Sony's profits rises on robust performance for music, movies and games

Japanese technology and entertainment company Sony logged an 18% rise in profit for the fiscal year through March on healthy results at its music and video-game operations. Tokyo-based Sony Corp. said Wednesday that its annual profit totaled 1.14 trillion yen (USD 7.8 billion), up from 970.6 billion yen in the previous fiscal year.
Annual sales were virtually unchanged, inching down to 12.957 trillion yen (USD 88 billion) from 13.020 trillion yen.
One area that lagged among Sony's sprawling businesses was the financial segment, where revenue stalled. But its film division and its imaging and sensor solutions segment did well.
Among the movies that fared positively at the box office for the fiscal year through March were "Venom: The Last Dance," featuring the Marvel Comics superhero, and "Bad Boys: Ride or Die," an action comedy, in which Will Smith and Martin Lawrence come back in their popular cop roles, the fourth installment in the series.
Sony, which makes the PlayStation console and game software played on that machine, also marked healthy results in the gaming business.
Its music operations, which also held up, include recordings, streaming services and music for games. The top-selling recorded music projects for the latest fiscal year globally was SZA's "SOS Deluxe: LANA," followed by Beyonce, Future & Metro Boomin and Travis Scott.
For the Japan music business, the top-seller was Kenshi Yonezu's "Lost Corner" album, followed by offerings from Stray Kids and Six Tones.
For the January-March quarter, Sony posted a 197.7 billion yen (USD 1.3 billion) profit, up 5 per cent from 189 billion yen the same quarter in the previous fiscal year. Sales were 2.6 trillion yen (USD 17.7 billion), down 24 per cent from 3.48 trillion yen.
Sony is forecasting a nearly 13 per cent drop in profit for the fiscal year through March 2026, to 930 billion yen (USD 6.3 billion), on 11.7 trillion yen (USD 80 billion) sales, down 2.9 per cent on-year.
Sony officials are set to brief reporters on the latest company strategy for growth later in the day. Sony stocks lost 3 per cent in Tokyo morning trading.

DIY is finding a sweet spot in the world of desserts, too. MyFroyoLand gives customers the chance to swirl their own frozen yoghurt and load it with toppings. Founder Avinash Dolwani remarks that this model bridges the gap between cafés and traditional dessert parlours. 'DIY trends are growing as customers demand more personalisation and unique experiences,' he notes. The rise of DIY cafés reflects a global shift toward slow living, where creativity and connection take centre stage. Cafés inviting customers to turn their meal into a memory, has attracted not just students and young professionals, but families as well. Pratyusha Paul Chowdhury, an engineer and mother of two, shares, 'My kids love being able to choose their flavours and toppings. It turns a simple outing into an interactive experience.'

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, Canestraro said, 'You could tell that the set was tense. There was some discomfort from everybody.' The actor and stuntman joined the production in early 2024 for what was supposed to be a five-day shoot. Instead, he stayed on set for two weeks. 'What I did experience was filming that was taking longer than expected,' he shared. 'Why are we taking so much time to film all of this scene? Why are we not on schedule?' Canestraro also spoke about Blake Lively's behavior during filming. He previously worked with her on A Simple Favor in 2018 and remembered the experience as easy and pleasant. However, in It Ends with Us, he noticed she was more closed off. During a promotional shoot years earlier, Canestraro had posed nearly nude for marketing images with Lively and found her to be very professional and considerate. 'It was an extremely easy time,' he said. 'She even made sure I had a bathroom after the shoot wrapped.' When he reunited with her for this film, he said that he was comfortable working with her again, but she seemed different. Canestraro didn't realize what was happening behind the scenes until Blake Lively filed a lawsuit against Justin Baldoni in December 2024, accusing him of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment. Baldoni later filed a USD 400 million countersuit against Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, claiming defamation and interference. Looking back, Canestraro said the filming delays and on-set tension made more sense in hindsight. He mentioned that once the scandal became public, it helped to understand why production had taken longer than expected. He also reflected on Ryan Reynolds' presence on set, saying that while he initially thought it was a supportive gesture, he later wondered if Reynolds had been there because Blake Lively was already going through a difficult time. Canestraro shared that he hasn't kept in touch with Baldoni but remembered him as being extremely friendly during the shoot. He acknowledged that Baldoni has a family and suggested that the situation must be difficult for him. The stuntman made it clear he wasn't choosing sides. With a trial scheduled for March 2026, the legal dispute between Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively continues to attract attention and raise questions about what truly happened during the filming of It Ends with Us.
