2026 Stanley Cup odds: Oilers ahead of Panthers in opening odds

2026 Stanley Cup odds: Oilers ahead of Panthers in opening odds

New York Times4 hours ago

Opening championship odds are usually not all that creative, so it's not a surprise to see the two finalists for the last two years open as the favorites for next year's Stanley Cup. The Florida Panthers just beat the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final for the second year in a row, but it's the Oilers that open as the favorite ahead of the Panthers to claim the Cup in 2026.
The Oilers are +650 on BetMGM, with the Panthers next at +750. As it was throughout the playoffs, the odds remain tight at the top. The Colorado Avalanche (+800), Dallas Stars (+850) and Carolina Hurricanes (+900) aren't far behind the top two.
Florida has a chance to be the first back-to-back champion since the New York Islanders won four in a row from 1980 to 1983. That was an era of dynasties in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens winning four in a row from 1976 to 1979 directly before the Islanders' run. The Panthers are the seventh team to win back-to-back Cup titles since the Islanders' four-peat (Oilers 1984-85 and 1987-88, Pittsburgh Penguins 1991-92 and 2016-17, Detroit Red Wings 1997-98, Tampa Bay Lightning 2020-21). Of the previous six, only the 2022 Lightning made it back to the Cup Final before losing to Colorado.

The Panthers have some major questions to answer in the offseason with captain Brad Marchand, 37 years old, and Conn Smythe Trophy winner Sam Bennett heading into free agency. Bennett had 22 points in the playoffs, including six in six games against the Oilers, and will turn 29 on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Oilers still have Connor McDavid, which makes them an obvious contender. Edmonton has come oh so close to ending Canada's Stanley Cup drought, but after coming one game short last year, they were two games short this year. The last Canadian champion remains the 1993 Canadiens.
As for the other teams near the top of the odds board, that lack of creativity shows up again. All four teams that made the conference finals are in the top five in the odds to win it next year. The only exception is Colorado, which is a recent champion (2022) that has remained a favorite in the odds for the last few years.

Fever Coach Stephanie White Reveals Concerning Update on Tuesday

Fever Coach Stephanie White Reveals Concerning Update on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Indiana Fever got a major boost in their last game with the return of All-Star guard Caitlin Clark, who had missed the team's last five contests due to a lingering quad injury. Advertisement Clark quickly made up for lost time by erupting for a season-high 32 points in her first game back, while also leading Indiana to a huge 102-88 win over the defending champions, the New York Liberty. While the Fever got Clark back for Saturday's contest, they also lost one of their key players for that matchup. Six-time All-Star DeWanna Bonner was forced to miss the Liberty game due to personal reasons, and the details of her leave of absence have not been disclosed to the public. Bonner is out again for Tuesday's matchup against the Connecticut Sun at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, and head coach Stephanie White provided an update on Bonner's status before the game. Indiana Fever forward DeWanna Bonner during a game.© Grace Smith/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images According to White, the two-time WNBA champion guard-forward is currently "purely day-to-day" in terms of her playing status, via Chloe Peterson of IndyStar. What could be a cause for concern, though, is that White refused to specify if Bonner, who joined the team as a free agent in the offseason, will be able to join the team for its upcoming road trip. Advertisement After Tuesday's game, Indiana is scheduled to play three straight games on the road, starting with the Golden State Valkyries on Thursday. It's going to be a tough stretch for the Fever--they play three road games in six days--and not having Bonner could prove to be a significant blow for this squad. Bonner hasn't exactly been incredible to start the season for her new team, but there's no denying that she brings a lot to the table for Indiana. In nine games played this season, the two-time All-WNBA veteran has averaged 7.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1 steals in 21.3 minutes per contest. Caitlin Clark Makes WNBA History on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever are back in action on Tuesday night in a home matchup against the Connecticut Sun at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year is looking to keep her foot on the gas after her incredible 32-point explosion in their win against the New York Liberty on Saturday. Advertisement Clark did just that in the opening half of Tuesday's game, finishing with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting, one rebound, five assists, two steals and three triples in 18 minutes of action in the first half. The former Iowa superstar made WNBA history yet again with her fourth assist of the evening. Clark entered Tuesday's game with 108 points and 46 assists. By surpassing the 50-assist mark in the opening half of the Sun game, the 23-year-old marked another historic milestone in just her sixth appearance this season. According to Polymarket Hoops on X, Clark has set a new record for the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 100 points and 50 assists in a season. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark celebrates with fans after scoring a Smith-Imagn Images Clark beat her own record, which she set in her rookie campaign last year. She needed eight games to reach 100 points and 50 assists last season, and the fact that Clark did it in just six games this season speaks volumes about how she has elevated her game in Year 2. Advertisement It is also worth noting that Clark is coming off a five-game injury layoff. She was forced to sit out a significant amount of time due to a lingering quad injury, but it is clear that she is now making up for lost time.
