India's space economy set to witness quantum leap in coming years, says Union Minister

Union Minister of State for Personnel and Public Grievances Jitendra Singh on Monday said the country's space economy was set to witness a quantum leap in the coming years. Addressing a seminar on 'Empowering Citizens in Digital India: Administrative, Management and Organisational Reforms,' at the Southern Regional Conference of Indian Institute of Public Administration, the Union Minister said space economy which was at present valued about 8 billion dollars would see 10 times growth in the next five to six years. 'It is very important to explore the unexplored so as to reap the benefits as we march towards becoming a developed country. Space and ocean are potential sectors in contributing towards economic growth. Group captain Shubhanshu Shukla's travel to International Space Station is country's ascendancy to space. Our space economy is set to see a quantum leap. It will be around 44 billion dollars in five to six years,' the Minister said. Referring to the reforms initiated by the Central government in the last 11 years, the Minister said far reaching measures adopted had a social outlook with people feeling self confident and dignified. Technology has empowered citizens and redefined the relationship between government and people through transparent and paperless governance, the Minister said. He said now more than 80 per cent of Indians have a bank account. In the last 11 years, around 55.22 crore bank accounts had been created. The government was able to transfer around ₹44 lakh crore through Direct Benefit Transfer mode to the beneficiaries under various schemes. 'The self esteem of average Indian has gone up substantially, especially the transformation that took place in the digital sphere. The initiatives taken were not confined to governance but were about changing social outlook also. People are feeling more confident about the country now,' the Minister said. Mr. Singh emphasised the pivotal role of Mission Karmayogi in modernising civil services through competency-based training and noted the critical importance of aligning administrative reforms with India's goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. He also released a book titled 'Digital Governance in India-Transforming Public Service Delivery' by T. Gopinath, Assistant Professor and Dean (Student Welfare), Department of Public Administration, Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Chandigarh. He also honoured retired bureaucrat E. Vallavan for his contribution to public administration. Chief Secretary Sharat Chauhan in his address said Digital India has enabled Puducherry to support data-driven decision-making, streamline reporting for compliance, improve inter-departmental coordination, avoid duplication and strengthen audit mechanisms. Overall, he said organisational efficiency and accountability in delivery of public welfare services have witnessed visible improvements. 'So far, about 60 services of departments such as Fisheries, Social Welfare, Women and Child Development, Adi-Dravidar Welfare and Civil Supplies have been made available online with a common compliance framework for easy data verification. All major e-governance applications have been designed with multilingual support, allowing users to access portals and services in their preferred language to ensure accessibility and enhance citizen participation,' Mr. Chauhan said.

IIT Delhi promotes STEM education in northeastern India through outreach initiative

New Delhi: IIT Delhi recently engaged with students in India's northeastern region to spark their interest in science and engineering education. As part of this outreach, a series of activities were conducted under the IIT-PAL (Professor Assisted Learning) programme, an initiative by IIT Delhi in collaboration with Ministry of Education, Govt of India. Under the outreach initiative, IIT Delhi's Professor Ravi P Singh, National Coordinator for Chemistry-IIT PAL, visited different schools and colleges in Aizawl along with other districts in Mizoram and conducted hands-on workshops. The goal was to enthuse students in the remote areas about science and technology at an early age and make them familiar with the journey of preparing ahead for careers in STEM with the help of the IIT PAL. The events were organised with the objective of enhancing students' understanding of scientific principles and encouraging them to take up science and technology as a career option. "These workshops aim to go beyond traditional classroom learning by providing students with opportunities to explore scientific concepts, develop critical thinking skills and potentially inspire them to pursue STEM. A strong emphasis on STEM careers and persuasion can empower them to apply their ideas for the betterment of society," said Prof. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The all new SP125 that comes with advance technology & features Honda Learn More Ravi P Singh. During his interaction with the students, Singh encouraged them to think outside the box and develop their own ideas and approaches to scientific problems. The students were encouraged to ask questions, formulate hypotheses and design experiments, fostering a deeper understanding of the scientific method. MSID:: 122162406 413 |

Listening to Indian ragas can enhance attention, boost mental stability: IIT Mandi

New Delhi: Amid rising mental health challenges such as stress, burnout, and attention deficits, a new study by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi on Monday showed that Indian classical ragas can potentially enhance levels of attention, emotional regulation, and mental stability. The study, conducted in collaboration with IIT Kanpur, provides scientific validation for music as a therapeutic tool: one that is culturally resonant and non-invasive. The research, which involved 40 participants exposed to the ragas, utilised advanced electroencephalogram (EEG) microstate analysis -- a real-time brain-mapping technique that captures momentary yet significant patterns of neural activity. The findings, published in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, suggests that listening to Raga Darbari -- known for its soothing and uplifting qualities -- before exams or important meetings may improve focus, while Raga Jogiya -- a melancholic melody -- could help manage emotional overwhelm or grief. The shifts observed in neural activity were not random, said first author Dr. Ashish Gupta, Assistant Professor, IIT Mandi. 'The data showed repeatable, consistent transitions after exposure to the ragas, suggesting Indian classical music can serve as a powerful tool for mental wellness. The EEG data consistently showed how music exposure, compared to silence, shifted the brain into more stable and functional patterns,' added Gupta. The EEG test employed small metal electrodes, known as 'microstates', which often last only a few milliseconds and represent the brain's transient modes of operation, such as attention, emotional engagement, or mind-wandering. Brain cells communicate through electrical impulses, and this activity is represented as wavy lines on an EEG recording. The research revealed that Raga Darbari and Raga Jogiya can fundamentally alter EEG microstates, and show fleeting but powerful neural patterns that reflect attention, emotion, and cognitive processing. 'EEG microstates offer a window into how the brain operates moment, attention, mind-wandering, or emotional engagement. What we found was that Ragas don't just evoke feelings, they actually reprogramme the brain in real time, it is remarkable to see how these ancient melodies consistently guide the brain into more stable and focused patterns,' said Prof Laxmidhar Behera, Director, IIT Mandi. The study also observed an overall increase in brain stability across participants, with microstates becoming longer and more grounded, indicating a calmer, more focused mind.
