No Virat Kohli. No Rohit Sharma. No Ravichandran Ashwin.

These three names featured prominently on India's starting Test lineup in recent years and often sent shivers down the opposition.

But the long arm of Father Time tapped them on the shoulder gently and reminded three of the country's greatest players that it's time to call it a day. England must be breathing a sigh of relief as this fearsome threesome will not grace the hallowed England grounds during India's demanding five-Test tour that starts in mid-June.

All eyes now turn to the new-look India squad led by 25-year-old Shubman Gill, who was given the nod ahead of fast-bowler extraordinaire Jasprit Bumrah.
In fact, the majority of fans around the world and pundits were certain Bumrah would succeed Sharma as captain, but the selectors rightly decided the pace man's fitness issues were a concern.

'We would rather have him as a bowler and hope he has a big series,' chief selector Ajit Agarkar said. 'He is an important player for us, so having him fit as a bowler is more important.'

Meanwhile, the 38-year-old Ashwin retired from the five-day version of the game a few months back having taken 537 Test wickets and turned his attention to club cricket. Sharma, of course, will be missed at the top of the order as he accumulated 4,301 runs with 12 centuries and 18 half centuries after making his Test debut in 2013.

The 36-year-old Kohli was urged by the hierarchy to hang on until after the England tour to give Gill all the assistance he would need as he embarks as a new skipper. Kohli was widely regarded as one of the most accomplished batsmen of his generation and a hero to millions of Indian fans. He played 123 Test matches since his debut in 2011, amassing 9,230 runs with an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries and 31 fifties.

Although Gill lacks captaincy experience in Test cricket, he has led his country in a T20 game in Zimbabwe and captains Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League. Gill has appeared in 32 Tests and scored 1,893 runs and that includes five centuries. Gill described his appointment as Test captain as a 'great honour' and 'big responsibility.'

Another superstar Gill will be without on the tour will be opening bowler Mohammad Shami, who played a pivotal role for India in recent years, but a spate of injuries has ruled him out again.

JOE TAKES ROOT After Joe Root gave up his role as England skipper a couple of years ago, he has blossomed into a world-class batsman. Not that he wasn't before that but shedding the captaincy where he was a disaster, Root has now become a force with the bat and he has become the country's leading ODI scorer. He clobbered a brilliant unbeaten 166 to power England to a three-wicket victory over the West Indies in Cardiff. Root, who is also his country's highest run-scorer in Tests, piloted England to 309 for seven with seven balls remaining to overtake the Windies' 308 thanks to a century from Keacy Carty's 103 and half-centuries from Brandon King and Shai Hope. Root surpassed Eoin Morgan's record of 6,957 runs and helped England recover from 93 for four. 'I want to give as much as I can and play for England for as long as I can,'' said the 34-year-old Root. 'Until that desire to turn up and get better every day, to add to the group and be at the end of a chase like that . . . . when that's not a burning desire any more, then it would be time to stop.' Pedestrians and home hit by pellet guns in separate incidents

The London police are investigating four separate incidents that saw pedestrians and a home hit by pellet guns. On May 27 around 7 p.m., officers said a man was seen walking near Viscount and Farnham roads, when a pellet pistol came from the back passenger of a passenger vehicle, shooting the man. The victim was hit multiple times but wasn't hurt. On the same day around 9 p.m., a citizen saw a Dodge Caravan parked on Edmonton Street, allegedly firing suspected pellets from a plastic gun at a home. The van was then seen pulling into a parking lot nearby and the citizen watched three men get out of the vehicle. No damage was reported to the home. Just before 10 p.m., another incident was reported where a pedestrian was hit by a pellet. The caller didn't want police to attend the scene, so it's not known where it took place. The next day, on May 28 around 11:30 a.m., a woman was driving a vehicle in the area of Southdale Road West and Farnham Road, when she said she was shot with a suspected pellet gun by a man in a white SUV. The victim said there were four suspects in the vehicle. The London Police Service said it's not known if the incidents are connected. The investigation into each is ongoing. Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to call the LPS at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Crime Stoppers also accepts reports online.
