favorite among your golfing foursome despite its compact cargo capacity.

Lewis Hamilton issues defiant message to F1 media amid quit rumours: ‘Stop making up stuff'
Lewis Hamilton offered a strong message to the world's media in Canada on Thursday, amid speculation the 40-year-old may retire at the end of the current season. Hamilton, who joined Ferrari in the off-season after 12 years and six world titles at Mercedes, is yet to record a podium in the first nine grands prix of the 2025 season. The seven-time world champion is currently sixth in the championship standings, trailing championship leader Oscar Piastri by 115 points. It has led to speculation in some quarters that Hamilton, who is on a two-year contract, may decide to call it a day at the end of this season, despite a regulation change in 2026. Yet Hamilton has dismissed those rumours out of hand. 'To everyone that's writing stories of me considering not racing, I literally only just started, my first year here with Ferrari and I'm here for several years,' he said, ahead of this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix. 'I'm here for the long haul. So, there is no question about where my head is at and what I'm working towards achieving with this team. 'There's zero doubts. So, please stop making up stuff.' Ferrari's underwhelming start has also led to suggestions team principal Fred Vasseur could be removed from his role, with Red Bull's Christian Horner and Ferrari WEC (World Endurance Championship) boss Antonello Coletta linked with the job. But Hamilton, who worked with Vasseur in junior formula prior to his F1 debut in 2007, came out staunchly in his defence of the Frenchman. 'It's definitely not nice to hear that there are stories like that that are out there,' Hamilton said. 'Firstly, I love working with Fred. Fred's the main reason I'm in this team and got the opportunity to be here, which I'm forever grateful for. 'We're in this together. We're working hard in the background. Things aren't perfect but for me, as I said, I'm here to work with the team, but also with Fred. 'I want Fred here. I do believe Fred is the person to take us to the top.' Hamilton will be eyeing an improved showing after a disappointing sixth-place finish in Spain last time out, at a circuit in Montreal where he won his first F1 race in 2007.

Mercedes F1 hoping to reset at the Canadian Grand Prix after ‘challenging' triple-header
Formula 1's triple-header, which brought the grid from Italy to Monaco and finally Barcelona, was not kind to Mercedes. They entered the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix sitting second in the F1 Constructors' Championship standings, behind only McLaren, thanks to a strong start to the season from George Russell and a promising beginning to Kimi Antonelli's F1 career. But the team banked only 18 points over the triple-header, as Antonelli was held without a point over the three races. Advertisement Now Mercedes is looking to reset after a 'challenging' trio of races at this week's Canadian Grand Prix. 'We're eager to get back on track in Montreal after a challenging triple header,' said Team Principal Toto Wolff in the team's media preview of the Canadian Grand Prix. 'We showed an improved performance in Barcelona and that is something for us to build on. However, we know we need to be more consistent, and continue to make progress with the W16, if we are to rediscover some of our form from earlier in the season.' Wolff also paid tribute to the host city, while noting the team's success in Montreal a season ago. Russell took pole position, posting the exact same time as Max Verstappen in Q3. With Russell posting the time first, he secured pole position for the Grand Prix. 'We enjoyed a strong race here in 2024, and I hope we can repeat that level of performance this time round. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a great track with its mix of low-speed corners and long straights often creating an exciting race. Montreal is a superb host city for F1 too and the fans always create a brilliant atmosphere,' added Wolff. Advertisement This week also sees the return of F1 Academy, with Mercedes driver Doriane Pin aiming to climb to the top of the F1 Academy Drivers' standings. Thanks in part to a win in the second race at the Chinese Grand Prix, Pin enters this race week second in the standings, just one point behind Maya Weug. 'We're looking forward to seeing Doriane racing once again as F1 Academy returns to action,' added Wolff. 'She has put in some strong performances so far this year and we will be supporting her as she looks to challenge for the lead of the championship in Canada.' The Canadian Grand Prix kicks off Friday with two hours of practice before Saturday's important qualifying session.
