Leinster boss Leo Cullen expecting 'whatever it takes' approach from Glasgow Warriors

RTÉ Newsa day ago

Leinster head coach Leo Cullen says Glasgow will show no fear coming to Dublin as they bid to defend their BKT URC title.
The Warriors famously won the championship last season after beating and Munster and Bulls in the semi-final and final, both away from home.
It's not unusual for visiting opposition to put up a token early defence when they come to face Leinster before folding under relentless pressure.
Harlequins and Zebre are examples that stand out in the last two months, while even Glasgow, when they lost their Champions Cup quarter-final 52-0, didn't appear to have the stomach for a fight on that occasion.
However, there is a sense in camp that Franco Smith's team, who beat Stormers 36-18 in the quarter-final last weekend, will come with a completely different attitude for tomorrow afternoon's 2.45pm kick-off at Aviva Stadium (live on RTÉ).
"They won't be afraid, you saw them at the weekend against Stormers, they have that slogan: 'Whatever it Takes', so they certainly push the boundaries," Cullen told reporters after naming a starting side with three changes from the quarter-final win over Scarlets.
"The penalty count was [16] to four [against Glasgow].
"[They are] the reigning champions, they won away last year in Limerick in a semi and went away to win a final.
"We know they'll be hard to handle, tough to play against."

Flanker Josh van der Flier (hamstring) and full-back Hugo Keenan (calf) both miss out through injury, while Dan Sheehan swaps the starting hooker shirt with Rónan Kelleher.
"Josh went off at the weekend so he's not back for this weekend. It's tight. It's coming a little bit too soon," said Cullen of the changes.
"It's coming a little bit too soon for Garry [Ringrose, calf], Hugo has picked up a niggle as well, so he's out.
"We're back to a 5:3 [bench] split as well, again it's just a little bit around the personnel.
"Tommy [O'Brien] has done well to get back, Hugo we didn't think was that significant, he trained on Tuesday but then he started to flag.
"At that point Tommy was coming back into training, so we moved Jimmy [O'Brien] to 15 and Tommy in on the wing.
"Tommy has been excellent for the team all year so I don't think he drops the overall group in anyway.
"With the moving parts at the backs, obviously Josh dropping out as well, we've gone back to a 5:3 because Ciarán [Frawley] came on at 15 for Hugo at the weekend, and he can cover 12 and 15, Ross [Byrne] has been excellent all year for us as well."
Conscious of the fact that Munster lost out to Sharks last weekend after a place-kicking shootout, Cullen hinted that the presence of so many kickers on the bench could come in useful for the game, for which there were almost 15,000 tickets sold by early Friday afternoon.
He said: "I don't know, was the fact that there was a penalty shoot-out in one of the games last week, does that play on our minds as well, stacking the bench with kickers?
"It is a possibility, it is definitely something that needs to be considered.
"Overall Ross has been excellent all year, he's been unlucky to miss out on some of the games the last few weeks because we'd opted to have a 6:2 split prior to that.
"I think both teams are probably missing a few players, that's just the nature of the season, we think there is a good group and we're excited to get going again."

Kerry narrowly overcome a battling Cavan side to reach All-Ireland MFC semi-final

All-Ireland MFC quarter-final: Kerry 0-14 (0-1-12) Cavan 1-9 (1-1-7) Despite dramatic late fade-outs in both halves, a sporadically impressive Kerry did just about enough to advance by the skin of their teeth past Cavan in this Electric Ireland All-Ireland MFC quarter-final at O'Moore Park in Portlaoise. Leading by the bare minimum at half-time, having played with a strong breeze, the Kingdom improved immeasurably in the third quarter and, despite a well-taken goal by the Ulster side's corner-back Matthew Duffy, the Munster champions appeared to gain a semblance of control. With corner-forward Ben Kelliher very prominent, and Tadhg O'Connell and Pádraig Ó Mainnín notching off the bench, Kerry moved five points clear, 0-13 to 1-5, entering the last ten minutes, and looked likely to ease towards the winning post. However, Cavan refused to throw in the towel and, with excellent goalkeeper Cian McConnell moving outfield to telling effect, four points on the trot by the Ulster county left the game right in the melting pot in the closing stages. Kerry were now hanging on for dear life, with the Ulster runners-up giving it everything in search of a last-gasp equaliser but, in an exciting denouement, another Kingdom replacement Liam O'Brien had the final say with the insurance point at the death. With wind advantage in the first half, it was Kerry who made the early running, points from Danny Murphy and Kevin Griffin, followed by a Gearóid White tap-over free, pushing them three clear by the tenth minute. However, it was already clear at this juncture that Cavan were scrounging brilliantly for breaking ball and, with a dominant midfield pairing in Sam Maguire and Faolán Graham, they quickly gained a foothold in the game. The scores didn't come instantly for the Breffni men, with a two-point Griffin placed ball, and a lovely white flag from Kelliher giving the Kingdom a five-point lead by the 18th minute (0-6 to 0-1), Jay Graham with a pointed free for the Ulster side. Amazingly, Kerry would fail to register for the remainder of the half, finishing with nine first half wides in total, as they hit too many long-range hit-and-hope efforts. Growing in self-belief, Cavan were more economical in the second quarter. A booming point by midfielder Graham, added to by a two-point free, and a closer range score, by his namesake, reduced the deficit at half-time (0-6 to 0-5). They would have fancied their chances heading into the resumption, but just came up short as Kerry edged into the last four. Scorers for Kerry: B Kelliher (0-5, 0-2fs), K Griffin (0-3, 1tpf), G White (0-2, 0-1f), D Murphy, T O'Connell, P Ó Mainnín, L O'Brien (0-1 each). Leinster v Glasgow LIVE updates from the URC semi-final at the Aviva Stadium

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the URC semi-final clash of Leinster Rugby versus Glasgow Warriors at the Aviva Stadium. This is the third meeting of the sides this season but things have changed a lot since April 11, when Leinster brushed aside the Warriors 52-0 in the Champions Cup quarter-finals at the same venue and New Zealand star Jordie Barrett turned in one of the best performances ever seen in the ground. That felt like such a massive statement of intent by Leo Cullen's charges but they fell at the next hurdle in Europe when they were shocked by Northampton Saints. The massive question mark hanging over Leinster hasn't budged since then. They struggled to see off Glasgow in the sides' final regular season fixture, also at the Aviva Stadium, and they were lack-lustre in overcoming the Scarlets in the URC quarter-finals last Saturday. Coaches and players from the province say they have readjusted their mindset to more of a knock-out mentality and that all that matters now is winning. Glasgow will take some beating. The Warriors' 13-5 loss to Leinster on May 17 was their third in a row but they rebounded in style by seeing off the Stormers 36-18 in last week's quarter-final. Both sides have some key players missing but this could be a titanic struggle if Leinster can't put distance between the sides early. Kick-off is at 2.30pm.
