The A40 in Monmouthshire has been closed for over nine hours following a serious collision which has left a man in hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police were called to reports of an accident involving a motorcycle on the A40 between Mitchell Troy and Monmouth at around 11.25am on Friday, May 9.
Officers from Gwent Police attended the scene, along with personnel from the Welsh Ambulance Service and the Wales Air Ambulance. The motorcyclist, a man in his fifties, was taken to hospital with injuries described as "potentially life threatening", police confirmed.
The road has remained closed in both directions for over nine hours.
Traffic monitoring system Inrix is reporting that accident investigation work is currently underway. Follow our live coverage of the incident here.

Gwent Police were first called to reports of a collision on the A40 near Monmouth at 11.25am on Friday, May 9.
The collision, which involved a motorcyclist, is reported to have occurred on the eastbound carriageway. The A40 eastbound has been closed from the Gibraltar Tunnels (Monmouth) to Mitchell Troy.

The westbound portion of the A40 has also been closed between the Raglan Interchange and the Gibraltar Tunnels since this morning.
A Wales Air Ambulance crew from Dafen attended the scene. A man was taken to hospital with "potentially life-threatening injuries", police said.
Heavy delays were reported around Monmouth at rush hour. Traffic Wales South said motorists were facing delays of up to 45 minutes, while Inrix said that routes around Monmouthshire were "heavily congested" as motorists tried to avoid the A40.

What have police said about the collision?
A spokesperson for Gwent Police said on Friday afternoon: "We received a report of a road traffic collision, involving a motorcycle, on the A40 at around 11.25am on Friday 9 May.
"Officers attended, along with personnel from the Welsh Ambulance Service and Welsh Air Ambulance.

What have the Wales Air Ambulance said?
A spokesperson for the Wales Air Ambulance said: "I can confirm that Wales Air Ambulance attended an emergency on the A40 in Monmouthshire today (09/05/25). Our Dafen-based crew attended by air and arrived on scene at 12:01. Our involvement concluded at 13:30."

Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft sparked a new paddock rumour at the Canadian Grand Prix by talking about Fernando Alonso's visits to other teams during a live broadcast Fernando Alonso has been spotted entering the hospitality unit of a rival Formula 1 team on several occasions in Montreal this weekend. That was reported by David Croft who exposed the Spaniard's visits during a live broadcast at the Canadian Grand Prix. Alonso is in his third season as an Aston Martin driver. And he has a contract until at least the end of the 2026 season, having last year signed an extension to commit to driving in F1 until he is at least 45 years old. Alonso's visits to the Alpine motorhome will only serve to fuel speculation that he might be an option for them going forward. Briatore signed Alonso to Renault in the first place, having controversially dropped Jenson Button to make room for him two decades ago. They have maintained a relationship ever since, Briatore continuing to manage the Spaniard's career. But if race seat options have indeed been the topic of discussion during Alonso's visits to the Alpine hospitality unit, then it may not necessarily just be about the veteran double F1 champion.
