Japan team finds gene that determines calico cats' color patterns

A Japanese research team led by Kyushu University professor Hiroyuki Sasaki has said it discovered a gene that determines the color patterns of the tricolored calico cat, known in Japan as mike neko.
The team found that the coloring was decided by the ARHGAP36 gene on the X chromosome. The orange coloration reflects a missing portion of this gene, while the black fur color is due to the absence of such a deletion, the team said.
The team's findings were published in the online edition of the U.S. journal Current Biology on Thursday.
It was established some 120 years ago that almost all calico cats are female and that the color-deciding factor was in the X chromosomes. About 60 years later, researchers discovered that one of the two X chromosomes is inactivated in calico cats.
But the gene responsible for the distinct coloration long remained unidentified.
"As a dog and cat lover, I couldn't let this long-standing mystery go unsolved," Sasaki said.
He said that some of the team's research costs were funded through crowdfunding between 2022 and 2023, raising over ¥10 million ($69,000) from 600 people.
"I think that there is no doubt (that ARHGAP36 is behind the coloration) as a research team from Stanford University in the United States also identified the same gene and announces it at the same time as us," he said.
Sasaki's team, which includes members from Kyushu University, the National Institute of Genetics, Azabu University and Kindai University, extracted and analyzed DNA from cats of many different colors, with the help from an animal hospital in the city of Fukuoka in the Kyushu region.
The team also examined data on cat DNA made available by the University of Missouri before discovering the ARHGAP36 gene.
The team said that a deletion of about 5,000 base pairs of the ARHGAP36 gene on the active one of the X chromosomes results in the production of pheomelanin, which is orange in color, while the gene without such a deletion creates the black pigment eumelanin.
Like calico cats, tortoiseshell cats, or sabi neko, are mostly female. Tortoiseshell cats also share the same coloring phenomenon.
Orange cats are mainly male, possessing one X chromosome and one Y chromosome. Their orange coloration, too, is due to the ARHGAP36 gene deletion on the X chromosome.
The rare male calico cats have one extra chromosome, possessing two X chromosomes and one Y chromosome.
The white coloration in cats, however, is not the ARHGAP36 gene's doing but is caused by a different gene.
Domestic cats are descendants of the African wildcat that were domesticated about 10,000 years ago. Similar to a brown tabby cat, the African wildcat has brown-black striped fur pattern.
The team suggested that it may be able to pinpoint when the ARHGAP36 gene deletion happened by assessing mummies and pictures of ancient cats.

It says the results are consistent with a 2023 report which "concluded that the discharge would have a negligible radiological impact on people and the environment." The IAEA published the latest report as part of additional monitoring measures that began last year. The number of locations for collecting samples was increased as part of the measures. The report covers a sample of seawater collected near the plant in October last year. It says experts from research institutions in China, South Korea and Switzerland took part in the analysis of the seawater collected near the plant. Japan's Foreign Ministry says missions for conducting the additional measures have been carried out three times so far, and that further survey results are expected to be published in due course. The ministry says Japan's government "will continue to maintain close coordination with the IAEA in sharing information with the international community in a highly transparent manner and fostering a better understanding of the safety of the discharge of ALPS treated water within both the domestic and international communities." ALPS is the Advanced Liquid Processing System, used to treat water that accumulates at the plant. Water used to cool molten fuel at the Fukushima plant has been mixing with rain and groundwater. The accumulated water is being treated to remove most radioactive substances, but still contains tritium. Before releasing the treated water into the ocean, the plant's operator dilutes it to reduce the tritium level to about one-seventh of the World Health Organization's guidance level for drinking water.

The Tokyo High Court has overturned a lower court ruling and has dismissed a claim by plaintiffs for former Tokyo Electric Power Company executives to pay damages to the utility over the 2011 nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant. The ruling handed down on Friday does not hold the defendants liable. TEPCO shareholders had filed the lawsuit against five people who were in top managerial posts at the company at the time of the accident that followed a powerful quake and tsunami in March 2011. The plaintiffs said the accident occurred because of poor safety measures at the plant. They demanded that the defendants pay damages to TEPCO worth over 23 trillion yen, or about 160 billion dollars, to cover the costs the company incurred in compensating local residents who had to evacuate, decommissioning the plant and conducting decontamination efforts. Earlier in 2022, the Tokyo District Court ordered four of the defendants to pay the utility a total of 13.3 trillion yen, or about 92 billion dollars, in compensation. The amount of damages is believed to be the highest ever ordered by a court in Japan. Both the plaintiffs and the defendants appealed the ruling. At issue was a long-term assessment of possible seismic activities issued by a government panel in 2002. The lower court ruling said the assessment was found scientifically reliable. The presiding judge said the assessment made it obligatory for the company's managers to take measures against tsunami. The Tokyo High Court Presiding Judge Kino Toshikazu said on Friday that while the nuclear plant operator should have respected the assessment, it cannot necessarily be judged that the operator had been legally liable to take anti-tsunami measures.

Tokyo-based venture firm ispace says its second attempt to touch down a lunar lander on the surface of the moon ended in failure. It had aimed to become the first private Japanese company to successfully complete a lunar landing. The CEO of ispace, Hakamada Takeshi, said: "We concluded it was difficult to complete our second mission to touch down on the moon's surface. So, we decided to end it." The lander started its descent after 3 a.m. on Friday, Japan time. It was scheduled to touch down on a crater-less area in the moon's northern hemisphere at 4:17. But ispace announced about 15 minutes later that it had yet to establish communication with the lander. The firm held a news conference and revealed that the lander was not able to slow down to the scheduled touchdown speed. The company's CEO said the lander was likely to have had a hard landing. Hakamada also said: "It's our duty to thoroughly use the lessons from this failure for the next time. We want to continue maintaining the current trend of lunar exploration and activities in Japan. A rocket carrying the craft lifted off from the US state of Florida in January. The lander entered orbit about 100 kilometers above the moon in late May. The first lunar landing attempt by ispace failed in 2023. It later overhauled the lander's control system and changed the touchdown target for the second mission. Only two US firms have successfully performed lunar landings.
