Bangladesh Charges Ex-PM Hasina With Crimes Against Humanity
Bangladeshi prosecutors officially charged former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and two senior officials with crimes against humanity for their alleged roles in violent crackdowns during the 2024 student-led uprising.
An investigation report found that Hasina 'directly ordered' state security forces, her political party and affiliated groups to conduct operations resulting in mass casualties. 'These killings were planned,' Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam said in a televised hearing on Sunday, citing video evidence and encrypted communications between different agencies.

Weinstein's 2nd Sex Crimes Trial in New York Shifts to Closing Arguments
Closing arguments in the second New York sex crimes trial of Harvey Weinstein were set to begin on Tuesday, six weeks after prosecutors began laying out their case against him. Mr. Weinstein, the disgraced former Hollywood producer, is charged with attacking three women in Manhattan between 2006 and 2013. He was previously convicted of rape and a criminal sexual act about five years ago and had begun serving a 23-year state prison sentence when the conviction was overturned on appeal last spring. Alvin L. Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, and other prosecutors in his office opted to charge Mr. Weinstein again almost immediately, eventually bringing two counts of first-degree criminal sexual act and one count of third-degree rape against him. Over the past month and a half, prosecutors have sought to establish that Mr. Weinstein used his power in Hollywood to sexually assault and 'exert enormous control' over the three women, all of whom were seeking work in the film and television industry. He offered the women scripts and promises of fame, and he 'used those dream opportunities as weapons,' Shannon Lucey, an assistant district attorney, said during her opening statement. In all, prosecutors called 24 witnesses during the retrial, including Mr. Weinstein's former assistants; friends and relatives of his accusers; and workers at the hotels where he is accused of attacking the women. Rays shortstop Wander Franco's child sexual abuse trial begins with emphatic plea: 'Let justice be done'
Wander Franco went on trial on Monday amid allegations he had been in a relationship with a minor and paid her mother thousands of dollars for her consent. The 2023 MLB All-Star last played that August. Since then, he has been charged with sexually abusing a minor, sexual and commercial exploitation against a minor, and human trafficking. Prosecutors say the minor's mother went from being a bank employee to allegedly leading an ostentatious life and acquiring assets using the funds she received from Franco. During raids on the house of the minor's mother, prosecutors say they found $68,500 and $35,000 that they allege was delivered by Franco. Franco appeared in court Monday and gave an emphatic plea. "Let justice be done," he said, via ESPN. According to ESPN, Dominican prosecutors say Franco called the minor "my girl" in a WhatsApp message, admitting that the relationship was a "risk," but he "loved it." "My girl," Franco allegedly wrote in Spanish. "If my team realizes this, it could cause problems for me. It is a rule for all teams that we cannot talk to minors, and yet I took the risk and I loved it." Prosecutors say Franco's alleged relationship with the girl, who was 14 at the time, lasted four months, and he allegedly paid her to not speak about it. The girl's mother also faces charges for money laundering based on gifts allegedly sent to her by Franco. The shortstop allegedly gave the girl the equivalent of $46,000 in July and August and allegedly paid the mother about $1,700 per month, along with a new car, according to documents that were released in January last year, via ESPN. Franco and the girl allegedly met on Dec. 9, 2022 after he "took her from her home," had sex twice in a two-day span and began their relationship. Franco last played a Major League game on Aug. 12, 2023, and with the charges, it is now increasingly likely he will never play again. Franco was an All-Star for the first time that season, as he slashed .281/.344/.475 with 17 homers and 58 RBI over 112 games. He signed an 11-year, $182 million contract extension in November 2021, but a team option was able to make the deal worth $233 million. Franco is no longer being paid, but was receiving payments while on administrative leave. The payments ended when he was then placed on the restricted list. Bangladesh Narrows Fiscal Deficit, Cuts Spending in Budget
Bangladesh's interim government targeted a smaller fiscal deficit and lowered spending in its maiden budget, as the South Asian nation aims to meet conditions for future International Monetary Fund loans, critical for the crisis-hit economy. The fiscal deficit for the year beginning July 1 is estimated at 3.6% of gross domestic product from 4.6% in the current year, Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed said in a televised budget speech on Monday. That's the lowest since the 2010-11 fiscal year when it stood at 3.8%.
