Aphasia advocates help share message

The difficulties experienced by people living with aphasia are being spotlighted this month, as New Zealand marks Aphasia Awareness Month.
Aphasia is a disorder of communication, where speaking, reading, writing and/or understanding language is impacted.
Dunedin-based Aphasia New Zealand community aphasia adviser and speech language therapist Meryl Jones said many people in the community did not know what aphasia actually was, despite 29,000 New Zealanders living with the condition.
Aphasia is caused by damage to the language centre in the brain (usually in the left hemisphere), most commonly due to stroke — about one-third of people who have a stroke will experience aphasia.
Brain injury, tumour and infection can also result in aphasia, which affects each person differently.
Ms Jones said aphasia was a difficult concept for the general population, resulting in people with aphasia often withdrawing from social contact.
The situation was summed up by the saying "until you've met it, you just don't get it", she said.
"So, we are working to raise community awareness of aphasia and its impact on people's lives," she said.
People with aphasia had difficulties with communicating, but this did not mean their cognitive abilities were impaired, making it extremely frustrating.
"Because of the very nature of aphasia, it is difficult for people living with it to advocate for themselves," Ms Jones said.
"People with aphasia say they would like people to be more patient and to give them time to get out what they want to say — rather than making assumptions or finishing their sentences for them," Ms Jones said.
"Other people can help by adapting their own communication and getting to know the person with aphasia's own way of communicating."
For therapists, the aim was to give people with aphasia a functional way of communicating, using their strengths, which may include non-verbal strategies, such as gestures.
"We also try to educated the people around them, training up their communication partners to give them the right support.
"A major goal for us is to support people with aphasia to participate in life."
Ms Jones works with a group of Dunedin people who have aphasia through a Korero Club, which meets fortnightly on Tuesdays to enjoy face-to-face conversation.
"We have had great friendships formed among the group, with some describing it as the highlight of their week," she said.
There is also the Dunedin Aphasia Support Group, a community support group for people with aphasia and their partners, families, whanau and/or carers, which meets on Fridays in Mornington. This group can be contacted via facebook.

By Victor Waters of RNZ Pharmac says it's exploring ways to extend a free meningoccocal B vaccine programme, with an estimated 100,000 eligible pre-schoolers still not protected. Meningitis prevention advocates have pressured health officials to continue the campaign, which is due to end on August 31. Pharmac pharmaceuticals director Geraldine MacGibbon said Pharmac funds the meningococcal B vaccine for all children under the age of one. "In March 2023, Pharmac funded a catch-up programme for children under the age of five to better protect young New Zealanders from meningococcal B. "We understand that people are keen to see the catch-up period extended and we are actively exploring options for this." "We will keep interested groups, including the Meningitis Foundation, informed about any updates," MacGibbon said. According to the Meningitis Foundation Aotearoa New Zealand, meningococcal bacteria can cause meningococcal meningitis - inflammation of the meninges, the membrane lining of the brain and spinal cord - and/or septicaemia (blood poisoning). Foundation chair Gerard Rushton said the meningococcal B vaccination programme was initiated after a submission the foundation made to Parliament and an application to Pharmac. He said more than 400,000 doses were given out in the first 12 months of the campaign. "We're calling on Health New Zealand and the government to actually continue this programme, because we know it works. We know it will save lives. "We know it's going to take pressure off the already-stretched health system. "What we're saying is this campaign has been very successful and it's been proven that people want it, but there's still 100,000 of our tamariki that haven't been protected, so we're calling them to keep this programme going. "We're really concerned that this large sector of our community are going to miss out. The vaccination rates for our young are still far too low, but we need them to extend this programme, because we need to protect those 100,000 of our children who are still unvaccinated." A Health New Zealand spokesperson said it was are "responsible for the implementation of the programme". "Pharmac funds the meningococcal B catch-up programme and set the timeframe from 1 March 2023 to 31 August 2025." A Health New Zealand spokesperson said, as of 9 June 2025, 84 percent of eligible children under 15 months had at least one dose of the meningococcal B vaccine. "Whānau can access the meningococcal B vaccines from a range of places, including general practice, hauora Māori and Pacific providers, with many Wellchild Tamariki Ora Services, including Whānau Āwhina Plunket, offering immunisations. "There are also more than 122 pharmacies now offering the vaccine for children aged from three years. "The meningococcal B vaccination is a part of the national immunisation schedule. "As a part of the Government's Health Target, we are focused on lifting childhood immunisation rates and we are making good progress towards this goal," said the spokesperson. Meningitis Foundation Aotearoa New Zealand chair Gerard Rushton said his organisation didn't see a reason for the catch-up programme to be discontinued. "Māori and Pasifika are 4-5 times more likely to catch meningitis than the European population, so they are a higher risk at the moment. We struggle to understand why there's a vaccination programme at the moment that actually discriminates against them. "The full vaccination programme was that the babies are free, there was a catch-up programme for 13-month to 5-year-olds, and that first-year students in boarding schools, halls of residence, barracks or prisons could get it free." "We feel that discriminates against the biggest at-risk group we've got, which is our Māori and Pasifika, because they're under-represented at halls of residence and boarding schools," he said.

Press Release – New Zealand Government Minister of Health Health Minister Simeon Brown has today announced funding for the first stage of a major project to upgrade and expand interventional radiology services at Auckland City Hospital. 'This project will significantly improve access to radiology services for patients across Auckland and beyond,' Mr Brown says. 'A $41.2 million investment will fund the initial phase of the project – including construction of a fourth interventional neuroradiology operating theatre equipped with state-of-the-art imaging technology and enhanced support services. 'Investing in modern health infrastructure is a priority for this Government to ensure New Zealanders can access timely, high-quality care when they need it. 'The existing interventional radiology facility is outdated and no longer suitable for the advanced imaging equipment clinicians need. Redesigning the space will enable the use of modern technology and support more sophisticated models of care that meet the increasing complexity of patient needs over the coming decade.' The expansion, expected to be operational by early 2027, will significantly boost capacity for emergency stroke interventions and complex neuroradiology procedures – including specialist treatments for children from across the country. Stage 1 will also deliver: A replacement fluoroscopy room An interventional ultrasound room A new biplane imaging machine An expanded short-stay ward The funding will also support development of a second business case to fully complete a new, purpose-built interventional radiology suite – strengthening services not only for Auckland, but for patients nationwide who require advanced interventional care. 'This project will help reduce wait times for interventional radiology procedures, which play a critical role in diagnosing and treating life-threatening conditions and guiding decisions for further specialist care. 'Better access to interventional radiology means faster diagnoses, less invasive treatments, and improved outcomes for patients,' Mr Brown says.

Press Release – PSA The National GeoHazard Monitoring Centre, operated by GNS Science, provides round the clock monitoring of potential tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides, and was set up after the Kaikoura Earthquake in 2016. The centre providing 24/7 monitoring of geohazards will have to close at times as Government cuts force the centre workforce to be cut to the bone. The National GeoHazard Monitoring Centre, operated by GNS Science, provides round the clock monitoring of potential tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides, and was set up after the Kaikoura Earthquake in 2016. Last year GNS Science announced plans to cut a quarter of the 20 strong team of Geohazard Analysts by attrition following funding cuts. Yesterday, with 18 of the team left, it called for voluntary redundancies and indicated that forced redundancies could follow if sufficient voluntary redundancies are not agreed. 'Cutting the team to the bone means there is a high chance the centre will close at times when a team member falls sick or is unavailable for whatever reason – how is this keeping New Zealanders safe?' said Fleur Fitzsimons, National Secretary for the Public Service Association for Te Pūkenga Here Tikanga Mahi. Analysts work in teams of four, that is falling to three, but there must be at least two on each monitoring shift raising the risk of the centre closing due to staff absences. 'The Government needs to explain to New Zealanders why it views that this service is not as important as it was two years ago, before its funding cuts. 'Geohazard Analysts play a critical role in reviewing earthquake measurements to determine things like the magnitude and location of earthquakes and provide science advice to our emergency management services. 'The Government's decisions mean that this critical information may not be available to emergency management in times of need when lives are at risk. This is reckless for a country so vulnerable to geohazard risks like earthquakes and eruptions. 'This government does not value the role of science as we have seen with more than 400 jobs cuts throughout the sector, and a restructure announced this year with no new funding. 'The undermining of the National GeoHazard Monitoring Centre is yet another sad example of the Government's short-sighted cuts that we have seen across the public sector with little regard to the impacts on New Zealanders.' Background In September last year GNS Science announced plans to axe 59 roles, 10% of its workforce following Government funding cuts. The cuts shocked the international science community – 85 scientists from seven countries wrote an open letter to the Government stating that the cuts risk 'compromising essential geoscientific expertise and partnerships needed to address geohazards risks, which is critical for a country whose economy and community safety is so vulnerable to earthquakes, volcanoes, and climate change'.
