Rising Above Bias: Pelin Konakci
Born in Kirklareli, a small city in the European part of Turkey, Pelin Konakci's life story is shaped by a rich cultural history and strong family bonds. Her maternal grandparents were immigrants from Yugoslavia and Greece, part of the population exchange between Muslim communities in Greece and other Balkan countries. Surrounded by an extended family, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, Pelin grew up in an environment filled with love, connection, and unshakable support.
A New Chapter in Antalya
At the age of 7, Pelin's family moved to Antalya in southern Turkey, due to her father's job. This marked the beginning of her childhood in a vibrant and sunny city that would shape her growth and education. Early access to English education at a private primary school, followed by enrollment at a selective public middle and high school where English was the primary medium of instruction, provided Pelin with a competitive edge. Her school was known for admitting only high-achieving students, and it was here that Pelin's passion for learning truly flourished. By the time she graduated high school, she had earned the distinction of being ranked third in her class.
Love for Learning
Driven by a deep interest in mathematics, science, and languages, Pelin pursued a degree in engineering. Her dedication and hard work earned her a place in the Computer Engineering Department at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, one of Turkey's most prestigious institutions. Set against the backdrop of the Bosphorus, Boğaziçi was a place where Pelin's critical thinking skills were honed, preparing her to become an independent and visionary thinker with global potential.
However, her path was not without obstacles. Arriving at university with limited exposure to personal computers, Pelin faced a steep learning curve. Yet, through perseverance, she not only adjusted to life in the bustling city but also excelled academically, finishing her first year as the top student in her department. This determination marked the beginning of her unstoppable journey.
The Dot-Com Boom
As the dot-com boom reshaped the tech landscape, Pelin seized the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field. She secured internships every summer at major technology companies, including Microsoft, Superonline, and Aselsan. These internships provided invaluable exposure to various tech domains and solidified Pelin's passion for the industry.
From Software Developer to Sales Engineer
After graduation, Pelin began her professional career at Garanti Teknoloji, the IT arm of Garanti Bank. Working as a software developer in the digital channels department, Pelin played a key role in pioneering internet banking and call center applications in the early days of digital banking. This experience laid the foundation for her technical expertise and understanding of banking operations.
Her next career leap came when she joined Sun Microsystems as a Junior Sales Engineer. This move allowed her to join a global team of young professionals from across EMEA, and Pelin's training took her from Switzerland to Scotland, and even to Sun's headquarters in California. These international experiences expanded her technical and leadership skills, with a memorable highlight being the opportunity to meet Sun Microsystems' co-founder, Scott McNealy.
Climbing the Ladder
Pelin's journey took another significant turn when she transitioned into the specialized role of Solution Architect for Identity and Access Management (IAM) after Sun's acquisition of relevant software. Her deep technical knowledge and leadership abilities were recognized as she took on increasingly larger projects, working with major telcos and banks in the region.
A defining moment of Pelin's career came in 2007 when she was tasked with resolving a critical issue on a large-scale project in Saudi Arabia. Although she faced bureaucratic challenges, such as not being able to travel alone to Saudi Arabia due to visa restrictions, Pelin's tenacity and her company's support allowed her to successfully manage the project with the help of her husband.
Education and Career
In 2008, Pelin decided to pursue an Executive MBA at Koç University to enhance her business acumen and prepare for leadership roles. Balancing work, education, and family life was a challenge, but Pelin's resilience and determination helped her succeed. The MBA program, which combined theoretical knowledge with practical application, provided her with invaluable insights and a network of peers that would prove essential throughout her career.
A Pivotal Career Move
In 2009, following Oracle's acquisition of Sun Microsystems, Pelin saw an opportunity to pivot into consulting sales, merging her technical background with her newly acquired business expertise. This transition marked a turning point in her career, allowing her to explore the commercial side of the tech industry while still leveraging her technical knowledge.
A New Chapter
In 2013, Pelin took on the role of Security Sales Leader for Turkey at IBM. At this time, IBM was establishing its Security Business Unit, and Pelin's leadership contributed significantly to the company's market penetration in Turkey, positioning IBM as a key security vendor. Her leadership continued to grow as she transitioned into a regional leadership role in 2018, overseeing the Digital Trust portfolio across the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region. This move to Dubai introduced Pelin to the fast-growing, dynamic opportunities in the MEA region, and she embraced the challenges of working in a diverse environment.
New Role at Anomali
After spending 11 rewarding years at IBM, Pelin embarked on a new adventure as the Regional Channel Director for Anomali, a leading cybersecurity company known for its AI-driven security platforms. In this new role, Pelin is focused on building strategic partnerships and alliances to expand Anomali's presence across the META region. She is determined to scale the company's impact and address the ever-evolving challenges in cybersecurity.
Overcoming Setbacks
Pelin's career has not been without setbacks. On several occasions, she was passed over for promotions, but rather than being discouraged, she used these moments as opportunities to learn and grow. Seeking feedback and developing the qualities that companies value in leadership allowed her to overcome these hurdles, ultimately positioning her for greater career growth.
Advice for Young Women Leaders
Reflecting on her journey, Pelin offers powerful advice to young women aspiring to leadership roles in tech. 'Women in tech often face unconscious bias,' she acknowledges. 'There may be times when you feel underestimated or discouraged, but keep believing in yourself. Push boundaries and lead with courage and heart. Surround yourself with a support system and seek mentors who will guide you along your path.'
Pelin's message is clear: 'It's through struggle that growth happens. Embrace these challenges as opportunities to shine brighter. The power of community and the strength that comes from lifting each other up is at the core of great leadership.'
Looking Ahead
From her humble beginnings in Kirklareli to her role as Regional Channel Director at Anomali, Pelin Konakci's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. With an unwavering growth mindset, she continues to push boundaries and pave the way for future generations of women leaders in technology.

EBRD supports Egypt with first private-to-private electricity contracts

Energy market reform is taking a major step forward in Egypt as the government approves the first bilateral power purchase agreements between private generators and consumers. As part of a pilot of the private-to-private (P2P) rules, developed with technical support from the EBRD to the Egyptian Electric Utility and Consumer Protection Regulatory Agency (Egypt ERA) and approved last year, four renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of 400 MW have been approved to contract directly with end-consumers of electricity. The four approved projects are: KarmSolar, which will develop a 100 MW solar plant to supply electricity to Suez Steel. AMEA Power, which is building a solar facility of the same size to serve BEFAR Group and the Suez Canal Container Terminal. TAQA PV, which will install 100 MW of hybrid capacity (solar and wind) to power operations at Ezz Steel. Enara, developing a hybrid plant to deliver 100 MW to the El Alamein Silicone Products Company and Helwan Fertilizers. The P2P rules set out the conditions under which generators can use the power grid to sell electricity directly to consumers, a major departure from the existing single-buyer model and a significant step forward in Egypt's efforts to liberalise its electricity market – a goal set out in the 2015 Electricity Law. This approach introduces competition into the electricity sector, expands consumer choice and promotes private investments in renewable energy. It also introduces a path for Egyptian businesses, especially those that are energy-intensive and focused on the export market, to sign agreements directly with renewable energy producers that are increasingly required to prove their low carbon product credentials, for example green hydrogen destined for the European market. Furthermore, given the electricity generation under these contracts will be entirely privately financed, the P2P scheme represents an important route for Egypt to scale up electricity production without the need for government contracts. Mark Davis, the EBRD's managing director for the southern and eastern Mediterranean region, said: 'This milestone shows how the right regulatory framework can unlock private investment and drive the energy transition. By enabling companies to procure green electricity directly from producers, Egypt is opening new opportunities for industry and enhancing its competitiveness. We are proud to have supported EgyptERA in designing this pioneering scheme and will continue working closely as projects move towards implementation.' Dr Mohamed Mousa Omran, the chairman of EgyptERA, said: 'This pilot marks an important step towards a more competitive electricity market in Egypt. By enabling direct agreements between producers and consumers, we are creating space for the private sector to play a greater role in meeting the growing demand for clean energy in Egypt. This is essential for accelerating the deployment of renewables at scale and achieving our long-term energy goals.' The EBRD's technical support is generously funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), a key partner for the Bank in many of its ongoing policy engagements that aim to decarbonise the energy sectors of its countries of operation. This work is being delivered under the EBRD's Renewable Energy Programme, which is currently supporting 16 countries in their development of market-based mechanisms to mobilise private investments. To date, activities under this programme have delivered over 8,500 MW of renewable energy capacity being awarded in 8 countries.

Elon's blood feud with Trump will not gut SpaceX's $350 billion valuation

Matein Khalid I had analyzed SpaceX as a potential 10X winner in the Dubai media circa late 2020 when it traded at a mere $46 billion in the private market and even invited a number of close friends in an investor syndicate after sourcing shares from the Founders Fund in San Fran via the secondary market. Shakespear's Henry V praised the English longbow archers who won him the battle of Agincourt and thus the crown of France as 'we few, we happy few, we band of brothers'. I feel the same way about my SpaceX chums except our band of brothers includes a very noble sister. ADVERTISEMENT Is the 9X fairytale in SpaceX shares over, now that Elon publicly accused Trump of falsehood and even suggested that POTUS-47 was on a Jeff Epstein's Fantasy Island paedo guest list? Not at all, even though Trump has threatened to take away all Uncle Sam subsidies and contracts away from Elon's companies, now that the bromance of the century has gone sour with such a bang. Tesla (TSLA) shares naturally lost $150 billion last night on Nasdaq as TSLA plunged to 295 but a mass market EV car brand with stiff Chinese competition and declining market share cannot remotely be compared to SpaceX – Why? Unlike Tesla, SpaceX has no real technological peer and neither the Pentagon's Space Command nor NASA can or will replace SpaceX just because Trump has fallen out with Elon. America is not yet Russia, where Elon would take a jump from a window or be found with 6 bullets in his head, as happens in every Kremlin routine suicide. True, Wall Street is agog with rumours that the Navy SEAL team that whacked Osama in his safehouse is now rehearsing for even a more secret mission than Zero Dark Thirty to silence Geronimo. Jokes apart, SpaceX is too crucial to US national security, the rocket launch program and Space warfare to do anything but nurture SpaceX and help it grow bigger and richer in the years ahead for my band of brothers and noble sister. SpaceX is gaining market share and key awards and neither Trump nor even Musk can do much to derail its meteoric rise to Silicon Valley superstardom. SpaceX just won a $6 billion contract for 28 rocket launch missions critical to US national security from Space Command. Blue Origin only won a $2.4 billion contract for 7 rocket launches. SpaceX is easily the largest, most reliable, most successful, most technologically advanced space contractor for Uncle Sam and the President can do squat about this cold hard reality. SpaceX is on a roll with the world's top governments and intel agencies apart from USG/Uncle Sugar. After all, SpaceX commercial launch revenue rose by an incredible 56%, the kind of growth I see in a snappy, nappy software unicorn rather than a 20 year old Valley golden oldy that mesmerizes and owns Space, the Final Frontier… Sadly for Trump, Elon is Captain James T. Kirk and naughty even though he gets to yell 'beam me up Scotty' when the going gets tough on FX deal making with President Xi in Beijing. SpaceX is already the most profitable commercial rocket launch business the world has ever seen and its growth curve is not yet over. The FAA allowed SpaceX a five fold increase in rocket launches from its Texas base, now rebranded and incorporated as the City of Starbase. The air war between Indian and Pakistan tell the world's heads of state/spymasters that air battles will be won or lost via satellite based command and control centers, which the Chinese PLA has perfected to an art form. So I expect SpaceX to get some multi-billion dollar mega contracts from India, which is miffed at both Trump and French electronic warfare technologies. So can SpaceX command a $500 billion valuation? To borrow Obama's slogan, yes we can! Also published on Medium. Notice an issue?
