Telecom sector shows robust performance in nine months
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's telecom sector continued to show robust performance during the first nine months of fiscal year 2024-25 (July–March), with total revenues reaching Rs 803 billion. However, the sector's contribution to the national exchequer declined to Rs271 billion during the same period, the Economic Survey 2024-25 revealed. While telecom revenues remained strong—up from Rs 644 billion in FY2020-21 to Rs803 billion in the current fiscal year so far—the sector's tax and duty contribution dropped from a high of Rs 341 billion in FY2022-23 to Rs 271 billion during July–March FY2025. Experts attribute the drop to potential shifts in policy measures, reduced tax collection windows due to the data covering only nine months, or changing dynamics in sector profitability. Despite the decline, the telecom sector remains a vital contributor to the economy. Telecom investment also saw a dip, registering USD 621 million in FY2024-25 (July–March), compared to USD 770 million in the previous year and USD 1,657 million in FY2021-22. Despite these financial shifts, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) reported steady expansion in digital infrastructure. Broadband penetration rose to 59.8%, with 4G coverage reaching over 81% of the population. Total broadband subscribers hit 147.2 million by March 2025. The PTA's regulatory reforms, digital inclusion strategies, and initiatives like unlocking the 6 GHz spectrum for next-generation Wi-Fi have positioned Pakistan as the 10th Asian country to adopt Wi-Fi 6E and beyond. Additionally, Pakistan's rank in the Global Cybersecurity Index 2024 improved significantly—from 79th to among the top 40, reflecting progress in digital security and infrastructure resilience. The survey further noted the launch of national roaming along the Makran Coastal Highway, a move aimed at addressing coverage blackspots and improving emergency communication. To improve the regulatory environment, PTA also launched OASIS, a digital licensing system integrating services from NADRA, SECP, and NBP, revealed the survey. The country is preparing for a 5G rollout by mid-2025, with infrastructure upgrades, spectrum planning, and operator trials already underway, the survey mentioned. Following the approval of the National Space Policy, the development of a licensing framework for satellite broadband services is also in progress. The Economic Survey also noted ongoing work on a National Fiberisation Plan, developed in collaboration with the World Bank, to expand the country's fiber-optic backbone. Meanwhile, efforts to ensure digital safety have intensified, with PTA blocking over 1.43 million URLs related to unlawful content. Additionally, more than 400,000 quality-of-service tests were conducted to monitor and enforce telecom performance standards nationwide. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Commerce minister says committed to boosting pharma exports
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan reaffirmed his commitment to boosting pharmaceutical exports, announcing the establishment of an empowered Pharma Export Promotion Council, PharmEx Pakistan, under the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP). 'The pharmaceutical sector has huge export potential, and PharmEx Pakistan is just one or two steps away from becoming operational,' said the minister. He appreciated the industry's rapid progress and assured continued government facilitation to achieve global export targets. On trade with Afghanistan, he stated, 'With every passing day, our relations are growing stronger and more streamlined — pharmaceutical exports will rise accordingly.' The minister's remarks came during a presentation by Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Association (PPMA) Chairman Touqeerul Haq, who briefed him on the formation of PharmEx Pakistan, a public-private initiative to promote and manage pharmaceutical exports. Chairman Touqeerul Haq praised the minister's prompt action in addressing critical issues, stating it helped the industry avoid major financial losses. He added that PharmEx Pakistan has the potential to raise pharmaceutical exports from $700 million to $3 billion. Touqeerul Haq also called for better facilitation of exports to Afghanistan, a key market, and welcomed the minister's assurance of focused policy coordination. PharmEx Pakistan is expected to serve as a dedicated platform to enhance regulatory compliance, market access, and international outreach for Pakistani pharmaceutical products. The Minister assured the association of the Ministry's commitment to resolve the issues faced by the exporters and announced the establishment of a dedicated Exporter Facilitation Desk in the Ministry to help the export industry with critical matters requiring urgent intervention of the government. Trade worries weigh on Asia FX
BENGALURU: South Korean shares jumped to a 10-month high and the won firmed on Wednesday after liberal candidate Lee Jae-myung won the presidential election, while other regional currencies were tepid as investors awaited developments in trade talks with the US. Lee began his term on Wednesday, just hours after his victory in Tuesday's snap election. He has vowed to bring corporate reform measures to boost the domestic stock market, raise investment in artificial intelligence, and revive an economy reeling from slowing growth. With South Korea's key sectors from chips to autos heavily exposed to global trade, all eyes will also be on Lee's ability to negotiate a favourable trade deal with the US The country's benchmark stock index KOSPI surged 2.5% to its highest level since early August 2024. The won, which is up more than 7% this year, appreciated 0.2% to 1,374.4 per dollar. Analysts at TD Securities said 'better days' are ahead for the won. 'The risk premium from the political turmoil in Dec'24 have capped KRW's gains relative to peers amid the USD sell off this year. We see two wins for KRW on the horizon with an imminent fiscal package and a swift US-South Korea trade deal,' they said in a note. Other regional currencies were either flat or marginally lower against the greenback as the market focus turns to a Wednesday deadline for countries to submit their best proposals for trade deals with the US and thus a chance to avoid Trump's hefty tariffs. A possible call between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping is also in the spotlight this week. Trade tensions between the world's two biggest economies have flared anew since Trump accused China of violating an agreement to roll back tariffs and trade restrictions – claims Beijing has dismissed as 'groundless'.
