Support for NSW flood victims

Andy Park: The Prime Minister has announced further flood support for the mid north coast of NSW, including deploying defence personnel to help with the clean up. Over the next few days, getting food and water into communities cut off by floods will be a major priority. But the Weather Bureau is also warning that more wet weather could hamper the clean up effort. Bridget Fitzgerald reports.
Bridget Fitzgearald: For the second time in four years, Josh Hack has watched his friends and neighbours do their best to manage a devastating flood.
Josh Hack: They'll say they're OK, but they're all broken and they need their help.
Bridget Fitzgearald: The Taree farmer and agronomist says the scale of the flood caught many by surprise.
Josh Hack: We're all planning for the flood. We're all planning for, you know, the worst case scenario, 2021, you know, one in 100 year flood, surely we're not going to get two in four years. So, you know, we planned for that. You know, there's farmers that have done things with infrastructure and stuff since then to try and help plan for that. But unfortunately, this was unplannable.
Bridget Fitzgearald: He's counting his losses, but says he's been lucky.
Josh Hack: It's pretty tough for everybody. And I've been very lucky. Like, I get most of my animals. Yes, I've lost some, you know, and some of the ones that I lost are the ones that were probably in the best spot, but they, for whatever reason, decided to go for a swim, to try to go to a different spot.
Bridget Fitzgerald: In Kempsey, 300 kilometres north of Sydney, restocking critical supplies has been a slow process.
Greg Steele: We just can't get food into them.
Bridget Fitzgearald: Greg Steele is the Kempsey SES unit commander.
Greg Steele: Normally, the resupply wouldn't be quite so difficult. However, we've had a power failure in the CBD, which has obviously spoiled a lot of the a lot of the foods that require refrigeration.
Bridget Fitzgearald: He says work's being done to make sure shops can safely store the supplies. Supermarkets in flood hit towns like Kempsey and Wingham were shut over the weekend, with road closures causing supply delays. Janelle Saffin is the New South Wales recovery minister and minister for the North Coast.
Janelle Saffin: About 12,000 people still remain isolated. So whilst we're going into recovery, there's still a response happening with the SES. There were flood rescues over the last 24 hours. There were 11, 532 calls. So we've got the two things happening at once.
Bridget Fitzgearald: And flood affected communities are set for another wet night. Senior meteorologist Dean Narramore from the Weather Bureau says the rain is more likely to be a frustration rather than a threat.
Dean Narramore: We're only expecting that 10 to 20 millimetres, maybe isolated, 30 to 40 millimetres at most. It's going to move through very quickly, not the hundreds of millimetres that we have seen.
Bridget Fitzgearald: He says strong and gusty winds could cause some property damage and hamper the clean up. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says 70 Defence Force personnel will be deployed to the New South Wales Mid North Coast region.
Anthony Albanese: They will be involved in clean up, in debris removal, in welfare checks and re-establishing critical infrastructure that is so important for these communities.
Bridget Fitzgearald: Anthony Albanese says people in Kempsey, Port Macquarie, Mid Coast and Dungog are eligible for the disaster recovery allowance, which can provide up to 13 weeks of income support. So far, more than 500 properties have been declared uninhabitable. But there are fears thousands more have been seriously damaged or destroyed.
Andy Park: That report from Bridget Fitzgerald and Alison Xiao.

Emergency services mount rescue operation after cars became stuck in heavy snow at Mount Hotham

More than a dozen people have been rescued from Victoria's Mount Hotham, after several cars became stuck about 10:30pm last night due to heavy snowfall. Victoria Police and SES members from Bright and Falls Creek are carrying out the rescue operation near Dargo High Plains Road. Thirteen people have been rescued so far, but the SES said it was believed about 20 people in total had been stuck, with the operation ongoing. Police said a man in his 40s was treated for minor injuries after his vehicle rolled."Emergency services spent today using snowmobiles to access those trapped on the mountain after more than 50 centimetres of snow fell in the area this weekend," a police spokesperson said. Snowgoers have been warned to obey road closure signs to allow emergency services to continue searching the area for any others who may be stranded. Dargo Highway Plains Road is closed to traffic due to the extreme weather conditions and is not expected to reopen until after the King's Birthday long weekend. Police have urged people to heed weather warnings, monitor conditions and ensure their vehicles are appropriately equipped for the conditions.

‘Absolutely dumping': More than 40cm of snow kickstarts NSW ski season

Ski resorts across the NSW Snowy Mountains have been blanketed by a whopping 45cm of snow, in a strong start to the official ski season. Perisher ski resort recorded 25cm of fresh snow falling overnight and continuing to fall, bringing the long-weekend total to 45cm. More snow was expected to fall on Sunday across the range, with a north-westerly wind and temperatures topping only -1C. The snowfall comes at a welcome time for the ski resorts after a difficult few years, with Perisher posting on social media that Saturday night was an 'absolutely dumping'. The Bureau of Meteorology was reporting snowfall in the Australian Alps on Sunday above 900m as a high in Western Australia brought strong winds to north NSW. Meanwhile, a cold front was sweeping across southern NSW, with several more fronts expected to follow before a high-pressure ridge settles over NSW next week. The early season dusting was quick to light up social media, with people commenting that it was an 'amazing weekend' and a 'great start' to the ski season. Thredbo ski resort was forecasting a high chance of snow on Monday, with Sunday's dusting having blanketed the ski fields nestled into Mt Kosciuszko. Across the border, Mt Hotham resort reported a whopping 51cm of snow so far a storm there, with 32cm falling in the past 24 hours. Snow was still lightly falling at the resort on Sunday morning, with the temperature dipping to a frigid -3C. The NSW snow season ended earlier for the second year in a row in 2024 after one of the warmest winters on record. The Bureau reported above average winter mean temperatures across the state, in particular in the south and parts of the east coast.

Huge start to Australia ski season as snow dumped on NSW, Victoria

Australia's snow resorts have seen a bumper start to the season as a cold front sweeps through the country's south east, sending temperatures and powder plummeting. Blizzard conditions have hit ski fields in NSW and Victoria over the weekend, bringing the biggest start to the snow season in years. In one clip shared by Hotham Alpine Resort in Victoria, a man can be seen wading through knee-high snow after a massive dump. '51cm storm total,' the resort wrote on social media. 'We're not skipping leg day at Hotham!' In NSW, Thredbo is reporting 26cm on the ground and Perisher's live snow cam shows a peak of around 35cm. 'And just like that, winter 2025 is here!' Thredbo wrote in a post. 'Snow is falling and there's over 50cm in the forecast … let's GO!' Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Jonathon How said overnight snowfall marks being reported included 25cm at Perisher, 32cm at Hotham, 26cm at Buller and 37cm at Falls Creek. 'So really, really big numbers,' he said. Mr How said Perisher, Thredbo and Charlotte Pass could see another 10 to 20cm on Sunday. 'We've got a couple more centimetres to come in Victoria and pretty much anywhere above about 900m will get snow today across the alpine areas.' He said snow was also expected to fall in new areas west of Sydney on Sunday, including parts of the Blue Mountains and Central Tablelands. 'And so we're expecting snow at Oberon. Even orange could get some flurries this afternoon and evening at some of the hills around Lithgow. 'So the snow level (will be) falling to around 800m tonight across the central tablelands.' Colleague Dean Narramore, from the Bureau, said on Saturday that the south east could expect days of low temperatures and heavy snow dumps in Alpine areas. 'Where this cold front has come from, and where it's dragging the air from, is actually well south of Australia,' he said. 'And that's why we're going to see temperatures drop three to give degrees, and daytime highs might not even break out of the single figures in the south east of Australia as we move through Sunday and Monday.' A low pressure system developing off the coast of Victoria would also bring windy conditions and rain, which would fall as snow in the Alpine areas, he said. Weatherzone's Anthony Sharwood predicted on Friday that there could be as much as 70cm of snow falling at high resorts by Tuesday, and up to 30cm at lower resorts.
