Australia Post makes big move to keep up with booming trend
Australia Post has unveiled a new wave of "next generation" retail sites designed to meet growing demand from online shopping. These revamped outlets aim to improve both customer service and operational efficiency, featuring digital self-service options, streamlined layouts and upgraded parcel collection areas.
The new stores launched today in Fitzroy in Melbourne and in Waterloo in Sydney. Speaking to Yahoo News on Tuesday morning, an Australia Post spokeswoman confirmed new sites will also be opened in St Leonards in Sydney and Chadstone in Melbourne in the "coming weeks and months".
The initiative reflects a broader transformation strategy as Australia Post responds to changing consumer habits, particularly the rise in online shopping. The redesigned stores will support faster service, reduce congestion and cater to the increasing volume of packages being processed daily.
Australia Post Executive General Manager Retail, Brand and Marketing, Josh Bannister, said the move was aimed at giving customers greater flexibility when it comes to receiving and shipping packages.
"The number one reason a customer visits the Post Office is to collect a parcel, so we're making it easier and quicker to collect and send parcels at a time that suits them," he said in a statement. "With Aussies shopping more online than ever before, we're evolving our network to keep pace with how our customers are using postal services."
It's understood there will be six to eight employees on-site to help customers with their needs, with trading hours extended to support evolving consumer habits. "Customers can collect or return online purchases around the clock, and trial sites also feature 24/7 accessible vending machines stocked with packaging, stamps and other mailing essentials," Australia Post said.
"This next-generation format is designed to be flexible and scalable, with some featuring a smaller physical footprint but a highly efficient back-of-house set-up to manage increased parcel volume."
On Monday, it was announced Australia Post had installed the country's first-ever talking post boxes in a bid to bring people closer together. The three interactive mailboxes, located in Canberra, Sydney and Traralgon, in Victoria's Gippsland region, use smart sensors to grab the attention of those walking past, and encourage them to write to a loved one the old-fashioned way — by sending a postcard.

The installations, which were set up as part of a nationwide campaign with Beyond Blue to deliver five million prepaid Connection Postcards this month, utter phrases like: "You can make a difference with a connection", "A little hello goes a long way", and "Send a note to someone special".

'Deep pockets' could help Abu Dhabi win regulatory approval for Santos bid, analysts say
By Scott Murdoch and Christine Chen SYDNEY (Reuters) -Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, preparing an $18.7 billion bid for Santos, is likely to face close scrutiny from Australian regulators worried about local gas supply, but could win them over with pledges to speed up new projects, analysts say. Santos shares closed at A$7.73 on Tuesday, well below the $5.76 (A$8.89) per share proposed takeover offer for Australia's second largest gas producer announced on Monday, which analysts said indicated investors believe the deal will face trouble with regulators. "It's not going to be smooth sailing yet," said Jamie Hannah, Deputy Head of Investments and Capital Markets at VanEck Australia, which owns shares in Santos. However, he added that the offer price "is very attractive and it's straight cash". The bid, which would be the largest ever all-cash takeover in Australia, according to FactSet data, has landed at a time when Australia's Labor government is debating how to deal with a looming gas shortage on the country's east coast from 2027. "We would expect the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) to focus on Santos's key gas infrastructure as it relates to domestic gas supply," said Jarden analyst Nik Burns. Santos' market share in eastern Australia is around 5%, with most of its gas output on that side of the country going to its Gladstone LNG export plant, analysts said. In Western Australia, where it runs two domestic gas plants and has a stake in a third one, it has a 24% market share. The infrastructure assets were not major income-generating assets, so would be very hard to spin off to satisfy any regulatory concerns, said Hannah. "This infrastructure is important for domestic gas supply in both markets. The government needs to decide if they are happy for this to sit in the hands of a foreign government," said MST Marquee analyst Saul Kavonic. ADNOC BRINGS CAPITAL TO THE TABLE On the positive side, Santos holds undeveloped resources, including the Narrabri project and Beetaloo shale gas, that could help fill the expected gas supply gap on the east coast. The bidding consortium, headed by ADNOC's investment arm XRG, could argue it would develop those projects faster than Santos could under its plans to boost capital returns to shareholders, and reduce the risk of an east coast gas shortage. "XRG might point to regulators that its larger balance sheet and funding capacity provides an opportunity to accelerate Santos' undeveloped growth assets," UBS analyst Tom Allen said in a research note. Romano Sala Tenna, portfolio manager at Katana Asset Management, which owns Santos shares, said the market was being too pessimistic about regulatory hurdles. "A large sovereign wealth fund effectively coming in with deep pockets" could pour money into Santos' undeveloped assets, he said. "So I think that is a card that will be appealing to the Australian government." XRG said on Monday that if the deal goes ahead, the consortium aims to build on Santos' legacy as a reliable energy producer "unlocking additional gas supply" and intends to "work closely with the existing management team to accelerate growth". Another factor that could work in favour of the ADNOC-led consortium, which includes the Abu Dhabi Development Holding Company (ADQ) and U.S.-based private equity firm Carlyle, is a trade deal Australia signed last year with the United Arab Emirates, analysts said. Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers, who has the final say on approving major foreign transactions, said he would listen to the advice of the Foreign Investment Review Board on the deal. Santos Chief Executive Kevin Gallagher declined to comment on the deal and regulatory concerns on the sidelines of a gas conference in Malaysia on Tuesday, other than to say he would "let the process take its course". That's the latest forecast from Citi, an investment bank, with another bank, UBS, adding its note of caution about the outlook for gold which has been one of the best investments for the past three years but is struggling to continue rising. But since reaching $3433/oz in April gold has struggled to make meaningful headway, briefly returning to that all-time high late last week when Israel launched its aerial bombardment of Iran but failing to maintain upward momentum this week. UBS, in a note circulated to Australian investors, said it remained bullish on gold but believed guidance from the miners ahead of their profit reports for the year to June 30 was 'not without risk'. Evolution Mining, Australia's second biggest goldminer, has been downgraded to sell by UBS after an 81% price rise since the start of 2025. 'We no longer have valuation support and downgrade Evolution to sell with a share price target of A$6.70,' UBS said, a price forecast which is 21.7% down on last sales at A$8.56. Northern Star, Australia's biggest gold producer, was downgraded by UBS to neutral though its share price could still rise to A$23, up 9% on last sales at A$21.08. Newmont, the big U.S.-based goldminer with a listing in Australia, is the only one of the big three to earn a buy recommendation from UBS thanks to its competitive free cash flow with securities in Australia tipped to rise by 17.4% to A$105. Citi's view is that investment demand for gold will start to fade later this year and into 2026. 'In the near term, trade deals (with Britain. China, Japa, India and Europe), and the passing of the (net stimulatory) Big Beautiful Bill should improve sentiment and stop gold moving much higher,' Citi said. "Indeed, we do not see bond vigilante momentum during 2025/26 as the BBB delta is largely funded by tariff revenues. 'Further, over the next six-to-nine months we see scope for the Federal Reserve to cut rates from a restrictive policy to neutral, bolstering growth sentiment in the U.S. and globally.' Citi said it was recommending that goldminers use the extraordinary strength in the long-dated price, which is at $4000/oz using five-year forward trades, to insure against downside below $3600/oz-to-$3700/oz. Gold, according to Citi, is likely to consolidate around $3100/oz-to-$3500/oz over the next three months. 'But our work suggests that we have already seen the highs (for gold),' Citi said. The bank said its research showed that a gold deficit should peak in the third quarter of this year and the market should fundamentally weaken after that, driven by lower investment demand. 'Our work suggests that gold returns to between $2500/oz and $2700/oz by the second half of 2026,' Citi said.
