'Mom, are all rabbis
drag queens?'
Sandi DuBowski overheard a 10-year-old boy in California ask that question after screening his latest film, a sprawling documentary about Amichai Lau-Lavie, a suis-generis, queer religious leader — the nephew of the former chief rabbi of Israel — who moonlights as the bombastic blond Rebbetzin Hadassah Gross.
As a filmmaker, DuBowski is drawn to the stories of risk takers who defy containment. Enter Lau-Lavie, whom DuBowski first learned about while working on Trembling Before G-d, his trailblazing 2001 portrait of gay and lesbian Orthodox and Hasidic Jews straddling multiple worlds.

'I went to Jerusalem to look for people to be in the film and everyone kept saying, 'You have to meet Amichai.' So I met him and asked him to be in the movie and he refused because he was too much of a diva: he wanted his own movie. He said, 'I don't do collage,'' recalls DuBowski, who grew up in Brooklyn.
But DuBowski and Lau-Lavie developed a trusting relationship in the months that followed, and by 2003 the documentarian had hit the record button. What ensued over the next two decades was Sabbath Queen, a deeply rewarding longitudinal portrait of one man's constant religious and spiritual evolution set against the backdrop of an increasingly hostile world.
'People used to tell me it was like what Richard Linklater did in
Boyhood, and I would say, yes, but it's more like Rabbihood,' says DuBowski, in Winnipeg for tonight's screening at Public Domain (633 Portage Ave.), where viewers will be treated to a Q&A and an accompanying Shabbat snack spread.
The level of access and scope of his connection to his central character was unprecedented for DuBowski, 55, whose own life experiences consistently found a mirror in Lau-Lavie, who, under tremendous professional risk, conducted an interfaith wedding ceremony for the filmmaker and his husband, Eric.
'I think for me, this is really a mid-life film. It's about holding these big questions, testing and compromising around structures and systems. Like, where do you push? There's an inside-outside strategy Amichai employs, so that's part of it. I think just watching the unfolding of a life.'

That reverse origami reveals a subject, as well as a filmmaker, constantly reorienting himself within the context of both a flexible modern world and a static, text-based landscape, assessing the strictures of religion to renegotiate the boundaries of inherited tradition.
As the film progresses, DuBowski and Lau-Lavie are revealed as deeply introspective, considerate and intellectually open characters, willing to engage soulfully with questions asked both within and without global Jewish communities: Who is Jewish? Who is godly? Who are we to even ask such questions?

'I was at a retreat with Amichai and we were told to lie down and imagine our funeral, our eulogies, our purpose in life, and I got up that night crying. 'Amichai, I wish I could become a rabbi.' At that point, the conservative Jewish movement that I grew up in didn't accept openly gay or lesbian rabbis,' DuBowski recalls.
'And Amichai comforted me and said that artists are the new rabbis, and that's when I became an artist. I have no rabbis in my family, but I really do feel like I live by that idea — artists as the new rabbis — and that's how I'm trying to do my own version of spiritual work.'

Bills QB Josh Allen and actor Hailee Steinfeld marry in Southern California
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and actor Hailee Steinfeld tied the knot on Saturday, according to multiple media reports. Pictures emerged from the power couple's wedding that took place in Southern California, where both Allen and Steinfeld live. Photos obtained by 'People' magazine show Steinfeld, in a white strapless gown, walking down the aisle as well as the couple sharing a kiss. The timing and location of the wedding were closely guarded secrets, though Bills left tackle Dion Dawkins let the cat out of the bag in March by revealing the date as May 31. He later backtracked, saying he didn't know anything. Despite the pending wedding, Allen was present for the start of the Bills voluntary series of spring practices, which opened on Tuesday. Steinfeld has since begun attending Bills home games and the couple was inseparable at the NFL Awards ceremony in February, when Allen credited Steinfeld upon accepting the league's MVP honor. Holy cow! Pato O'Ward finally milks a cow before Indy 500, hoping to break his streak of heartbreak
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Pato O'Ward learned this week that it behooves Indianapolis 500 drivers to take part in the rookie tradition of milking a cow if they ever want to drink the stuff in victory lane upon winning 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.' Problem is that O'Ward never got that opportunity — until Friday. One day after lamenting that his Indy 500 debut occurred amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indiana Dairy Association and his Arrow McLaren team came through for him. The folks at Silverstone Farms in nearby Greenfield, Indiana, loaded up a cow named Rihanna and trucked her to the track on Friday, where she was waiting for O'Ward at the crack of dawn. O'Ward, one of the most charismatic and popular drivers in the paddock, was udderly amazed. 'Woke up for some morning milking, and it was a really cool experience,' he said, flashing a big smile. 'Very warm. You know, gotta warm her up. Yeah, she was fabulous. Did you see a video at least? You'll see. First try.' Yep, first tug and there came the stream of milk. Perhaps that's a good omen as O'Ward chases his first Indy 500 win. He has finished second twice in the most important race of the season, and has talked candidly about how Indianapolis Motor Speedway has repeatedly broken his heart. Maybe the fact that he hadn't milked the cow was the karma keeping him from victory lane. The high-steaks effort to get a cow to the speedway before Sunday's race came after O'Ward sat for a press conference Thursday with Robert Shwartzman, who earned the pole as an Indy 500 rookie. Shwarzman dutifully took part in the traditional milking earlier in the week, and as he explained: 'The woman, she came to me and said, 'The people who didn't milk the cow, they never won the Indy 500,' and they were like (did not finish). It's bad luck.' Shwartzman pointed out that Alexander Rossi milked the cow when he won as a rookie in 2016. 'You have to milk the cow,' Shwartzman said, describing his personal experience with a 'very calm, cute' cow named Indy. Movie Review: ‘Lilo & Stitch,' a sweet but unnecessary live-action remake
The six-legged alien Stitch from 'Lilo & Stitch' doesn't choose to be bad. He's just genetically programed that way. Kind of like the way Disney is apparently programmed these days to strip mine its old animated stories to make poor live-action remakes. So here comes the sweet but utterly unnecessary 'Lilo & Stitch' of 2025, which carefully apes almost every detail of the 2002 original but then goes all Hollywood at the end with over-the-top explosions, the addition of a CIA team and Tom Cruise-level heroics, maybe to try to compete with the latest 'Mission: Impossible' opening at the same time. 'What deranged maniac would create something like this?' asks the head of the Galactic Federation about Stitch but they could easily refer to whoever at Disney green-lit this lazy cash grab that assumes we won't remember the original, wastes the comic zip of Zach Galifianakis and Billy Magnussen and product-places Capri Sun. Screenwriters Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Mike Van Waes are credited with the new story but it's built on the work of the original's Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, right down to swiping whole chunks of dialogue, the same structure and same characters. Disney's live-action remakes/re-imaginings have been a staple for more than a decade, with titles raided again including 'The Little Mermaid,' 'Aladdin,' 'The Jungle Book,' 'Mulan,' 'Dumbo,' 'Pinocchio' and 'Snow White.' Here's hoping 'Lilo & Stitch' convinces the studio to generate some new stories. Our heroine here is Lilo, a 6-year-old lonely Native Hawaiian girl who is shunned and bullied by her peers. She shoves back, pouts and adores Elvis. She is played winsomely by Maia Kealoha. 'Am I bad?' Lilo asks her sister. The reply: 'You're not bad. You just do bad things sometimes.' Sydney Elizabeth Agudong artfully plays her older sister and mother figure, trying to keep the siblings afloat after the death of their parents. The filmmakers have beefed up the older sister's story with her yearning to be a marine biologist. Agudong proves a soulful sister, playing a ukulele, singing and surfing. Stitch — voiced again by Sanders — is the product of an illegal genetic experimentation in a far-off galaxy who can think faster than a supercomputer. He is built to destroy, like a reverse E.T. (Love will tame him, of course.) Stitch is faithfully realized, right down to his fur and koala bear nose. Turning the 2002 animated movie into live-action has meant the two aliens tasked with tracking down the escapee Stitch use cloning technology to become humans — enter Galifianakis and Magnussen. The technology has also denuded their comedic chops, leaving them just two bumbling doofuses. Tia Carrere, who voiced the older sister in the first film, takes over as social services case worker from Ving Rhames, only this time friendlier and helpful. Courtney B. Vance plays a new character — a CIA officer who investigates aliens and, in this case, chooses a hairball alien over his training, his nation and the truth. Director Dean Fleischer Camp, the filmmaker behind the animated feature film 'Marcel the Shell with Shoes On,' proves adept at mixing humans and digital creations and revels in the anarchic excesses of Stitch. But the violence — lasers, forks in blenders, a house burned down — is unnecessary. 'Lilo & Stitch' is really a story about sisters and how families can be dysfunctional but still work as long as there's love. That message thankfully hasn't been diluted in the remake despite being overloaded with temporal portals, a Jet Ski chase and an overwrought conclusion. Disney should have left the original alone. 'Lilo & Stitch,' a Walt Disney Studios release that hits theaters Friday, is rated PG for 'action, peril and thematic elements.' Running time: 148 minutes. One and a half stars out of four.
