Best try-saving tackle ever leaves referee, commentators and stadium in disbelief
You'd be hard pressed to find a better try-saver than this from the All Blacks star.
Tom Wright looked for the world as if he had scored, but Damian McKenzie had other ideas.

All Blacks star Damian McKenzie has produced one of the greatest try-saving tackles ever seen.
The moment occurred in a match between McKenzie's Chiefs and Australian outfit ACT Brumbies, who finished second and third, respectively, in the regular season. Australian international Tom Wright was seemingly destined for a try as he surged towards the left corner, with McKenzie giving chase. Wright appeared to have dotted down, with commentators and fans all thinking Brumbies had scored, but that wasn't the case.

In quite remarkable circumstances, the 30-year-old fly-half managed to get his left hand underneath the ball, while simultaneously holding Wright's hand from angling the ball towards the ground as they slid across the turf.

Everyone inside the stadium thought the try had been scored, before the TMO stopped the celebrations to check the grounding.
After a conversation with the TMO, referee Nick Berry confirmed the ball had not been grounded by Wright, prompting a raucous reaction from both the crowd and commentators.
"No try," confirmed Berry, laughing in disbelief.

"Even Nic Berry can't believe it," said Stan Sport commentator Sean Maloney.
"That's the biggest cheer of the night," said the co-commentator. "Look where Damian McKenzie has come from. He made sure Tom Wright wasn't going to step him on the inside, goes straight for the ball and gets his arm underneath - that's incredible."

Chiefs went on to book their place in the Super Rugby final with a 37-17 victory over Brumbies. McKenzie's influence on the game extended far beyond this sensational try-saver, kicking 22 points from six penalties and two conversions.
"Outstanding performance from the lads," said McKenzie after the game.

"The Brumbies come out of the box fast, like we knew they would, and I just love the way we were really composed to stick to our game.
"We put the ball in front of our forwards, and obviously our set piece was great tonight. So when we got into the 22 we managed to come away with points most of the time."
Despite being known for his attacking flair, McKenzie had shown how important he can be in defence as well. With Richie Mo'unga seemingly out of the picture for the All Blacks - playing in Japan - it seems McKenzie is the front-runner to earn the starting jersey for his country this summer.

The fly-half spent one season in Japan back in 2021, before returning to New Zealand in 2022 ahead of the World Cup the following year. He has recently signed a new contract with New Zealand Rugby and Chiefs until the end of 2029, when he'll be 34-years-old.

Arsenal urged to sign Man City star after £36m Rayan Cherki transfer

Arsenal have been urged to make a move for Phil Foden following Rayan Cherki's move to Manchester City. City have significantly strengthened ahead of the Club World Cup with the signings of Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Ait-Nouri. Cherki arrives at City in a €42.5 million (£36.1m) deal from Lyon following an impressive season in Ligue 1. The 21-year-old also caught the eye with his first two senior appearances for France's national side last week. Cherki primarily played on the right side of Lyon's attack which raises questions over Foden's place in the City team under Pep Guardiola. City are already looking to sell Jack Grealish this summer but former Chelsea, Marseille and Republic of Ireland striker Tony Cascarino believes Foden may also be on the move. When asked if he believes Arsenal would make a move for Grealish, Cascarino told talkSPORT: 'No, I think Foden's way more likely. 'Obviously Arteta worked at Man City with Phil Foden and for whatever reason, I'm sure we'll find out down the line, Phil Foden just hasn't been the player we know him to be this season. More Trending 'From where he was the Football Writers' Player of the Year the season before, his performances this year have just not justified that. 'But all what's happening at City and all the spending that's gone on, I wouldn't be surprised if Foden is allowed to go somewhere. 'Whether City let him go Arsenal, I don't know, but they let Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko go there. 'If Arsenal could get him, I think Arteta would really consider that, yeah.' George Russell sees off Max Verstappen to take brilliant pole at Canadian GP

George Russell took a brilliant pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix after he saw off rival Max Verstappen to clinch top spot in Montreal. Russell delivered the goods with the final lap of a thrilling qualifying session to cross the line 0.160 seconds clear of Verstappen. Championship leader Oscar Piastri had to settle for third but it was another bitterly-disappointing one-lap showing from Lando Norris which leaves him seventh on the grid. GEORGE TAKES POLE IN CANADA!!! 🙌 — Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team (@MercedesAMGF1) June 14, 2025 Kimi Antonelli finished fourth, one place ahead of Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton. Russell started on pole here last year and came from nowhere to secure first place again. Verstappen, who crashed into Russell at the previous round in Spain, will join him on the front row. 'Today was awesome in front of this amazing crowd,' said Russell. 'The last lap was one of the most exhilarating laps of my life. 'I got into the last corner and I could see on my steering wheel that this lap was mighty. It was a surprise to see I was first but I was chuffed too.' Verstappen is one point away from a ban following his coming together with Russell in Barcelona and – when asked about the prospect of being joined on the front row by his rival – Russell added: 'We are mates so we are all good. 'I have got a few more points on my licence to play with, so let's see.' Norris, whose championship challenge has been derailed by errors in qualifying, made a mistake on his first run in Q1 and had to abort the final right-left chicane. 'So Lando let's just reset and remember your braking references,' Norris was told by his race engineer, Will Joseph. Norris's error handed the advantage to both Verstappen and Piastri with the former holding a 0.025 seconds advantage over the Australian. Here's the moment Albon's engine cover flew off 👀 #F1 #CanadianGP — Formula 1 (@F1) June 14, 2025 Norris came round again but he was 0.377sec off the pace with his father, Adam Norris, grimacing in the back of the McLaren garage. On to the final runs and it was Piastri who went fastest only to be usurped by Verstappen and then Russell. Norris, who trails Piastri by 10 points in the standings, was a distant 0.726 behind Russell and half-a-second adrift of Piastri in the other McLaren to deal another blow to the Briton's title hopes. A red flag was deployed in Q1 after bodywork flew off Alex Albon's Williams on the back straight. An eight-minute delay followed as the debris and Albon's car was repaired to allow him to take part in the restart. Albon progressed to the next phase – and qualified 10th – but his team-mate Carlos Sainz, who appeared to be impeded by RB's Isack Hadjar, was eliminated. After a thunderous push in Qualifying, Max will start tomorrow's Grand Prix from the front row 👏 Yuki qualified P11, but has been handed a 10-place grid penalty following a red flag infringement in FP3 ⏱️ 🏁 RUS, P2 Max, PIA, ANT, HAM, ALO, NOR, LEC, HAD, ALB, P11 Yuki #F1 … — Oracle Red Bull Racing (@redbullracing) June 14, 2025 Hadjar finished ninth but he could be served a penalty with the stewards investigating the flashpoint. Sainz was left in 17th but will start one place higher after Yuki Tsunoda was demoted from 11th to last following a red-flag infringement in final practice. Home favourite Lance Stroll will start a place back from Sainz after he fell at the first hurdle, 14 days after he withdrew from the race in Spain with a wrist injury.
