Dramatic twist emerges after Aussie was deported from the US under Trump's tough immigration policy - as Homeland Security 'fact checks' real reason she was stopped at the airport
Homeland Security has defended its actions for deporting an an Aussie woman after she was detained, stripped and held overnight in a federal prison while trying to visit her American husband.
Former NSW police officer Nikki Saroukos, 25, was detained by US border officials upon entering the country via Honolulu, Hawaii on May 17.
The 25-year-old thought it would be a routine visit to see her husband who has been stationed as a US Army lieutenant on the Pacific island and US state since August, 2023.
Mrs Saroukos had successfully visited the Hawaii three times in recent months an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) under the Visa Waiver Program.
At no point was she given a reason for her detention, beyond the fact that border officials did not believe her story that she was visiting her husband.
Mrs Saroukos said she was 'treated like a criminal' as she was denied her rights, subject to invasive searches, humiliating treatment and a night in a federal detention facility before being deported back to Australia.
However, The US Department of Homeland Security has fired back at Mrs Sourokos' claims in a post shared to X on Saturday.
The department described the post as a 'fact check' and defended its officers who determined Mrs Saroukos was 'travelling for more than just tourism'.
'Nicolle Saroukos's recent long-term trips to the United States and suspicious luggage resulted in her being reasonably selected for secondary screening by CBP,' it read.
Officials did not believe her story that she was visiting her husband after claiming she had packed more clothing than was necessary for a three-week stay.
'Officers determined that she was traveling for more than just tourism. She was unable to remember her wedding date just four months prior,' the post read.
Saroukos met her now-husband during a trip on December 13, 2024, the same day her ex-partner left her. The two spent only eight days together before she returned to Australia on December 21.
'Saroukos then got married on January 24, 2025, after only knowing her husband for just over a month.'
The department also accused her of having 'unusual activity on her phone' and making false claims about her husband's military service.
'During screening, CBP (Customs and Border Protection) noted there was unusual activity on her phone, including 1000 deleted text messages from her husband because she claimed they caused her "anxiety",' the post read.
'Saroukos even claimed that her husband was going to leave the US military, despite him telling CBP he was adding her to his military documents.
'If you attempt to enter the United States under false pretenses, there are consequences.'

Big East Conference is moving its headquarters to the Empire State Building
The Big East conference is moving its headquarters to the Empire State Building. The league is moving from the East Side of Manhattan, where it has been for about a decade, to the 102-story Art Deco skyscraper 12 blocks away. The new office will feature almost 8,000 square feet of space and put the conference even closer to Madison Square Garden, where it has held its men's basketball tournament for the past 43 years. 'We are very excited to move to the Empire State Building, one of the most iconic buildings in the world,' Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman said. 'This move also strengthens our historic ties to New York City and further positions our conference at the center of the sports, business, and media worlds.' ___

Musk tears into Trump's mega-bill
Published: | Updated: Elon Musk went nuclear on President Donald Trump 's big, beautiful bill on Tuesday, calling it 'a disgusting abomination' and condemning lawmakers who voted for it. He blasted it for bringing massively increasing 'the already gigantic budget deficit.' 'I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it anymore,' Musk wrote in a post on X. He notably did not use Trump's moniker for the federal spending bill - the president refers to it as 'one big beautiful bill' – but Musk's meaning was clear. 'This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it,' the SpaceX founder noted. He added: 'It will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden America citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt.' White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt downplayed Musk's tweets on the matter, which came live during her press briefing. 'Look the president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill, and it hasn't changed the President's opinion,' she said. 'This is one big, beautiful bill, and he's sticking to it.' Musk previously indicated he was against the bill, which funds the federal government. He said he was concerned it would undo the work of his Department of Government Efficiency. But his comments on Tuesday were his harshest to date and come as the bill is being debated in the Senate. They also come five days after he formally left the Trump administration. The legislation will add about $3.8 trillion to the federal government's $36.2 trillion in debt over the next decade, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. According to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, it will boost the nation's debt by $3.1 trillion. But Trump has defended his signature legislation, arguing it will lower taxes. 'We will take a massive step to balancing our Budget by enacting the largest mandatory Spending Cut, EVER, and Americans will get to keep more of their money with the largest Tax Cut, EVER, and no longer taxing Tips, Overtime, or Social Security for Seniors — Something 80 Million Voters supported in November,' Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Monday. And, notably, Trump didn't criticize Musk during a joint press conference with him in the Oval Office on Friday. The president defended his signature legislation but didn't mention Musk. In the past, Trump has attacked others who have criticized him. Musk, the world's richest man, spent $290 million in the last election cycle to help get Trump and Republican candidates elected. Instead Trump said he would negotiate parts of the bill as it makes its way through the legislative process. 'We will be negotiating that bill, and I'm not happy about certain aspects of it, but I'm thrilled by other aspects of it,' Trump told reporters, without directly addressing Musk's concerns. Other administration officials have stood up for the legislation. Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller has been vocal in his defense of the spending plan, a fact that got a lot of attention after his wife Katie Miller left DOGE to work for Elon Musk. 'The Big Beautiful Bill decreases total spending over the budget window by nearly $2 trillion,' Miller wrote on X Sunday. House Republicans passed the legislation last month by a mere one vote. The Senate is expected to amend what the House sent them but those negotiations are ongoing. Trump has said he wants a final version of the legislation on his desk for signature by July 4. Musk, meanwhile, formally left the Trump administration on Friday, holding court with the president in an Oval Office press conference. It was his last day as a special government employee. The Tesla founder sported a black eye during the event, which he said was the result of his son X punching him. But even before he departed the White House Musk made clear his disagreement with the 'big beautiful bill,' which is Trump's signature legislation that funds the government. Musk said he was 'disappointed to see the massive spending bill' because it increases the budget deficit and undermines DOGE. 'I was, like, disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, doesn't decrease it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing,' he told CBS News. I said, 'I actually thought that, when this 'big, beautiful bill' came along, it'd be like, everything he's done on DOGE gets wiped out in the first year.' 'I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful,' Musk added with a laugh. 'But I don't know if it could be both. My personal opinion.' Musk has claimed to save the federal government billions through his DOGE efforts. The 'Big Beautiful Bill' is intended to be an encompassing piece of legislation to allow Trump to move forward with much of his agenda, with policies ranging from tax cuts to immigration . The legislation brings large spending increases that the GOP has fought against in recent years, including raising the debt limit by more than $4 trillion over the next two years. Within the package is about $5 trillion in tax cuts, to be partially funded by repealing or phasing out more quickly the clean energy tax credits passed during Joe Biden's presidency.

Unbelievable secret behind year's 'most terrifying film' Bring Her Back's vomit-inducing scenes
It's been dubbed 'the most terrifying horror film' of the year. Bring Her Back, from Australian directors Danny and Michael Philippou, follows two siblings who find themselves caught up in an occult ritual by their foster mother. The supernatural chiller rattled moviegovers over the weekend, with many claiming that the film's stomach-churning scenes had left them nauseous. One shocking scene sees troubled Ollie, played by 12-year-old child star Jonah Wren Phillips, being fed a piece of fruit on the end of a large knife by his foster brother Andy. When Andy turns his back, Ollie begins voraciously gnawing on the knife in order to satiate a demonic spirit inside of him. As he chews on the razor-sharp blade, blood begins gushing everywhere and his teeth begin to crack and become dislodged. In another scene, the demon completely takes over Ollie's body and he begins trying to eat everything in sight, including the edge of a wooden table that immediately splinters and starts tearing into the child's face. Explaining the secrets behind both horrific scenes, prosthetic FX designer Larry Van Duynhoven told Variety that they used a set of prosthetic teeth and added some chocolate to the prop table to disguise the taste for Phillips, who plays Ollie. 'He was able to really go to town because we had the dentures that helped protect his teeth and mouth,' Van Duynhoven said. 'The dental technician designed some breakaway teeth in the dentures, so some of those teeth snap off.' Phillips added, 'They said they put chocolate in it a little bit. I didn't taste it because I had blood in my mouth. It was more of a texture because they hollowed it out so it was really crunchy.' Director Danny Philippou told Polygon, 'The entire table was laced with chocolate, so he enjoyed eating it. He was still munching on it between takes.' For the jaw-dropping knife scene, a rubber prop was used whenever Phillips was present, and then a puppet head whenever they needed to use a real blade. Philippou added, 'We had a [prop replacement for Jonah's head], so we could put a real knife in this fake head and rip his lip.' Bring Her Back opened in US theaters over the weekend, pulling in $7 million. Critics have praised the film so far, while viewers have been left sick by some of the violence and realistic practical effects. 'Bring Her Back made me so nauseous, it was so good,' gushed one fan on X, formerly Twitter. 'Bring Her Back WAS SOOOO GOOD I felt sick watching that scene,' added a second, while a third wrote, 'Bring Her Back is sick. Definitely seeing it again.' A fourth wrote, 'If y'all need a movie to watch this week go see Bring Her Back in theaters. My first time ever a movie made me literally set up to vomit. The plot is crazy too.' Bring Her Back is from the directors of Talk To Me, which is currently the highest-grossing horror film in A24 history. According to the filmmakers, the flick is so scary moviegoers passed out during preview screenings. 'We've had three faintings,' Danny admitted during an interview on Australian talk show The Project. Oscar-nominated English actress Sally Hawkins, 48, known for her roles in Paddington, Wonka and Happy-Go-Lucky, stars in Bring Her Back. Hawkins plays grieving mother Laura, who attempts to bring her daughter back from the dead using a paranormal ritual.
