Japan's lunar lander enters Moon's orbit, prepares for historic touchdown
A privately developed Japanese lunar lander has successfully entered orbit around the moon, Tokyo-based ispace announced on Wednesday, marking a key step ahead of its planned landing attempt in early June.
The spacecraft, called Resilience, was launched aboard a SpaceX rocket in January and is now circling the moon after a months-long journey through space.
'The countdown to lunar landing has now officially begun,' ispace said in a statement. The firm hopes to become the first Japanese company to achieve a soft landing on the lunar surface.
The mission comes just over a year after ispace's first lander crashed during descent in April 2023. This second attempt carries a miniature rover equipped with a scoop to collect and analyse lunar soil, alongside other scientific payloads.
If successful, it will join a growing list of recent moon missions by private companies. Firefly Aerospace became the first private firm to land upright on the moon in March. A few days later, Intuitive Machines also landed, though its craft came to rest on its side in a crater.
The Resilience lander is part of a broader wave of commercial moonshots fuelled by public-private partnerships and interest in lunar exploration as a stepping stone for future deep-space missions.

India explores partners beyond US to build fighter jet engines: report

India's pursuit of indigenous defence capabilities has also led to the approval of a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet program. The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project, spearheaded by the state-run Aeronautical Development Agency, aims to modernise the Indian Air Force's fleet, which currently operates below its sanctioned strength of 42 squadrons. The AMCA is envisioned as a twin-engine stealth fighter, with plans to involve both private companies and public sector undertakings in its development. In parallel, India has been in discussions with General Electric (GE) since 2023 to jointly produce GE F414 engines. However, the talks have faced delays, and India imposed penalties on GE last year for severe delays in the delivery of engines that power the country's locally-made single-jet fighters. Earlier in February this year, India's state fighter jet maker Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) said it would start rolling them out once General Electric supplied engines for them. The recent focus on diversifying partnerships and enhancing domestic defence production capabilities underscores India's commitment to self-reliance in defence technology.

GameStop buys bitcoin worth $513 million in crypto push
GameStop has purchased bitcoin worth about $513 million, the company said on Wednesday as the ailing video game retailer looks to capitalize on the growing adoption of cryptocurrencies globally. GameStop said in a filing it acquired 4,710 bitcoins, although it did not disclose the period for the purchases. The world's largest cryptocurrency was trading down 0.7% at $108,903 by 7 a.m. ET. The purchases are GameStop's first bitcoin purchase since unveiling its plans in March to invest in the digital asset, adopting a strategy pioneered by Michael Saylor's Strategy an enterprise software company and the largest corporate holder of bitcoin. The company had cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities of $4.78 billion as of Feb. 1.
