Music Venue Trust teams up with ‘people's social media platform' WeAre8

Independent22-03-2025

The Music Venue Trust has teamed up with social media platform WeAre8, which is sponsoring five gigs at independent music venues around the UK between now and the end of May 2025.
The partnership comes amid dire warnings about the future of grassroots venues in the UK. In January, a damning report found that almost a quarter of MVT member venues (810) face a threat of permanent closure.
Meanwhile, one grassroots venue closed its doors every two weeks in 2024, MVT figures found, while a further 80 had stopped hosting live music events and over 200 had been forced to seek emergency help.
The partnership between the MVT and WeAre8 aims to promote both local artists and the venues they're performing at, in the wake of a separate report that found 84 per cent of UK independent artists cannot afford to tour this year.
WeAre8 is supporting the following venues: Aatma in Manchester, Little Buildings in Newcastle, The Asylum in Newcastle and The Fox & Newt in Leeds.
The Music Venue Trust has also been listed in WeAre8's 'wallet', which means that users can choose to send funds generated from adverts to the organisation.
The platform is structured so that money from advertisers is shared with people, publishers, non-profits and planet projects.
Laura Chase, UK managing director of WeAre8, said: 'WeAre8 has created a safe and positive place for us all to connect, share and create. We want to support the creative industries, the grassroots venues and the smaller bands and artists - who are being lost to algorithms on other social platforms - and not being recognised or rewarded for their talent and content.
'Our mission is to help elevate and support the amazing artists we have in the UK and help them find a viable economic path forward. Essential to this is supporting independent music venues, which the Music Venue Trust has ploughed passion and resources into protecting and promoting over the last ten plus years. By including Music Venue Trust in our wallet, we're also hoping music lovers will support the charity by helping to fund its fantastic work.'
Denzil Thomas, partnership manager of Music Venues Trust, said: 'There are so many amazing venues up and down the UK that have played a crucial role in the development of British music over the last 40 years; nurturing local talent and providing a platform for artists to build their careers and develop their music and their performance skills. Yet they're battling each week to stay alive. We believe our partnership with WeAre8 can help keep these special places alive.'

Vid shows Disneyland Paris ‘wedding rehearsal' ahead of ‘marriage' of ‘confused' girl, 9, to Brit man before his arrest

Around 100 children aged five to 15, along with their families, were reportedly recruited as 'guests' DISNEY CREEP Vid shows Disneyland Paris 'wedding rehearsal' ahead of 'marriage' of 'confused' girl, 9, to Brit man before his arrest CREEPY footage has emerged of an alleged mock "wedding" between a British man and a nine-year-old girl at Disneyland Paris. A video released by French network BFM TV shows around 100 guests seated during the £111,000 ceremony in front of the iconic Sleeping Beauty castle. In the video filmed on Saturday at dawn, a flower-covered stage, lavish décor, a grand cake and musicians can be seen. But what they witnessed next would leave them horrified - appearing on stage as the 'bride' was a nine-year-old girl. The child, reportedly of Ukrainian nationality, was carried out as she could not walk in the extravagant bridal dress. Advertisement Disney staff immediately called police upon spotting a "scared and confused" child in a big dress with four-inch heels taped to her feet, reports French newspaper Le Parisien. Disneyland Paris was reportedly deceived about the nature of the event, as reported by The Sun earlier today. The park said it had rented out the grounds of the Sleeping Beauty Castle under the impression that a genuine wedding rehearsal would take place - not an event involving a minor. The event cost the organisers $130,000 (£111,000), BFM reported. Advertisement The organiser is said to have assumed the "identity of a Latvian national", using "false documents to secure the conclusion of the contract for privatising the park", BFM TV reports. According to Le Parisien, the man, 22, had presented himself "as a future Irish groom living in Germany". French cops confirm husband killed wife then took own life in horror murder-suicide at holiday home Cops are said to have immediately arrested the "groom", who later insisted that the purpose of the ceremony was to create a video for social media. But Disney staff said recording is strictly forbidden, adding that "the man may have devised this subterfuge to obtain images of the park". Advertisement The girl's 41-year-old mother, reportedly Ukrainian, was also arrested. She said she wanted her daughter to feel like a Disney "princess" for the day, according to DW News. 200 adult guests and 100 children aged five to 15 were said to have been recruited online through ads describing a "chic and elegant" "rehearsal" wedding, Le Parisien reported. They were allegedly paid €200 each and told to "enter the room, sit down, stand up, applaud and participate naturally and elegantly in this event filmed in a festive and classy atmosphere". Advertisement A statement issued by the prosecutor's office in the local town of Meaux read: "Four people were arrested and questioned: the groom, who was believed to be the organiser of the event and is presumed to be British and aged 22; the mother of the child, a 41-year-old Ukrainian woman; and two Latvian nationals aged 55 and 24." A 55-year-old man claimed he was hired to play the role of the "bride's" dad for 12,000 euros (£10,266) - and only discovered her age at the event, local news reports. The prosecutor's statement added that "police custody of the British suspect and a Latvian national was also extended on charges of fraud and money laundering". A criminal investigation has been opened, according to the prosecutor's office. Advertisement The man posing as the "groom" claimed that he was the director of a production company and that they were shooting a video, a police source told Le Parisien. A witness, who said they had been a guest at the event, told the newspaper: "We all thought we were going to attend a wedding... "Everyone was stunned, no one expected it. Disneyland did things very well. "They cancelled everything as soon as they realized the bride was a child. We were shocked to see that." Advertisement Witness Yeleen, who attended the ceremony as a guest with her daughter, said: "I saw a little girl dressed in white. "I saw her hair prepared with curls and a lady picking her up in her arms. "At that moment, I was shocked. I realised when I saw the child. It was atrocious." The prosecutor's office said: "So it wasn't a wedding, but a staged wedding filmed with around a hundred extras. Advertisement "They privatised Disneyland Paris, pretending it was a real wedding." They are set to appear before a judge at Meaux judicial court on Monday as part of a formal judicial investigation. 7 The iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle Credit: AFP 7 Around 12 million tourists are said to visit Disneyland Paris each year Credit: Alamy

British man arrested for fake wedding to nine-year-old at Disneyland

A British man has been arrested at Disneyland Paris after allegedly trying to stage a fake wedding to a nine-year-old girl. The theme park had been privately hired for the ceremony early on Saturday morning before it was open to the public, at a reported cost of €130,000 (£111,140). However, police were called after staff realised that the bride, a Ukrainian national who was wearing a wedding dress and reportedly tottering on high heels, appeared to be a young child. They believed that it could have been an illegal child marriage. The suspected instigator, believed to be British, played the role of the groom after 'being professionally made up to look completely different from himself', said Jean-Baptiste Bladier, a public prosecutor in Meaux. Police were still working to formally identify the suspect, Mr Bladier added. Alexandre Verney, the assistant prosecutor for the Seine-et-Marne department, said: 'The event turned out to be a staged event, with the guests themselves extras [invited to be part of the stunt]. 'It wasn't a wedding, but a staged wedding filmed with around a hundred extras. They hired Disneyland Paris, pretending it was a real wedding.' It was to be ''filmed privately' and broadcast on social media', added Mr Bladier. According to Le Parisien, which first reported the incident, a man hired the Disneyland Paris complex, which is the most visited theme park in Europe, several weeks earlier. 'Day worthy of a princess' The girl's mother reportedly told investigators that she wanted to organise a 'day worthy of a princess' for her daughter. Staff were astonished when the nine-year-old appeared on Saturday morning, barely able to stand in stilettos, and they alerted the authorities, the French newspaper reported. The man who organised the event had reportedly submitted false documents concerning his identity, and Disneyland filed a complaint. A witness told Le Parisien: 'We were not told at any time that it was about a film shoot. We all thought we were going to be part of a wedding. 'Everyone was stunned. No one expected this. Disneyland does things very well. They immediately cancelled when they understood that the bride was a kid. We were sickened by that.' The investigations, including a medical examination of the nine-year-old 'bride', found that 'she had not been subjected to any violence or coercive acts', the prosecutor's office said. Four people were arrested on Saturday: the suspected British organiser and fake groom, a 24-year-old Latvian woman who helped organise the event and played the role of the bride's fake sister, the child's 41-year-old mother and a 55-year-old Latvian man who was recruited to play a role in the ceremony. On Sunday evening, only the first two suspects were still in custody, the other two having been released without charge. 'Organiser misrepresented himself' According to the Meaux prosecutor's office, Disneyland Paris was deceived as 'the organiser misrepresented himself as a Latvian national and used false documents to obtain the contract for the privatisation of the park'. It added: 'With all charges relating to harm to the minor having been dismissed, the prosecutor's office said it would request charging the two individuals with 'fraud and breach of trust to the detriment of Disneyland Paris, which has also filed a complaint to this effect'.' The office said it would request that they be placed under judicial supervision. The alleged organiser and the bride's 'sister' are due to appear before an investigating judge on Monday. The Meaux public prosecutor's office said it would request that they be placed under judicial supervision. It said that the nine-year-old and her mother 'do not usually stay in France and had arrived in the country two days earlier'. The mother was released without charge along with the 55-year-old Latvian who had alerted staff to the subterfuge. Mr Bladier said: 'He explained that he had been hired to play the role of the bride's father for €12,000 (£10,000) and had discovered at the last minute that she was nine years old.' In a statement, Disneyland Paris said while it had received payment for the event, it was 'immediately cancelled' by its teams 'after significant irregularities were identified'.

Inspired by Lena's own experiences with her husband Luis Felber, Too Much – which features cameos from Grazia favourite Andrew Scott, Kit Harington, Jessica Alba, Rita Ora and Jennifer Saunders – depict dating and falling in love in its raw, messy form. Ahead of the show's debut, we take a look at the lead star… Megan Stalter in Too Much ©Ana Blumenkron/Netflix Megan Stalter is an American comedian and actress, hailing from Ohio.
