‘A moment I'll carry forever': Savoy man summits Mount Everest
KATHMANDU, Nepal (WCIA) — There isn't a mountain within 1,000 miles of Central Illinois, but one man had a dream and a number one goal in life. Earlier this month, he accomplished that goal.
He went from the farmlands of Illinois to the summit of Mount Everest.

Nick Selby grew up in Shelbyville but now calls Savoy his home. It's the exact opposite of the Himalayas: flat vs rugged terrain and fluctuating temperatures vs consistent cold.
Not to mention, Central Illinois is thousands of miles away from the highest point on Earth.
'But somewhere along the way, I started believing. Believing that limits are meant to be tested, and that even someone from the quiet heart of Central Illinois could one day reach the top of the world,' Selby wrote on Facebook. 'This climb wasn't just about altitude. It was about rising above doubt, fear, and the uncertainty life throws your way. Everest tested me in every way — and gave me a moment I'll carry forever.'
Selby reached the summit on May 18 and is now on his way home.

New plaque unveiled to honor Queen's Surf Beach

A brand new plaque was unveiled to celebrate the legacy of Queen's Surf Beach, which has been a meaningful location for many for the past 50 years. Hawaiʻi attorneys, businessman found guilty of wire fraud In 1974, Queen's Surf Beach was the site of the first Pride celebration in Hawaiʻi, and the area has been a popular gathering place for members of Hawaiʻi's LGBTQ+ Māhū communities dating back to the beginning of the 1970s. The plaque is now placed at the base of a tree at Queen's Surf Beach. Queen's Surf was a highly visible area to the public, where locals and visitors alike could meet, relax and be themselves without fear of judgment or dancers and lei makers, volleyball players and roller skaters, musclemen and beauty queens were all welcome at Queen's. 'We are proud to celebrate the importance and the significance of a renowned location like Queen's Surf Beach because these are the places and the stories that make our island home special and unique,' Blangiardi said. 'But more than that, we are proud to be a supportive, welcoming, and loving city for all residents and visitors alike, regardless of their sexuality or gender.' Young County Museum nearing grand opening in new location
GRAHAM (KFDX/KJTL) — It's been a project three years in the making. In just a few months, the Young County Museum of History and Culture will be ready to open its new building. Since 2022, the museum's new home has been undergoing major renovations. Now, with several exhibits already in their new home, the museum's executive director, Chandy Dunnam, is seeing a significant improvement from the old to the new. 'We came from such a small, condensed area of a kind of trial area, and now we are in this 6,000 square foot building that we can fill up already, probably,' Dunnam said. One big boost, Dunnam said, is the flexibility the new space allows for. In the museum's main room, Dunnam said there will be a clear, walkable timeline of Young County's history, which is most dense around the mid-to-late 1800s. 'We have a lot of stuff jam-packed into that time, and it kind of gets confusing,' Dunnam said. 'So, we're going to have a timeline to help people understand it.' Those who visited the museum's old building might remember the cramped individual rooms, with wagons and cars located in a barn-like room at the back. Now, with more space, museum treasurer Shannon Potts said that those big displays, like the wagons, can be displayed openly for everyone to see. 'It's open. We can add more exhibits to them,' Potts said. 'We can add more signage to let people know a little more, instead of just having to stand there and tell them what it is.' The museum is also preparing to introduce new attractions with its vast space. Potts said one room will be a 2,000-book library, which will allow guests to conduct research into various levels of history concerning the Young County area. 'Today, we already had three different people come in looking for stories on their families,' Potts said. 'And so that is the purpose. One of the purposes that we really, really want to help with.' But even with the extra space, Dunnam said there is only so much of Young County's history that can be displayed at a time. Though they can't display everything at once, museum staff are already planning some seasonal exhibit rotations. 'We also already feel like we've already outgrown this building,' Dunnam said. 'But we already realized that we are going to have to pick and choose, which is hard to do.' Regardless of what's on display, by Labor Day weekend, more chapters of Young County history will be on display than ever before. Although the expansion is progressing well and staff are excited about the museum's future, it still requires some additional support. Grindstone Lake restocked with rainbow trout
RUIDOSO, N.M. (KRQE) – A ruidoso lake that was used to put out the Paradise Fire last week is being restocked with rainbow trout. The Grindstone Lake was supplied with 600 pounds of trout on Wednesday. The Village of Ruidoso Parks and Recreation Department said the trout can get up to 20 inches. Increases to some taxes and fees in New Mexico go into effect on July 1 According to the village's website, camping at Grindstone Lake is closed indefinitely for the summer season, but day fishing is still allowed.
