Avera honors hundreds of cancer survivors
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It's National Cancer Survivors Day, and to celebrate, Avera spent the day honoring patients who beat the odds.
Biking 4,000 miles to help homeless veterans
Hundreds of cancer survivors came out the the Prairie Center in Sioux Falls where they enjoyed a free meal and a superhero theme. It's the 15th time Avera has hosted the event.
Survivors say it was helpful for them to be around people who know exactly what they went through.
'The thought of being with other survivors because sometimes it kind of feel like you're alone in this whole journey. Just to see that other people that have survived, too, is going to be kind of cool,' cancer survivor Terri Vanden Bosch said.
'Their lives are essentially flipped upside down, and unless we've been in those shoes, we just honestly don't necessarily understand that,' Avera certified nurse practitioner Jennifer Reiner said.
The survivors also got to add their names to a survivor tree painting and listen to guest speakers.
