Emirati airline Flydubai to resume flights to Damascus from June 1 - Dubai Gov't

Damascus, May 22 (UNI) Emirati airline Flydubai will begin flights to Damascus from June 1, the Government of Dubai Media Office said.
"Flydubai, the Dubai-based carrier, has announced today the start of direct flights to Damascus from 01 June 2025. Flights to Damascus International Airport (DAM) will operate daily from Terminal 2, Dubai International (DXB)," the office said in a statement on Wednesday.
In mid-April, the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority announced its decision to resume air traffic with Syria shortly after the visit to Abu Dhabi of Syria's interim president, Ahmed Al-Sharaa. Flights of all Emirati airlines to Syria were suspended more than a decade ago amid instability in the country.
Syria's armed opposition captured Damascus on December 8, 2024. Bashar Assad stepped down as Syrian president and left the country. Armed opposition leader Ahmed Al-Sharaa was declared transitional president in January and the new cabinet was formed in March.

Israel warns Hamas to accept U.S. envoy's Gaza ceasefire deal "or be destroyed"

Jerusalem, May 31 (UNI) Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz on Friday warned Hamas to accept the Gaza ceasefire deal proposed by U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, "or be destroyed." Witkoff's proposal includes the release of 10 living Israeli hostages and 18 bodies in two phases in exchange for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza as well as the release by Israel of 1,236 Palestinian detainees and prisoners, along with the bodies of 180 Palestinians, according to media reports. In a statement issued by his office, Katz said the Israeli military continued its operations in Gaza with full force, carrying out attacks by air, land, and sea on an unprecedented scale "for maximum protection of our soldiers in preparation for the entry of the manoeuvring forces in each area." In a statement issued on Friday, the Israeli military said that since Thursday, its air force, alongside ground forces, had struck dozens of targets across the Gaza Strip, which "eliminated terrorists, dismantled weapons, and dismantled terrorist and underground infrastructure sites." It added that during the military operations, two rocket-propelled grenades were fired at Israeli troops, lightly wounding three soldiers. Of the 251 hostages seized during the October 2023 Hamas attack, 57 remain in Gaza, of whom 34 are believed to be dead, according to the Israeli military. UNI XINHUA ARN

Rolex lovers splash out on used watches before Trump tariffs

Watch enthusiasts snapped up used Rolex SA and Patek Philippe SA timepieces at the end of April, splashing out before possible tariffs from US President Donald Trump . The watch dealer and trading platform Subdial often sees a flurry of activity after people get their paychecks at the end of each month. In April, the post-payday spike was 160 per cent higher than normal trading levels, far above the average 112 per cent bump experienced on other pay days over the past year. The volume growth was particularly strong in the US and UK, Christy Davis, founder of London-based Subdial, said in an interview. 'People heard about the tariffs and went, 'Oh shoot, let's buy now,'' Davis said. 'They waited for pay day and then sales volumes just went through the roof.' The phenomenon echoed another trend seen in Switzerland, where watch exports jumped by nearly a fifth in April — with shipments to the US more than doubling ahead of expanded tariffs threatened by Trump. Watches made from precious metals, steel and bimetallic materials, products also targeted by Trump, saw the most growth, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry. The US jump was likely a one-off response by exporters seeking to avoid higher tariffs, rather than a structural increase in demand, Jean-Philippe Bertschy, an analyst at Vontobel, said in a note. Swiss watch exports fell 6.4 per cent to the rest of the world in the month, continuing a weak start to the year. The secondary watch market has continued its gradual rebound from February's post-pandemic lows. Since reaching that nadir, the Bloomberg Subdial Watch Index has risen about 5.3 per cent through late May, returning to levels last seen in October. It remains far from the levels it reached three years ago, when prices of used luxury watches surged as Covid lockdowns ended.
